New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Meanwhile: Reader AJ Brandt recently informed me that he’d been reading NHL linesman Ray “Scampy” Scapinello‘s memoir, Between the Lines (written with Rob Simpson; see link at right), and that it featured several uni-related anecdotes. I asked if he’d be willing to transcribe the passages in question, which he’s now generously done. So today’s blog entry offers a peek into the uniform travails of an NHL official.
Without further ado:
Scampy probably signed and gave away about six or seven of his sweaters a season, mostly as charitable contributions but sometimes to players. His first two jerseys from the league were free, but each subsequent replacement cost him about thirty or forty bucks apiece.
“In terms of players, Bob Probert asked me for my jersey one time. Domi has one, and Ray Bourque as well,” Scampy points out.
Andy Van Hellemond, during his tenure as Director of Officiating, discouraged the bartering and collecting.
“Mainly for that reason,” linesman Scott Driscoll says, “I’ll barter for things that are more away from hockey, like a number 68 NBA official’s jersey [Driscoll wears 68 himself, as you can partially see here. — PL], or an umpire’s jacket.”
[…]
In terms of ultimate bartering, linesman Wayne Bonney may be the one-time champion. During a transaction that took several years, crossed the continent, and involved multiple trades, Bonney pulled off a whopper.
“When I lived in Montreal, I had a friend, [we’ll call him] Jerry, who owned a marble company,” Bonney relates as background to what’s to come. “When Mario Lemieux retired the first time, he had his final game in Montreal, and he gave the jersey he wore that night to Phil Schroeder, who did scheduling for the NHL. Phil kept the sweater at his house.”
In the off-season, Bonney installed sprinkler systems, and at one point he installed one for Phil. For a decent-size house like the one Schroeder owned, the sprinkler job would normally cost about two to three thousand dollars.
“How much?” Phil asked.
“Well, if you can get me a Mario Lemieux jersey, I’ll do it for nothing,” Bonney answered after secretly admiring the number 66 hanging on the wall. Phil agreed and gave Bonney the jersey from the Montreal game.
Fast-forward to years later, with Bonney and his wife relocated to the west coast.
“I had since moved to Seattle in 1993 and was putting marble in my three bathrooms in our new house,” Bonney recalls. “My wife went to Toronto to order marble. She picked it out from Jerry’s store there — Jerry, the friend we knew from Montreal.”
When Bonney heard the prices, he winced but agreed to make the purchase. He also jumped on the phone to make Jerry a proposal and hopefully ease the pain.
“I’ll give you a Mario Lemieux jersey, signed, for your son, for some consideration on the marble,” Bonney offered. Jerry thought that sounded pretty good, but that was it — the proposal just hung there. Jerry went ahead and shipped out all of the marble, twelve to fifteen thousand dollars’ worth (retail) to Seattle. It cost seventeen hundred bucks just to ship it.
“Wayne, what understanding did you have on this marble and the Mario Lemieux sweater?” Jerry asked him after sending the invoice.
“Well, I thought you were going to give me all of the marble for the Lemieux sweater, but I thought you were f-ing nuts,” Bonney laughed.
“Yeah, well, I can’t do that. I can’t give you twelve grand worth of marble for a jersey,” Jerry came back.
“Well, yeah, I thought you were a bit nuts,” Bonney said. “I’m more than fair. What do you want to do?”
“Actually, I can get away with giving you the marble, but I can’t get away from the seventeen hundred dollars in shipping,” Jerry came back. “Can you pay it?”
“I’ll send you a check tomorrow,” Bonney replied. Bonney had his marble. What a deal — the envy of short, bald linesmen everywhere.
[…]
Bonney really let rookie linesman Baron Parker have it once.
Rookies did laundry.
“Let me have your stuff. I’ll wash it,” Parker told Bonney when they had returned to the hotel after a game in San Jose. They were doing back-to-back games there.
An hour or so after he parted with his jersey, Bonney went to the laundry room himself to get it back. With no one around, Bonney looked in the dryer, saw his jersey, grabbed it, figured it was dry enough, and walked upstairs.
“I hid it. He didn’t know I had it, so I hid it. I actually gave it to the referee.”
Not much later, Parker showed up at Bonney’s room.
“Here’s your stuff, ahhh, but there’s a problem,” Parker started.
“What’s the problem?” Bonney asked, knowing full well.
“I don’t have the jersey,” Parker replied.
“What do you mean you don’t have the jersey? I gave it to you,” Bonney pressed.
