  • Also posted in the college football section: Rays P Jake Diekman wore a Nebraska football helmet on the field prior to yesterday’s game. Diekman is a Nebraska native, and had a full baseball scholarship offer from the school that he declined in order to go pro. (From Andrew Cosentino)

NBA

  • The Nuggets are apparently without a uni advertiser, and have even gone the extra mile to scrub the ad patch from old photos — a surprisingly positive development, considering we’ve often seen the reverse happen. “I’m sure there are wheels turning to get another deal in place, but I’m going to relish this ad-free bliss for my NBA Champion team while I can,” says Andrew Monson.

International

  • The Canadian Premier League has introduced two new trophies, with the CPL Shield going to the regular season champion, and the North Star Cup replacing the North Star Shield for the playoff champion. (From Wade Heidt)
  • England: Brighton and Hove Albion keeper Jason Steele wore the club’s second kit from two seasons ago/third kit from last season, rather than the standard keeper’s kit. More details here. (Thanks, Jamie)
  • England: Aston Villa went sans betting ad for their Europa Conference League trip to Legia Warszawa in Poland. Poland has laws restricting gambling advertisements.
  • Scotland: Also in the Europa Conference League, Aberdeen wore last season’s second shirt for the second game in a row. This time it appeared with white shorts and socks that they don’t otherwise wear. “They didn’t really match — the shirt had red accents, the shorts and socks had black accents, the shirt had red numbers, and the shorts had black numbers. It didn’t bother me that much but I know that’s the kind of thing that would annoy the shit out of some readers,” says our own Jamie Rathjen.

NHL uniform ranking blog not bad. Insightful assessment. Would say got the 3 worst ones right (Kings, Blue Jackets, Ducks). Should have put the Capitals is the bottom 4. These teams suffer from the phenomenon known as the Reebok Edge hangover.

As a Blue Jackets fan, I was ready to be mad but you know what? That assessment is spot on. It’s time for a change.

Kings and Ducks desperately need to go modernized versions of 90s era sweaters. Same for the Jets. Seeing them all do that for alts just makes you want to shake their director of marketing “this is your full time sweater!!!”

    RE: NHL uniform ranking

Am I wrong, or does uniform “set” not usually refer to all of a team’s uniforms, or at least their home and away looks? The article is specifically about home uniforms.

At least it includes photos throughout and the author actually put some time into the article.

I would have ranked the New Jersey Devils lower. Simply because they need to go back to the more classic jersey striping they were wearing when winning Stanley Cups.

Agreed. The Devils should be a little lower, and the Blues should be significantly higher. I’m sure there are other changes I would make as well. Though I have no problem ranking the Red Wings’ red jerseys in the middle of the road, because while they are classic and iconic, they are also plain, and the red sleeves on the white jersey give just that much more flair. (White sleeves on the red jersey, though, I don’t think would be a good idea.)

I totally agree about the Devils. Changed what was becoming an iconic uniform for the sake of change. They need to do something about that alternate set ASAP!

I personally felt the nhl jersey ranker was off. Examples were St Louis top 10, Minnesota top 10, Detroit top 10, Philadelphia top 10. San Jose bottom 10, New Jersey bottom 10, Vegas bottom 10. Biggest head scratcher was New Jersey over Toronto?? come on..

While I didn’t read the NHL uni-ranking piece, I’m sure the term “iconic” is used throughout.
    I’ll set the over/under at 14.

That Ravens combo is their worst…gives me Chicago XFL vibes:

Bruins would have been better off with a modernized version of the 80s/90s look. Put the Centennial patch on the shoulder for this season then replace with Meth Bear next. The extra sleeve stripe and Vegas gold coloring is doing too much. The third jersey though is beautiful, that’s the one I bought. Hoping the home & away truly are a one off.

Rays P Jake Diekman may have had a baseball scholarship offer to play at Nebraska, but it’s very unlikely that it was a full scholarship offer. College baseball teams are only allowed 11.7 scholarships, and almost no one gets a full ride.

Sharks are ranked way, WAY too highly on that blog…. but hey, it’s Bleacher Report, wasn’t expecting sound reasoning.

I’m a patch guy. Enjoyed when a team had a patch for anniversary, old or new stadium, memorial for connected personnel, etc. But the amount of patches on that Giants jersey..its outrageous, egregious, preposterous. And that isn’t even the horrible twisted freak patch on the other arm.

I really don’t get the hate for the L. A. Kings won uniform. I love it!! Best color combination and it reminds me of a certain Silver and Black clad team in Las Vegas… Disrespecting the color scheme of Kings is disrespecting the RAIDERS.
