Earlier this month we had a guest post from longtime reader Doug Brei, who told us how he designed the inaugural logo for the ECHL’s South Carolina Sharks back in 1992, but then that logo never got used because the team changed its name to Stingrays before the start of its first season.
Doug’s logo finally made its very belated on-ice debut on Saturday, as the Stingrays held a “What If?” promotion, playing one game as the Sharks, complete with Doug’s original logo on their jerseys, against the Wichita Thunder.
Here are some additional photos:
Here are some fun details:
- The team posted a uni unveiling video on the day before the game:
Looks like Wichita’s gonna need a bigger boat 🦈
Our SC Sharks jersey auction goes live Saturday, Jan 27th, presented by IBEW Local 776! Proceeds benefit @SCaquarium! 🌊

- They even used Doug’s Sharks logo on the TV broadcast’s scorebug, as you can see in this screen shot and highlight video:
- The jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going to the South Carolina Aquarium — a cool beneficiary!
- Doug wasn’t able to make it down to Charleston for the game himself, but his daughter Maddie, who’s a freshman at the College of Charleston, was in attendance — and wore Doug’s 30-year-old Sharks sweatshirt:
As it happens, I met Doug and Maddie in 2018, when they came to Syracuse to watch me throw out the first pitch at the Syracuse Chiefs’ Brannock Device Night. Here a photo of them posing with me and SportsLogos.net’s Chris Creamer, who was also on hand, with Maddie wearing sensational stirrups:

What a great story! Doug says he’s proud to see his logo finally make it onto the ice — justifiably so, I’d say! Not only that, but the Stingrays-as-Sharks won the game, so Doug’s logo has a 1.000 winning percentage. Go Sharks!
That logo is FANTASTIC, and the overall uniforms are equally great…
Great story, great design!
Fins Up!
I’d wear that!
Congrats on the debut and on the victory.
This is awesome. Nice for Doug to finally get to see his design on the ice. Very cool this daughter was able to be there in person, and seemingly that there is some multi-generational uni appreciation happening.
Thanks, Greg! She’s actually made a few UniWatch contributions herself dating back to when she was 11 years old!
SO cool!
Congratulations, Doug. The shark logo is awesome. How great that you got to see it on the ice.
Awesome stuff, Doug! Congrats.
This is great. The Stingrays games are always a good time and the SC Aquarium does fantastic work for injured marine life, especially sea turtles. Fantastic!
Thanks all! Quite a thrill, especially after all these years!
Great logo and design, Doug! And no advertising patches!
Thats bucket list stuff for a lot of us. Congrats!
That’s awesome it finally got on the ice! You must have been thrilled Doug! Congratulations.
Awesome story and an awesome design, Doug! That would be a dream come true for me!
Edit: “they came to Syracuse to watch me throw at the first pitch”
– Did you heckle and jeer the first pitch, as well? ; )
Fixed.
I love this! Congrats again, Doug!
Congrats, Doug!