“Yeah, I know, but I can’t find it,” Parker said.
“Do you have yours?”
“Yeah, I’ve got everything, I just can’t find your jersey,” Parker admitted again.
“We’ve got a game tomorrow night at seven o’clock. You’ve got one day to find me a jersey. If you don’t find me a jersey by game time, I’m wearing your jersey and you’re going to wear a white practice jersey from the team.” Bonney was exercising seniority.
“No way,” Parker came back.
“Oh yeah,” Bonney insisted.
Bonney got a good night’s steep, woke up, and kind of forgot about the hazing-in-progress until Parker showed up at his room.
Parker started searching the room for Bonney’s jersey.
“What are you doing?” Bonney asked innocently.
“I’m checking your room,” Parker responded, thinking he was on to something. He was, of course, but Bonney wasn’t yet ready to let him off the hook. Parker had a nervous smile. Bonney played dumb.
Along came pre-game at the rink.
“Where’s my jersey?” Bonney asked Parker.
“I don’t have it,” Parker answered.
“‘That’s it, give me your jersey.” Bonney pulled rank and Parker obliged. Bonney then instructed the security guard, who already knew about the prank, to go get Parker a white jersey.
At that point, Parker tried to explain the lost jersey to his cohorts. He ran through the scenario again and again, and concluded someone must have ripped it off. The security guard came back, Parker took the white jersey, turned it inside out, and pulled it on. The referee led the linesmen down a tunnel and toward the ice to get loose, check the nets, and get the game started. Parker pulled up the rear, wearing his white jersey.
Just before they stepped onto the ice, Bonney stopped.
“I forgot my whistle, damn it. How did I forget my whistle?” Bonney shouted. He turned around and headed back toward the dressing room. Parker stepped past him and hit the ice, and started skating around in the inside-out practice jersey. Bonney went back to the room, pulled out his own linesman sweater and put it on. He took Parker’s jersey and handed it to the security guard as he stepped back onto the ice.
As the officials and players stood in the dark for the introductions and the national anthem, Parker felt like an idiot in his white jersey. Meanwhile, Bonney had a fat smirk on his face. As the lights came on, Parker was getting in position for the start of the game when Bonney pointed to the glass at the Zamboni gate. On cue, the security guard waved around Parker’s jersey.
“Look what I found,” the guard mouthed.
More relieved at that point than angry, Parker cursed out Bonney under his breath, headed to the corner, and swapped shirts.
“The only reason I gave you that jersey back,” Bonney explained, “is because [NHL Commissioner] Bettman is watching the game.”
Too bad there’s nothing about the distinction between players’ laces and officials’ laces. Still, interesting stuff — big thanks to AJ (and his OCR scanner) for the text.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Here‘s the Dodgers’ BP cap, here‘s their regular game cap, and here‘s Jeff Kent two days ago. Looks like he used a gray or silver marker to make a regular cap look like a BP cap (which sort of makes him the reverse Kenny Rogers). … The Predators will wear a “10 Seasons” patch next season (which, as Zack Bennett points out, should actually be a “10 Years” patch, because of the season lost to the strike). … Reprinted from Tuesday’s comments: Amazing striped socks worn by the Lehman softball team (full gallery here). … The English Premier League pans to unveil a new lettering/numbering design (with thanks to Dominic J. Litten). … According to an inside source, “The Mets, as part of their continuing outreach toward Hispanic markets, may introduce a sombrero-wearing Señor Met,” although the concept is far from final. Other possibilities: “Los Mets” jersey night, similar to the “Gigantes” games out in San Francisco, and “National League Heritage” games, with ’69, ’73, and ’86 throwbacks. None of this is final, though. … Interesting discussion of early hockey equipment here (with thanks to Seth Horowitz). … Nike’s latest brainstorm: Ohio State will be wearing Lebron-branded uniforms in next week’s Big Ten tourney. … Mark Messier’s number retirement ceremony had all the usual trappings: throwbacks with a commemorative patch, a little uni for Messier’s kid, blah-blah-blah. Messier appeared to have autographed his own jersey, which I presume means it was going to be auctioned off afterward. And look here: Life imitates patch. … Gator-print uniforms, yawn. … Good to see Robert Fick still has his hosiery priorities straight. … Alas, the same can’t be said of Rickie Weeks.

