[Editor’s note: Welcome to “Collector’s Corner” now hosted by Chris Weir. Chris approached me about restarting CC, vowing to uphold the old look and style, but with one new twist: he will make each edition timely with what is going on currently in the sports world (i.e. rivalry games, big events, anniversary of events). Enjoy! — PH]
Collector’s Corner
by Chris Weir
The final leg of the Triple Crown is this weekend as the Belmont Stakes will be held at Saratoga Race Course while Belmont Park continues its renovations. Next year only the Kentucky Derby will be held at its traditional venue as the Preakness will be at Laurel Park and the Belmont will be at Saratoga one more time. I’ll spare you my picks since they haven’t been doing well and I’m too busy to even pay attention to the race.
• This year’s Belmont Stakes will have the same logo as Last Year’s logo except for the year of course. I’m a fan of the logo as it incorporates Saratoga’s iconic grandstand roof with a nice color combo of dark green and dark gold.
• There are a lot of happenings on this T-Shirt from last year’s Belmont Stakes but since there’s no year on it I guess it could be from this year.
• This Gym Bag from the Fall 1984 Meet is Belmont Park related and not Belmont Stakes related but since I like it so much I had to include it.
• Here is a nice Framed Piece featuring the iconic photograph of Secretariat’s historic ride at the 1973 Belmont Stakes. Here is a really interesting Article from a few years back investigating who actually took that photo.
• This Glass from the 1978 Belmont Stakes features images of all of the horses up to that point who had won the Triple Crown.
• Bet you didn’t know that the Belmont Stakes’ official flower is the white carnation which is featured on this T-Shirt from the 1988 Belmont Stakes.
• They really did make everything into a Board Game back in the day.

Nice to see Collector’s Corner back, nice job Chris
“They really did make everything into a Board Game back in the day.”
Well, we only had five to seven TV channels and no internet…it was board games or twiddle your thumbs. Seen a lot of games in my day, but never that one. Thanks for sharing, Chris!
Just a friendly question: Have you ever considered placing single photos of the items directly in Collector’s Corner? I’m not saying I’m too lazy to click on the links… but I am.
It wouldn’t be right to feature people’s items for sale without out at least directing people to the page for purchase.
