Uni Watch Power Rankings for Yellow (don’t call them gold) Uniforms

Posted in:

Good morning! I’m happy to report that the Uni Watch Power Rankings are back, this time with a look at yellow uniforms (which teams usually like to refer to as gold, but come on — they’re yellow).

You can read the first part of the article here. In order to read the entire thing, you’ll need to become a paying subscriber to my Substack (which will also give you access to my full Substack/Bulletin archives). My thanks, as always, for your consideration!

I’m sure some of you are thinking, “Do the Power Rankings for purple uniforms!” Don’t worry, it’ll happen — probably next year.

Can of the Day

There are so many old vintage lard cans floating around out there, I could probably do a daily feature just on that. Some are really great, others are meh, but I really like this one because of the rose and the name “American Beauty” — not things you’d normally associate with lard! Great striped design, too, and the yellow-centric color scheme fits with today’s Substack article. And look at the “T” in “Beauty” — a fun and unexpected touch!

Take your time on the purple review. But if K-State and East Carolina are anywhere above the bottom for use of lavender/bright purple/two-tone purple, we’ll know if Purp Walk Day again.

Those yellow Vancouver Canucks trainer’s shirts are amazing.

I’d like to see yellow (and maybe orange and neon green) returned to the realm of light-colored uniforms, while anything darker than 50% grey is considered the dark uniform. Hockey and basketball looked much more engaging with the colorful tilts between bright and dark teams. For instance, the Predators really ought to have yellow sweaters and dark blue ones. No need for a white one.

I gotta throw down for the Arsenal bruised banana 1991/93 away jersey

Thing of beauty only made better by the passage of time

American Beauty is ofcourse also the species of that rose. Unintentionally very funny, the combination of a nice smelling rose and lard. Beautiful can.

And that reminds me of an old Abbott and Costello radio bit…

Costello (to a woman) “Your face reminds me of a rose”
Woman “Oh? An American Beauty Rose?
    Costello “No. A rhinocer-rose”

Those Canucks unis bring back memories. One year I received a black winter coat, similar to a varsity jacket (we didn’t get them for academics or other non-athletic pursuits, mind) but without the leather sleeves or colored cuffs – just. plain. black. But what it did have was diagonal quilting on the shell; I found that Canucks’ “flying skate” crest just like Harry Neale is wearing, bought it, and had it sewn on the coat. Instant conversation piece.

Regarding the CotD – I can’t be the only one that imagined Mena Suvari covered in rose petals, and laying in a tray of pure lard….

Show the Canucks team photo to 100 people and 75 will think they’re looking at a men’s choir.

Got the New York/Cincinnati game on, and I’m impressed by how nice the Reds’ CC uniforms look. It would be nice to see more monochromatic baseball, especially on teams who play at night or indoors.

That’s one of the greatest Can of the Day yet.
Do you own all of these cans? If so, how large is your collection?
Is there a page that has all the cans?
    Thanks.
