Uni Watch Power Rankings for Brown Uniforms

The recent death of Jim Brown — who played for the Browns, who wear brown — got me thinking about brown uniforms, so I sat down and made a little list of brown-clad teams. I knew brown wasn’t a particularly popular uniform color, but I was really surprised by how infrequently it’s been used. That led me to create a full-blown rundown/rankings article on the few, the proud, the brown.

You can read the beginning of the article here. In order to read the entire thing, you’ll need to become a paying subscriber to my Substack (which will also give you access to my full Substack/Bulletin archives). My thanks, as always, for your consideration!

Have a fair amount of hockey jerseys but few brown ones.

Have a replica Quebec Caribous lacrosse jersey, University of Manitoba Bisons hockey jersey, and a retro Bruins hockey sweater.

The official colors of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester NY are orange and brown, but about 25-30 years ago the sports teams quietly started substituting black for brown in their uniforms, with the mens’ hockey team being the last team to sport any brown on their uniforms. In either 2002 or 2003, they were orange and black like all the other teams. I have game-worns of the last 2 RIT hockey sweaters that featured any brown. One is a white sweater, so brown is merely a trim color. The other is orange, and on that one, brown is the predominant color for all the numbers and lettering (there is white trim around all the letters and numbers). Orange was usually the base color for their “dark” sweaters, but I have seen some pictures (that pre-date my time as a student there) of the hockey team sporting sweaters where brown was the base color.

When it comes to attractive brown-dominant NASCAR paint schemes, the options are very limited…most of the ones that bore advertising for a package-handling operation were pretty ugly.
But there’s a one(or 2)-off that floats to the top:
I’d love to consider Alan Kulwicki’s championship #7 ride, but I’d call that more orange and white than brown.

Hi, great list, Mr. Lukas. I believe the St. Bonaventure Bonnies just outside Olean, NY also wear brown as a primary color.
