EXCLUSIVE: Texas Rangers Adding All-Star Game Cap Patches for 2024

The Rangers, in addition to being the defending World Series champs, are also the hosts of this year’s MLB All-Star Game. They just tweeted a photo of pitcher Nathan Eovaldi that, as you can see above, shows him wearing a cap adorned with an All-Star Game logo patch.

The Rangers did not wear this cap patch during their recent Photo Day shoot, nor has any such patch-adorned cap appeared at retail (at least to my knowledge). So I checked with my MLB Style Guide source, who confirmed that, according to the Guide, the Rangers will indeed be wearing this patch on all of their game caps this season.

The Guide does not show the Rangers wearing an All-Star Game sleeve patch, presumably because they already have the Texas flag patch on one sleeve and are seeking an advertiser for the other sleeve.

Last year’s All-Star hosts, the Mariners, wore a sleeve patch but not a cap patch:

(My thanks to Chris Gutierrez for bringing the Eovaldi photo to my attention.)

While Manfred has had a lot of missteps in in tenture as commissioner, I’ll give him credit for not standardizing All Star and World Series logos like other leagues have.

This year’s ASG logo is amazing.

Have you seen the recent World Series logos? They are nothing to be given credit for.

I don’t think credit has been earned for the World Series logos since 2019, especially since even those have been sold out to corporate advertisers. Anything after the 2011 logo feels simple and a bit stale to me.

I’ll agree, it’s very boring that the SB logo doesn’t change based on the host anymore. I would have loved a Las Vegas themed logo for the Super Bowl.

Does this mean “in the coming weeks”? One would think so…

The last professional sport with an All-Star Game logo that’s somewhat unique and fun.

Makes sense since it’s also the only All Star game thats even remotely fun.

The last all star game to ostensibly play their regular game in the All Star Game. You might say the NBA does that, but a 211-186 game isn’t “regular”.

Reasons to not go by the state name when there are multiple teams in the same state.
Based on this logo the ASG could be in Houston or DFW.

They will call themselves the Arlington or Ft. Worth Rangers before they would ever identify themselves with Dallas.

The game is in Texas. There is no error here.
And the state name makes sense with the nickname. No need to change it, even with another team in the state.
Just like the Florida Panthers. Sure, there’s a hockey team in Tampa as well, but the name makes sense with the mascot.

Is it Houston? Arlington? San Antonio? Austin? The logo isn’t “wrong” it just isn’t specific enough given there are two major league teams in Texas which might be hosting it. This could be the logo for an ASG in Houston at it would also be correct.
I get why both the Florida Panthers and Texas Rangers are named so, but as someone who is into geography and demographics, these names don’t actually tell me where the teams play when said states are host to multiple large metro-areas suitable for a big league team. Are the hypothetical Pennsylvania Keystones in Philly or Pittsburgh? If Pennsylvania is hosting an ASG, do I have any clue where it is at?

I’m sure there’s a search engine that will help you find the location.

How specific do you need? Do you want the stadium name, the street and the zip code as well?

And knowing that there is a team named Texas and a team named Houston in MLB, it’s a REALLY safe bet that the game is hosted by the team named Texas. Makes a heck of a lot more sense than two teams called New York playing football in New Jersey.

I feel like cap patches will be the accepted way to observe events, anniversaries and memorialize the dead in the near future. Or not.

I’ve never understood keeping the sleeve open for an ad patch. Could Texas not wear the ASG patch on the sleeve, and then switch over when an ad partner deal is brokered? Is this a rule, that teams are not allowed to switch sleeve patches during the year? Same when the Cubs dropped the NL logo last year and they still don’t have an ad yet.
