Football

NFL

  • The Bears will wear No. 51 patches honoring Dick Butkus this Sunday. Here’s a look at the patch and placement on the jersey. (Thanks, Phil)
  • After being repeatedly fined for uniform violations, Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill now says he will “comply” with uniform mandates. (Thanks, Phil)
  • Here’s a look at the reasoning behind — and the inconsistent enforcement of — the league’s rule against players removing their helmets on the field. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Another writer has given us their choices for each NFL team’s best and worst uniform combinations. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Four of the NFL Network’s Good Morning Football hosts wore replica creamsicle jerseys on Thursday’s show to celebrate the return of the Buccaneers’ throwbacks this weekend. (From Kary Klismet)

College

  • Two Virgina Tech linemen reportedly became the first two players to wear SAFR (Scientifically Advanced Force Reduction) helmet covers in a game on September 30th against Pitt. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Here are this weekend’s combos for Utah, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, WSU, Tulane, and Oregon.

CFL

  • BC Lions DL David Ménard appears to have his jersey sewn to his undershirt in these screengrabs. (From Dave Hilbert)
Hockey

NHL

  • A blogger has ranked all 32 NHL home sweaters. (Thanks, Phil)

Minors/Juniors

  • New sweaters for the ECHL’s Norfolk Admirals (very loud video autoplay warning). I think the way the chest logos are on a separate patch and not directly sewn makes them look kinda cheap, no? (Thanks, Phil)
  • The WHL’s Portland Winterhawks wore Freddy Krueger-inspired sweaters for Friday’s game. No word on if they were adding skate blades to their gloves. (From Shane McMahon and @pdxblazerfan)
Basketball
  • Check out the uniforms the Soviet Union wore at the 1986 FIBA World Cup. Why they stuck the front number up there, when they have the entire rest of the chest I don’t know, but it was apparently common with Soviet basketball jerseys at the time. Get a load of the NNOB — nation name on back.
Soccer

International

  • Argentina: New home shirt for CA Independiente. (From Ed Zelaski)
  • Germany:Here’s a (very) brief look at the stadiums in the first 60 years of the Bundesliga’s history. (From Kary Klismet)
Auto Racing
  • We have our first look at the paint schemes Marco Andretti of Spire Motorsports will use when he returns to the NASCAR Truck series for races on October 22nd and November 5th. (From Kary Klismet)
Grab Bag
  • NBC Sports Boston talking head Michael Felger said Thursday night that Boston teams have too many alternate and throwback unis. He anecdotally mentions a producer who owns 112 hockey jerseys, and invited him on his radio show yesterday to discuss it. Felger and his cohost, ex-NFL linebacker Ted Johnson, then continued to change in and out of the jerseys the producer brought for the rest of the segment. (From @dj_smitty)
  • New team name and athletics logo for the Boys Home high school in Virginia. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Here’s a fun article on the history of flight attendant uniforms and how they’re changing in modern times. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Florida State College at Jacksonville is seeking public input on a new mascot. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Interesting deconstruction of the Minnesota state flag as a commission looks at redesigning both the state flag and state seal. (From Mike Menner)

That “best and worst uniform” article has been posted here multiple times before and it’s still wrong about the Jets.

The Rangers sweater font could be described as block, I don’t think script is correct, as stated in the article.

Since the common thread with disparaging the Blackhawks’ sweaters is the Indian iconography, is the actual Black Hawk Squadron insignia available instead?

Key phrase: “Tom Brady wants to wear these before he retires.” Here’s something that *should* be retired– this article.

For whatever it’s worth, all these “best of/worst of” uni listicles sort of blend together to the point where they all look the same to me, and I guess we now have confirmation that sometimes they literally are the same. I try to pay attention to publication dates before submitting Ticker items to make sure they’re timely, but if an article is continually updated, even in the smallest way, sometimes it keeps popping up iny news feed (this one, the last time I checked, said “updated 37 minutes ago”).

I don’t love these types of lists in the first place; I don’t think these authors’ opinions are any better or more carefully considered than my own. But others in the conm-uni-ty seem to like them, which is why I submit them for The Ticker. And they always generate discussion in the comments – just like they did today. So, love them or hate them, you talk about them! Even if – perhaps especially if – you’ve seen them before. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And that Colorado played half a game last night…

The unfortunate thing is, the Buffs wore their traditional gold/black/gold unis and blew a 29-0 lead in them. I don’t want to hear Deion using that to justify not wearing them again.

I hate it when a school jettisons a nickname that is storied and antiquated for something that “the kids will love”. I assume there was a story behind “Hilltoppers”, probably geographical. It’s a hell of a lot more interesting than “Bears”. Gee, never heard of a team with that name before…oh, but it comes with a neat mascot! At least the new logo looks kind of 40s-ish.

Purdue North Central were called the “Centaurs” for years until some AD with a love for ‘cool’ mascots changed it to “Panthers”.

I’ll die on this hill saying unique is better.

You won’t die alone. I’m totally with you. Anyway, there’s no rule saying that the mascot has to match the nickname. Witness UNC, Alabama, Georgetown, Akron, VMI, and Virginia Tech.

Right. They could’ve remained the Hilltoppers, and still repped with the Bear mascot/logo. They could’ve called him “Topper”.

But that would require an appreciation of history and someone who could think outside the box.

An interesting choice for Michigan today… blue jersey, blue pants, maize socks. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen that combo. It’s usually been blue socks with the blue pants.

    Spire Gets It!
Those shades of yellow and blue, in the right measures, look so great on racing vehicles and uniforms.
That being said, the Eagles ‘worst’ look is far from it…it’s the all BFBS set, which they will (hopefully) never ever ever wear again!
PS-KC’s ‘best’ is nothing of the sort – and is only marginally better than mono-red.

Something I have always wondered……. I have seen videos of helmet prep where they polish most of the scratches out every week before a game. How do they prep the helmets with the matte finish?

Jimmer, the &1 tomorrow should be Washington-Oregon. Not because it’s the worst of the day, but because it should have been the best. Washington in their gold pants and almost any combo of green/yellow/white for Oregon would have looked amazing. Instead, we got Washington in all grape from the waist down and Oregon’s “eggshell” looked like the reverse negative of bird droppings.