Is it just me, or is that Ohio State LeBron branding the worst idea ever? Heck, I can sort of understand North Carolina wearing Jordan-branded stuff. At least he went there. Other than relative proximity, LeBron and Ohio State have nothing to do with each other.
Something is just distressing about the whole thing. It’s like logo creep, naming rights, the latest boneheaded idea from Nike and college sports all thrown into some huge unholy blender…

Glad to see people as interested in Uni’s at 7:45 CT time like I am. One minor correction Paul.. it’s Rickie Weeks…not Richie.
I was wondering if someone mentioned the Marlins patch for this year yet. I did a few days ago, but I didn’t know if it got lost in the shuffle of server failures and such.

Fixed. Thanks!
I honestly have no idea what teams Robert Fick and that base runner are on, going by the uniforms. Indians-Angels? Nationals-Rangers? No clue.
Yeah, the LeBron / OSU link is pretty tenuous. I guess they need to increase their LBJ merch sales in Ohio. There should be a rule about guys who don’t go to college being brand sponsors for college teams.
More info on the Brewers. Skipper Ned Yost had the Crew run the 60-yard dash yesterday at camp. This is the first time he has done this in Spring Training. Getting to the Uni point though…When it was CF Bill Hall’s turn to run, he stripped off his Brewers uniform to reveal a Nike sprinters suit, and replaced his baseball cleats with Nike track spikes. He said he just wanted to give everyone a good laugh about the whole thing and lighten the mood. He ran it in 6.67 which isn’t too shabby for Hall. 1B Prince Fielder said Hall looked like Michael Johnson.
Here is the link to the article. link
Is Messier wearing a full uni and pads, instead of the typical sweater over the shirt and tie?
Interesting article link on shirt sponsorships in MLS upcoming this season. I don’t think MLS shirt sponsorship will change the older American pro sports but it is a change that I welcome in MLS.
Paul,
Couple of news items from my alma mater (Texas A&M).
1. The baseball team is once again wearing real stirrups this year. They look mighty good. (BTW, saw them play Arizona State. The Sun Devils are sporting some very old-school baggy pants this year.)
2. Athletic director Bill Byrne announced yesterday that the department is switching from Nike to adidas.
Anybody else notice Texas A&M plyer named “LEE” with his name on his Buttocks last night (on his warmup pants). Is that A&M’s normal sweats or was this guy really high on his name…..I don’t have a pic but it was seen pretty clearly in one of the last team huddles in regulation (or was it the first OT)……
Texas A&M AD Bill Byrne writes a weekly column about our athletic program. An interesting note in the most previous one:
“At the end of business Tuesday, Nike advised us that they will not match the bid offered by adidas to become our apparel provider. We have to go through the remaining details required by the State of Texas before that contract can be officially awarded, including approval by our Board of Regents at their March session. Once that is approved, I will provide all the details of the contract to you. ”

I was thinking the same thing. If the baserunner is Felipe Lopez, that would make him a National. If it is someone else, I have no clue as to the players’ teams. That is so weak.

Be careful. “Dollar” Bill Byrne will not hesitate to permit Adidas to dress the Aggies like clowns if the price is right.

The English Premier League pans to unveil a new lettering/numbering design . . .
As an American fan who has just recently discovered how wonderful the EPL is, my only hope is that the new numbers aren’t missing the link I’m having trouble finding clear pictures of this, but here is link example. To my knowledge, all of the EPL clubs have this feature at the bottom of their numbers. Just another tiny little feature that I love about the EPL kits.

It certainly appears that way…
Speaking of Robert Fick it appears that he has a lot of link straight. (Not Uni-related, but a good story from the Post)
link a Washington Post gallery of Nationals pictures. (it’s a Flash gallery) but of Uni-note, pictures 15 and 17 show that more Nats have hosiery priorities in order, and picture 16 is a rare sighting of Chad Cordero in a curved brim hat.
Messier’s kid is wearing a CCM jersey. I guess Reebok doesn’t make tot sizes.

Is i just me or does the “10” on the Nashville patch look like it is in St. Louis Blues colours. I know Nashville obviously wears blue and yellow as well, but they are darker, this looks like the shades the Blues use.

Reebok only makes the ‘Pro’ jerseys, or more accurately, the RBK logo only appears on Pro jerseys. There’s also a Semi-Pro jersey made, and that is branded as CCM. Most fans get the Semi-Pro because it’s about half the cost, and there’s currently no extremely small players (other than Martin St. Louis) in the NHL to warrant making pro jerseys in 5T or whatever the little Mess’ size is.
I realize that this subject has been beaten to death, but yesterday, while watching the mets- detroit game where the tigers were wearing their bp caps, a friend (who loves baseball but doesnt pay much attention to uni’s and such) says ” Is every single Tiger wearing a do-rag under their hat? CCM makes both child and toddler sizes. Both sizes are then broken down into sizes small through extra large. It appears he is wearing a child’s jersey. The toddler jerseys have the logos screened on the front. The child jerseys are like adult replicas: they have fully-embroidered patch glued onto the front of the jersey.
It appears that Messier’s son was wearing a child’s jersey.

