In today’s Ticker, we’ve got perhaps the best one-off jersey promotion in hockey history, a great Dale Earnhardt anecdote, and more!

  • The Orioles have stenciled their O’s logo onto Federal Hill in Baltimore, and added a No. 5 for Brooks Robinson for good measure. (From Andrew Cosentino)

  • The Patriots reacquired CB J.C. Jackson this week, and he will wear No. 29, rather than the No. 27 he wore in his first stint with the team, which is now worn by fellow CB Myles Bryant.

  • East Carolina unveiled new BFBS unis yesterday, which made their debut last night. (From Kary Klismet)

  • The WHL’s Vancouver Giants will be wearing these terrific sweaters for Referee Appreciation Night on Oct. 22. An incredible gesture, since we often see minor league and amateur officials berated by fans to an even greater extent than major league officials. Further details here. (From multiple readers)

  • In the 1988 Myrtle Beach 200, a Busch Series race, Dale Earnhardt’s crew had to hastily change his iconic 3 to an 8 with duct tape, as there was already a No. 3 registered for the race. I wouldn’t have wanted to be the driver who registered with No. 3 — they didn’t call Dale “The Intimidator” for nothing. (From Trevor Williams)
Grab Bag
  • Two Philadelphia City Council members are discussing changing the city’s flag. (From Michael Driscoll, who is not the city council member mentioned in the article; they just happen to share a name)
  • The University of Iowa’s student newspaper has an in-depth feature on the school’s mascot, Herky the Hawk, to celebrate his 75th birthday. (From Kary Klismet)

That ‘other’ #3 was driven by Mike Porter:

Engine trouble at Lap 5….hmmmm. ; )…and may have looked like his Daytona ride from that season?:

If you scroll over you’ll see Dale Sr. in a right/proper #8.

Porter also once drove a car painted up with WV Mountaineers ‘sponsorship’…cross-over alert!

    Referee Appreciation Night

    It’s about time!

From the late 80s or early 90s onward, I would cheer whenever the umpires were announced at a baseball game.
If I ever go back to a MLB game, there are two umps who shall remain nameless who will not receive my applause, but at least I won’t boo them.

It was mentioned the refs are getting special uniforms for the game, too. Good idea! Otherwise confusion would reign.

The Commanders played Down to the level of the look of their uniforms Last Night. That all black look is horrid.

Hard telling if Stills was a sports fan or just a jersey fan. He wore a Browns jersey on one of his album covers.

Something that has been bugging me for a while on NFL uniform announcements is not including the socks. I know socks are in a horrible place currently but I used to see the 3 color (in this case black, white, purple) as referencing the jersey, pants, socks for pros but helmet, jersey, pants for college as college has different sock regulations.

So can we get for NFL a helmet/jersey/pants/socks?
