As you’re all (most) likely aware, the NFL and Nike are introducing the “Rivalries” uniform program in which all 32 teams will receive a new uniform “rooted extensively in local community insights” over the next four seasons, with eight teams (two divisions per year) getting new Rivalries uniforms this upcoming season.
The two divisions getting the new looks this season will be the AFC East and NFC West teams: Buffalo, Miami, New England and New York (Jets) from the AFC, and Arizona, Los Angeles (Rams), San Francisco and Seattle from the NFC.
The NFL/Nike have said next to nothing about the uniforms after the initial announcement, so pundits, fans and, yes, uni aficionados, have begun searching for any clues as to potential uniforms and helmets, and one of the more obvious places to look is the teams themselves. The 49ers, one of the eight teams scheduled to get a Rivalries uni this fall, just underwent a brand refresh — it’s possible some of that will make its way into the Rivalries uniform.
A couple days ago, the Dolphins social team seemed to be dropping hints about the new design. First, they showed a neon-looking aqua logo in a tweet about their schedule release (curiously on a box that looks a little like one of those promo packages), and just yesterday they changed their avatar to the logo in that tweet.

Aside from the pair of “Miami Vice” concepts I showed yesterday, the Internet is rife with black Miami Vice concepts, and already the Interwebs thinks it offers a clue:

Just a minor bit of googling reveals that the black helmet with the aqua dolphin logo is available for sale (and was before the Rivalries program was unveiled), so I certainly don’t think the helmet depicted in the tweet is anything other than a novelty helmet.
Still — changing their avatar to the logo in neon might be related to a possible Rivalries uniform logo. And while I don’t think the helmet shown above is related to the Rivalries program, I don’t think it’s that far-fetched either.
We know the Dolphins aren’t changing either their primary uniforms or throwbacks this year. Sure, the neon aqua logo could just be that and nothing more. But it could also be a clue as to the Dolphins’ Rivalries uni.
Let’s look at that video again, this time, with the full tweet.

Is the “We’re done looking back.” part of the text anything? It doesn’t seem to apply to the schedule release, unless it’s implying that whatever happened last season is over, and now the team will be focused on their upcoming 17 games. That’s entirely possible.
So the new avatar could be nothing or it could be something. People will look for clues in anything and it is not out of the realm of possibility that the logo is portending a Rivalries uniform logo. And as we’ve seen, it almost feels too on brand for Nike to create a “Miami Vice” uni.
Thoughts?
Umm… where is the throwback logo?
My apologies — not sure how I ended up with that in there. Any “throwback” references have now been removed.
I’ve been working on no sleep and a lot of personal stress. That’s not an excuse.
Again, my apologies.
No need to apologize, Phil! We all understand. Give yourself a little grace. :-)
I was momentarily very excited because I thought I’d missed that the Dolphins went back to their original logo style and that the cruise ship logo was now the throwback logo.
Yep to that first sentence…
This post refers to both, “the black helmet with the aqua throwback dolphin logo,” and, “the throwback logo in neon,” but both the black helmet and the logo in the Twitter avatar are the current logo.
Just to point out, the logo depicted is not the throwback Dolphin Logo, just a neon version of their current craptacular logo.
Nothing says warm, tropical Miami like a matte black helmet. Sigh. Nike is at it again. At this point, I need to make my peace with the whole process. All sports leagues will have a yearly turnover of needless multiple uniforms…many of which have zero connection to their established brand. It’s here and not going anywhere.
SOUTH BEACH NIGHTS, DUDE!
NIKE doesn’t make these helmets, and has zero input on the design. Riddell does. They sell black and white “Fashion Helmets” for every team. They are very popular in the autograph world, and will never see the field.
So your ire for NIKE is 100% misplaced here.
Black with neon does fit with a Miami party scene pretty well. Pretty sure neon signs is a calling card for Ocean Drive.
Kinda miss the one shell rule now.
Regrettably I was hoping that the new rule would bring in gorgeous throwbacks which they have , but if we’re gonna do black garbage for all of these Rivalries, I’m out.
So they start by inverting their all-white uniform into an all-black one, and adjust the aqua to a neon-type color? That’s not a terrible approach, if that was their thought process. Having said that, looking at these Rivalry uniforms very skeptically is probably the best approach.
With the other 2 major sports in Miami already going “vice” style, and the university, it just makes sense for the Dolphins to go “vice”. Hopefully it’s white with blue numbers and pink outline.
Personally, I don’t think the new avatar has anything to do with new uniforms. It’s just promoting their new schedule release video, which NFL social media teams see as their Super Bowl these days.
I’m really hoping this Rivalry stunt isn’t just all-white and all-black versions of each team’s uniforms with a hometown accent color. Similar to MLB Player’s Weekend in 2019.
Most of the black/pink/aqua mock-ups I’ve seen look good enough to want to see that color scheme in action. I know the “Vice City” look is cliche by now, but also I think it sticks around because it’s just a cool looking set of colors, it works.
Incoming “vice nights” uniform. While matte black wouldn’t surprise me, I’m guessing “midnight aqua” in a rippling water design.
Awful, just awful.
Am I alone in thinking the original aqua and coral were plenty “vice”?
If this is true…..enough of the black alternates, my God.
That dolphin on the black helmet looks like Shamu! Killer (whale) design, guys! I’m thinking that avatar is just an avatar and nothing more. Let’s not read too much into this.
They trying for the Sharks look from Any Given Sunday?

As a diehard Dolphins fan, I truly hope they are more creative than this.
The helmet and the avatar are different. They seem to be inverse of each other. I prefer the avatar if I had to choose.
The profile pic change is nothing more than a nod to the visuals seen in the schedule release video. Carry on