Have to agree with Doc about the Terps unis. Both home and away are classy and have stayed that way for at least 10 years. As an aside, some other big names will make their debuts with new teams tonight in the NHL.
Gary Roberts, Joel Kwiatkowski and Gerorge Laraque will make their debut with the Penguins against the Rangers tonight. Roberts will be wearing #10, Kwiatkowski will be wearing #6, and Laraque will be wearing #27.
Ryan Smyth will be wearing #94 for the Islanders tonight when they take on St. Louis.
Martin Biron will get the start for Philadelphia tonight wearing #43 against the Bruins.
According to an inside source, “The Mets, as part of their continuing outreach toward Hispanic markets, may introduce a sombrero-wearing Señor Met,†although the concept is far from final. Actually, the Predators have just announced that the 10th Season logo will be only, a logo, at this point. They will be using it for marketing purposes according to this article:

And it is simply commemorating that Nashville has had a team for 10 years, whether or not they have officially played 10 seasons. I believe the NHL considers the 04/05 season to actually be a “cancelled season”, but a season nonetheless.

I don’t believe that’s correct. I think the Angels just caught a break because both the panel and hat are dark. The link are kind of similar in that the panel and hat are the same color (without the trim separating them), but because their hats are a lighter color, you can still see the panel.

From the Page 2 column today:
9. Those Great New Batting Practice Jerseys
Come to think of it, the new BP jerseys aren’t any good either, thanks to that embarrassing side piping. Like, do the Yankees really need to look like this? Does any team need to look like this? Or this? And what’s with the pit-stain motif? Ugh. Plus the pullover style doesn’t leave much to the imagination. The lone bright spot: The typography on the old Red Sox BP jersey design didn’t match the lettering on the regular gamer (compare the two R’s, for example), but this problem has been fixed on the new design. One small step for BP jerseys, one giant leap for — actually, it’s just a small step, period.
Ugh I hate that so much. That’s why this blog pleases me so: everyone else notices the minor flaws in everyday life. Using the open-quote instead of the apostrophe is a pet peeve of mine. Related story: at my office, there was a sign that read “Employee’s must badge in at the gate”. Ryan and others, any reason why you like seeing the little logo in the Premiership jersey numbers? I myself can’t stand it — from far away it looks like a little unreadable blob; like each digit has little holes in it.
And the fac tthat every team is made to use the same font is even worse. As long as the numbers are readable, let them go with their own traditions! Major league baseball, for example, would lose something small but special if teams like the Cubs and Red Sox were forced to use the same boring block font that about half the MLB teams choose to use.
I’ve been watching some YouTube clips of Premier League action from the 1990s and am struck by how easy these jersey numbers ar eot read compared to the ones they use now. No little logos, no names, just nice big digits:

In response to the responses about shoe strings:
1.) The BOA system is amazing. I’ve always worn regular shoe strings on my snowboard boots but with the new board, bindings, and boots this year I went for the BOA system. It’s so much easier and faster to tighten down and it doesn’t come loose–even after a full day of riding.
2.) The offcenter soccer laces–the last couple years I’ve worn these and they do make a difference. I’ve found better ball control with the outside of the foot with these laces. And also many many many soccer players wear lace covers that slip on over the shoe laces. Also my younger brother wrestles and alot of organizations are requiring that laces be taped down with athletic tape or covered with shoe guards to prevent getting caught in fingers.

The point of that link is that it’s his official roster page, and the roster lists him as wearing 31.

Ive seen this in a few places. Im thinking its a person’s mockup of what they want to see. First, the lines of the cuff are ragged, and in other pics, the neck tags are not in color. Theres a white version of it out there, and the stripes on the hem are SO ragged, its laughable.
Couple of things.
I don’t the nk the BOA system is on anythingother than kids’ skats and casual skates; not adult hockey.
Those caputals Unis are gruesome.
Some interesting EPL / Number stuff.
When competing in Europe, Real Madrid use numbers embossed withlink instead of La Liga.
link does this too.
While most EPL sides wear link, the champs get a link
I think Teebz can agree to this, that I doubt you would ever see an NHL player wearin those BOA skates. Up here in Canada, they are advertised on TV for Canadian Tire, which is a store that sells some sporting good. They are more for little kids for playing casually, and they would never be used in the NHL.

