Orange You Glad: Bucs Set Date for Long-Awaited Creamsicle Throwback Game

[This post is part of Uni Watch Positivity Week. You can learn more about that here, and you can see all the UWPW posts here. — PL]

We’ve known for a long time that the Bucs would be reviving their creamsicle throwbacks this season, and now we finally know the exact date that the throwbacks will be worn, because the team has just announced that Bucco Bruce will make his long-awaited return to the gridiron on Oct. 15, when the Bucs host the Lions at 1pm Eastern:

This will be the creamsicle throwbacks’ first appearance since 2012. The Bucs were unable to wear them from 2013 through 2021 due to the league’s one-shell rule. Although the rule was lifted last year, supply-chain issues prevented the Bucs from reviving the throwbacks until this year.

The creamsicles were originally worn from the team’s 1976 inception until 1997, when the Bucs adopted their current red/pewter color scheme.

If you want to learn more about the creamsicle uniforms, I recently did a deep dive on them, full of info you might not know about, over on my Substack.

And it looks like it will be a winning uniform since they’re playing the Lions!

Hey, the Lions aren’t the pushovers they once were!

The only way to make the headline better would be to have it read: “Orange You Clad!”

Ah, that is good news! Along with the Seahawks blue/green/silver this is one of my favorite uniforms. Now off to the fridge to get a creamsicle (or spilt as we call them here).

As a Lions fan, I’m looking forward to this. It’s a great throwback to the NFC Central days where Tampa Bay was in what is today’s NFC North. I really hope the Lions wear white over blue for this one. The greys are just awful.

Hoping the Lions stay the course and go silver, white, blue or silver, white silver.

Such a great and unique look. I really wish they used the some version of the modern skull flag logo, but rendered on this uniform color scheme. Orange and white with red trim feels like something from Tampa. It is bright and vibrant. The drab pewter and with red feels cold and industrial.

Permanently, I’d add. I know they’re in line for wholesale changes, and I know it won’t be a throwback to the Barry Sanders era, it’ll be some absurd Nike monstrosity, but I’m holding out a shred of hope.

I like your positivity week. This is a cool writing project.

Currently, you have a sentence worded this way: “Although the rule was lifted last year, supply-chain issues prevented the Bucs from reviving the throwbacks until this year.”

To have an even more positive connotation, I would suggest this edit that omits “prevented.” “Although the rule was lifted, the supply chain experienced issues, thus the Buc are reviving their throwbacks this year.”

I look forward to reading more this project.

My first year of following the NFL was 1976, when the Buccos and Hawks were whelped. This is like homecoming to me!

I’ll make the negative comment since Paul isn’t this week. This should be their permanent/main uniform!

Have you looked at the frankenjersey available in the Bucs’ pro shop? Oh my. It’s an Alstott throwback with a mix of creamsicle and the 1997 look. There are no words to describe it.
