Niners’ Super Bowl Patch Positioning Extends Odd Super Bowl Streak

The video embedded above gives us our first look at how the Super Bowl LVIII patch will look on the 49ers’ jerseys when they face off against Kansas City on Feb. 11.

As we’ve already seen, KC will be wearing the Supe patch on the right side of their jersey (or the viewer’s left), but the 49ers will have it on the left side (or the viewer’s right). That’s the same way both teams handled the patch positioning four years ago in Super Bowl LIV:

This will be the fifth consecutive year that the two Super Bowl teams have worn the Supe patch on opposite sides of the jersey, mostly but not entirely due to KC’s Lamar Hunt perma-memorial patch. Here’s a recap of the previous four games (all left/right designations refer to the player’s perspective, not the viewer’s perspective):

The last time both Super Bowl teams wore the Supe patch on the same side was in Super Bowl LIII (Pats and Rams, both on the left):

Have we ever had a situation in which both teams wore the Supe patch on the other side? I don’t have time to research that now, but maybe someone else can investigate that!

After quickly scrolling through Gridiron Uniform Database, I can say that unfortunately there hasn’t been a Super Bowl will both teams wearing the patch on the other side.

It would’ve likely occurred in Super Bowl XXIX, with the 75th anniversary patch, but teams weren’t wearing SB patches regularly by then.

    Thanks :)

The only teams that would wear a SB patch on the other side (as of now) would be the Chiefs, the Rams, the Steelers and the Jaguars. If course, another team could be wearing a temporary memorial or anniversary patch too, which would force it on the other side, but that’s only happened twice in SB history.

I think you have the jersey side/viewer’s side a little mixed up… the SF has it on the left/viewer’s right, and KC has it on the right/viewer’s left, correct? To be clear, I am NOT spinning around in my desk chair with my hands out while mutter trying to try to keep it straight… :P

This also happened in Super Bowls XL, XLIII, and XV with the Steelers wearing the Super Bowl patch on their right (viewer’s left) and their opponent wearing the patch on their left (viewer’s right).

The picture from last year gives a really clear shot of the awkward way Mahomes wears his helmet.

    Edits:
“mostly but not entirely due to KC’s Lamar Hunt perma-memorial patch.

“Has we even had a situation in which both teams wore”

The text that Mr. Inconsistent quotes is fine, but there’s a period instead of a comma in front of it:

“This will be the fifth consecutive year that the two Super Bowl teams have worn the Supe patch on opposite sides of the jersey. mostly but not entirely due to KC’s Lamar Hunt perma-memorial patch.” (Emphasis added.)