Those blue Colts trousers were one-hit wonders if I remember correctly. I’d like to add to the list of NFL uni items quickly pulled after one season. The 49ers white pants in 1996 and the Lions blue pants in 2000?
yeah but the Niners were part of their 1995 league throwback uni. They never switched to those fulltime.
Actually the Niners wore a similar pant during the 1994 season as a part of the NFL’s 75th anniversary. In ’96 and ’97 they wore white pants with their redesigned uniforms and switched back to a gold pant for the start of 1998 season.
…I guess I don’t notice it. Corporate America has brainwashed me. Every day, use the ID badge to enter the parking garage. Use it to enter the building. Use it to enter the data center. Use it to leave the building. And it’s just common usage to say “badge in at the gate”. Damn you Corporate America!!!
Fear not Ian, “The Man” hasn’t taken you over yet. Check out the 4th definition of “badge” on dictionary.com.

Watching the Red Sox – Twins game last night, both teams wearing the new BP tops, my wife said “why are they focusing on the armpits.”
Good question.
The Sox and Twins BP tops are mirror images of each other – red with blue armpits and blue with red armpits.
I agree that no NHLer would wear those BOA skates. Not too long ago, a guy on my team (jokingly) said he wanted a pair and was made fun of endlessly. Also, I’m fairly certain that (at this point in time) they don’t even come in Mens sizes.
Ok…so I have this class where we watch sports movies and discuss how they depict culture. The only problem is now when we are watching the movie I look for uni problems. This week we watched Slap Shot. One of the guys in my class asked if it was accurate, because the hockey players didn’t wear helmets. I don’t know anything about hockey but because of this blog I knew about when hockey players started to wear helmets…so thanks Uni Watch!
I love that picture of Jeff Kent. Yay Players with opinions! Me and my dad have always said “Why don’t players ever just say ‘no, those are ugly?'” (most recently about the Wizards Alternatives and the Buffaslug), and here are some MLB players doing just that!
as a long time gator fan i am opposed of the new unis. i think they need to go back to the orange retro alt. they wore last year. P.S. im trying to find a goood pic if anyone can find one
Did anyone else notice that the Cardinals, playing the Mets on the road, wore their red caps today? I hope that means their blue one is gone.

Hm, the way I read the definition, there has to be an object in the sentence such as, “Badge the man!” as in, “Give the man a badge”. Either way, I still protest “badge in” as improper.
I also changed my mind about Harding’s pink-encrusted mask after catching the Wild! in action tonight. No matter how noble the cause, the pink is downright ugly. If he wants to support his sister, he should have a pic of her on his mask. That would do it.
Professor Lukas, I love the use of the word atrophy in the ESPN column today.
If you could include more words like that in the Uni Watch posts, my increased vocab would probably help me get a promotion at work.

The Cards, if my memory serves me, never wear blue caps with the road unis until the season starts. I know for a fact they didn’t wear them until Opening Day last season.
Those BOA skates are terrible for blocking shots because the dial, which is made of plastic, breaks off way too easily. The dial is actually designed for younger players to help them tighten their skates without the help of an adult. I have yet to see a pro hockey player wear them since, as someone said, they only come in youth and junior sizes.
In regards to the Slapshot question, the NHL passed a mandatory rule that any player entering the NHL after the summer of 1979 had to wear a helmet. Players that did not wear helmets before that were allowed to be grandfathered through. Craig MacTavish was the last player not to wear a helmet, and he retired after the 1996-97 season.
I’ve never seen the Pens wear this sweater. It’s got the official vintage “V” on the collar tag, so I assume it’s going to be brought out at some point? Or at least on sale somewhere?

according to site link (a petty sweet site), it was worn from 77-79

Why does the NFL always do stuff like this? Making the player block out the NFL shield on his jersey?

I’m rather certain the Prem decided to put its own logo in the numbers when manufacturers started to put their own logos in there, link.
That Caps logo is really nice, but the jersey is so bad… it’s like a hybrid of every hockey uniform on the planet (shoulder yoke, shoulder piping, piping down the side, stars on the sleeve, underarm contrast colour, alternate underarm contrast colour, and so on…), with bad tones of red and blue… I really hope that whoever designed this comes to their senses and realizes that all isn’t better…

I still want to see UNC’s rumored new tourny unis….
is it just me, or did my post at like 9:30 disappear?
