Boston Red Sox Tease New City Connect Uniform

Posted in:

Good morning, Uni Watchers. It’s Friday — we made it!

As I noted in yesterday morning’s lede (in the “And finally…” section), the Red Sox did indeed tease their new City Connect uniform yesterday afternoon. And as the big story won’t happen until this afternoon, I’ll keep this article short.

The teaser video actually reveals little (considering how the team was aware of the leak), but for those who don’t obsess over the minutia of the athletic aesthetic but do follow the Red Sox on social media, the tease was probably pretty exciting.

Indeed, “tomorrow” is now today, and the uniforms will be officially revealed at 3:30 pm today. And as I mentioned yesterday, I’ll have a full preview today at 3:30 sharp. I’ve already seen the full uniforms and trust me when I say, I think everyone will really like them. So make sure to set a reminder to check back here at 3:30 for the full run down.

I also want to thank Kate Reilly and Troup Parkinson from the Red Sox for discussing the unis at length with me and providing me with the early access to the unveiling materials. Troup was especially knowledgable and he also totally GetsIt™ and is definitely a Uni Watcher. So I look forward to sharing the new unis with you guys.

The Sox really are waiting till the last minute to unveil these (although admittedly the anticipation is half the fun), and in fact won’t even wear the new uniforms for pre-game warmups and BP — they’ll wear their regular BP gear, then change into the new uniforms just before first pitch. While I’m sure many fans in attendance will see the new unis on their phones, for others — and probably there will be some fans who have no idea the new CC is coming — their first look at the new uniform will be a surprise.

I’ll have more articles today besides the 3:30 unveil, but you’ll definitely want to check back here for that. See you then.

A Uni-que Milwaukee Brewers Helmet!

I got the following e-mail from reader David Scherzer who has exposed a unique uniform quirk I’m pretty sure we’ve never noticed over the years. At the very least it’s new to me, and I’m sure to you as well.

I’ll let David explain:

Hi Phil.

How are you? Not sure if this was ever discussed but I think I came across something unique. Back in the mid ’70s the Brewers wore a road cap that had a gold front with a blue “M” logo.

First baseman George Scott wore a helmet in the field with the same gold front.

However, the Brewers just had one helmet for home and road, all blue with a gold M. But in road games, Scott wore his unique helmet when he batted as well. So, it appears he was the only player ever to wear a Brewers road helmet.

I can’t think of another instance where one player wore a different style helmet than his teammates. Can you shed some light on this?

Sincerely,

David Scherzer
Westfield, NJ

Thanks, David! Honestly, I never realized the home/road batting cap discrepancy, but absolutely, I think you may have hit on something here. Unfortunately, Dressed to the Nines doesn’t show batting helmets, and the Crew wore those roadies for four seasons. Sadly, I don’t have the time now to scour four years of photos to be sure the team never wore the helmet seen on Scott at bat. But back then, most teams only used one batting helmet (and only had two uniforms), so it certainly makes sense that Scott’s helmet was indeed unique.

As to the second part — unless a mistake was somehow made, I have never heard of a player wearing a different helmet from his teammates…so this could be the first (and only) example of this.

Readers? Do any of you have any insight to David’s questions?

Uniform Concepts and Tweaks

Time for more Uni Tweaks from the UW readership.

I hope you guys like this feature and will want to continue to submit your concepts and tweaks to me. If you do, Shoot me an E-mail (Phil (dot) Hecken (at) gmail (dot) com).

Today’s concepts come from Jeffrey Kruger.

Good day, Phil. Here’s fun, self-initiated design exercise.

Inspired by big bold stripes — like the Devels alternate black “Jersey” sweaters . . .

And by the various skating cartoon talisman illustrations of the era . . .

I offer these very stripy Cleveland (AHL) throwbacks, with team’s secondary “mascot on-ice” logos as their crest.

First one is a mashup between the 1959 and 1960 Cleveland Baron home sweaters.

Shoulders from one year, striped pattern from the other (but keep those barber pole socks).

Research samples and comments included, as well as nice patch to celebrate 36 seasons at The Arena.

_____
Second one is a reinterpretation of their 1950-51 road sweaters.

I chose antique white for the base, no outlines for stars or numbers – as the new crest is plenty colorful, and striped units are large.

Gonna have to move the patch to the pants leg for this one, there’s a lot going on up front.

This was a fun research project, helped greatly by Gene Kiczek’s book “Forgotten Glory”, a great source of photos/information.

Perhaps this concept has a place in 2027 — for a 90-year commemoration of the Barons name and their (then new) home ice in 1937.

Most sincerely,
JEFF KRUGER

OK readers (and concepters). If you have some tweaks or concepts, shoot ’em my way with a brief description of your creation and I’ll run ’em here.

Guess the Game from the Scoreboard

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Nate Gervais.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

Guess the Game from the Uniform

Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Oscar Bergstrom.

Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.

And finally...

…that’s it for the early post, but there will be several more to follow today, including Susan’s Ticker, and of course the big one at 3:30 ET, so you’ll definitely want to check back several times.

Everyone have a good Friday and a better weekend. Anthony will take you though till Monday, when next I’ll see you guys.

Till then…

Peace,

PH

“trust me when I say, I think everyone will really like them” oh how optimistic you are about the UniWatch faithful!

In truth, I like the Fenway alternates. Just like I like the Celtics alternates which look like the championship banners. These are actually replicating things you see in the arena.

The rest? Big fat MEH. Or “FEH!”

Yeah, most people on this site will continue calling the City Connect program a Nike “merch dump”. While, yes, I suppose it is true, it’s a very pessimistic way of looking at this program. Do some of these unis look bad? Oh, absolutely. Detroit comes to mind. Are some of the storytelling elements (especially area codes- looking at you, Tigers, Brewers, and Marlins) very shoehorned in? Yes. Is the black text on a black jersey a problem with some of them? Again, definitely. But I personally love the concept, and I like most of these jerseys, even if they “were only created to sell more merchandise”.

GTGFTS – First MLB Field of Dreams game, 8/11/22. The White Sox beat the Yankees 9-8. Game was played at the historic Field of Dreams in Dyersville, IA which was created for the movie of the same name. While I wasn’t at the game, I live about an hour away. :-)

Wonderful concepts for the Barons…uh, Monsters! What a story about that helmet, it is the first time I have ever seen a baseball fielder wear a batting helmet while not running the bases. As for the Red Sox reveal, the hints that we have seen so far look promising: Green Monster.

May have been the first guy to wear it on the field, but he was not the last. J.O. wore a fielding helmet many years.

Fingers crossed for these green Sox unis! Phil, you’ve really gotten my hopes up!

Mariners wear throwback unis of Steelheads, Negro Baseball League team with rich heritage. June 19 2021 Seattle Mariners defeat Tampa Bay Rays Saturday night at Safeco Field/T Mobile Field.
JP Crawford hits a grand slam in the third and score in bottom of 10th to win game. Logan Gilbert pitched 5 2/3 innings with 7k’s. Tampa wore blue road jerserys. I was there.

Didn’t John Olerud have 2 different fielding helmets during his early days in Toronto even though they had one batting helmet for home and road?

The Barons blue throwback concept reminds me more of the Capitals 2015 Winter Classic jerseys than the Devils’ black ones

I’m going entirely from memory here.

I wrote a weekend piece years ago on the various teams that wore panel caps. This came up for the Mariners, who never wore panel caps but for some reason had a white front panel on their batting helmets. Their catcher (Bochte?) was often in a different helmet than his teammates.
