The Jacksonville Jaguars were one of the most active teams last season in terms of uniforms. Not only did they introduce a new white helmet, they thrilled Duval fans (and any NFL fans with eyes) when they announced they were introducing a throwback — which they wore not just once, but then surprised most folks when they wore them a second time last season.
As you may recall, the Jaguars also wore a whopping 12 different uniform combos in 2024, and have been among the league leaders the past several seasons in terms of wearing different combinations. One of the combinations the team repeated, of course, was the “Prowler” throwbacks.

The throwbacks are obviously very popular among fans, but one of the biggest fans of the look is the Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations — and former player — Tony Boselli.
Boselli recently made an apperance on “Jaguars Today” on 1010 XL, and made an announcement fans of the Prowlers are certain to love:
"I would wear those damn (Prowler uniforms) EVERY GAME if we were allowed to." 👀

There’s a lot to unpack there.
First of all, and as you’re all likely aware, the NFL has changed its policies towards alternate uniforms for 2025. Teams can now wear alternates (either their third/alternate jersey, throwback or Color Rush) up to four times a season, up from three. In addition, teams will also be permitted to wear their alternate helmets with their primary home or road uniforms. Previously, teams were restricted to pairing alternate helmets with alternate uniforms. That not only opens the door for the Jags to (potentially) come up with 17 different combos, but also to wear their throwbacks more often. And according to Boselli, that they will.
“I believe it’s four times that we can wear the Prowlers, and we’re going to maximize and wear those Prowlers as much as we can,” he stated (obviously aware of the new alternate usage rules). Hopefully that means the Jags will wear their throwbacks four times this upcoming season. If that is the case, that would basically also mean the Jaguars will be mothballing their new white helmets, since wearing the Prowlers four times would preclude the wearing of the white hat.
But Boselli has hinted at what I’ve been hearing over the past year — that the Jaguars will make the Prowlers their permanent primary uniforms (they’d slide the throwbacks to their primaries, and add a white throwback jersey as the primary road kit). Unfortunately for those of us wanting the switch, Boselli basically said that change won’t be happening this season.
When asked whether the Jaguars could bring back the Prowlers on a permanent basis, Boselli said “Well, I’m with the fans. You know where I lie. I would wear those things every game if we’re allowed. I think this year we’re allowed to wear them up to four. We will maximize anytime we can wear the power of the old school jerseys, they will be on. There are league rules of how often you can change the jerseys. I will abide by those rules.”

The Jaguars last redesigned their uniforms for the 2018 season, so they could make the Prowler throwbacks their primaries if they so desire. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound as though that will be happening for 2025.
“We can’t change them immediately to be a full-time jersey,” he added. “Stay tuned. We’ll communicate that as we have the opportunity to at our next Jersey change. But for this year, expect us to maximize. I believe it’s four times that we can wear the Prowlers, and we’re going to maximize and wear those Prowlers as much as we can.”
It wasn’t immediately clear what Boselli means by “we can’t change them immediately” — under current uniform rules, the Jaguars could make the Prowlers primaries, as they’ve already passed the “five year rule” restricting such changes. Still, the mere fact that he mentions making them permanent indicates this is the likely uniform direction the team will take in the not-too-distant future.

So, based on Boselli’s comments, we can expect the Jags to wear their throwbacks four times this season, which is great news. As far as the timeframe for designating the throwbacks as primaries (much as the Jets did last year, when they moved their then-throwback “Sack Exchange” uniform to primary status), that will need to wait, but based on Boselli’s remarks, that won’t be happening in 2025.
What are your thoughts? Do you like the throwbacks? Are you hoping they’ll make them “full-time” as Boselli indicates they will? And will anyone be sad to see the white helmet shelved?
Fire away.
And if you’re curious, the entire interview can be seen here:
I hope they go back to a moderized version of it, with their current logo on the helmet and a updated “Prowler” logo.
no… keep the old logo their new logo is gross
Agreed
With no context the new logo is better. But the old logo looks far better on the black helmet in the context of the uniforms. I’ve seen mock ups of the new logo on what is essentially the throwback uniform, and it doesn’t look right, I think it is the white in the new logo that throws the design off balance.
You bring up a good point!
I personally still prefer the newer logo, but if they were to go back to the old one it wouldn’t be the end of the world, especially if it came with these uniforms. I do like the old logo, I just prefer the new one.
Keep it the way it is in terms of the throwback. Give Nike an inch and they will quickly destroy the uniform
I have no real allegiance to any NFL team… but man I have a weird little soft spot for the Jaguars and these uniforms.
High school was the only time I ever played football. And my high school in Oregon were the Jaguars… with black, teal, and silver with the main school colors. Our helmet logo was very close to that throwback logo, on the black helmet.
It might sound a little weird, but it makes me root for the Jags a little because of that. I love these uniforms and hope they keep them.
These are better and more eye appealing than the standard ones they wear now.
Love these uniforms. Never should have changed. Since changes did happen since then, I’d be surprised if the throwbacks aren’t even changed a little bit. Usually throwback logos have to stay throwback, because the leagues don’t want an old throwback logo to be…not a throwback anymore. It cannibalizes a merchandise stream. I seem to recall that’s why the Miami Dolphins didn’t quite go straight throwback, and I KNOW that’s why the New York Jets did the most subtle tweak to the helmet logo, so it technically isn’t exactly the same as Sack Exchange.
I’m assuming his “not right now” comment is because of one of 2 things. Either they didn’t get the request submitted in time to make the change this year, since those have to be done well in advance, or Nike/NFL have put a freeze on changes so they can roll out their fancy Rivalry uniforms that they will for sure be so proud of.
My guess is prowlers 4 times in 2025 and 2026. Then they bring them back full time in 2027
Phil another reminder these are uniforms not “Kits”. This cross contamination of a soccer term needs to stop now, before it becomes the norm.
Fred, I’m not considering your opinion on anything uniform-related until you (at the very least) wash that hideous sweater.
A kit refers to the entire uniform. It’s not specific to soccer. A full uniform in any sport can be referred to as a kit. Just because you’re some “we can’t have soccer terms touch our real man American sport” blowhard doesn’t mean the use of kit is incorrect here.
It’s not so much a “soccer term” as a British term, like “lorry” for “truck,” or “holiday” for “vacation,” or “jumper” for “sweater,” or “chips” for “fries.”
I like their current uniforms, but the prowlers aren’t that big of a change, really. Whatever.
What does allowed really mean? I can see not being able to work through the entire apparatus to have a logo and uniform designed and manufactured and all that outside the five year or any required window but what about a uniform you already have?
What would actually happen if the Jags wore them every single game they were allowed to wear a dark jersey? If there’s a color class the Refs step in, but if not would the league just fine them into oblivion? There can’t be any impact on wins or losses.
Why would they need to mothball the white helmet if alternate helmets can be worn with primary uniforms? If anything, wearing the throwback 4 times means they’d mothball their black jersey since that’s the alternate uniform.
If they wear the Prowlers four times, then they’ve reached their alternate limit. So unless they want to wear the white helmet with the throwback, that means the white helmet cannot be worn (IF they wear the Prowler four times).
The new rule allows one more alt usage, and allows a team to pair the alternate helmet with a primary uniform. But no matter how it’s chosen, teams can wear alts a max of four games.
I think what he is asking is what specifically the alternate limit is on? Is it on the number of games you can wear an alternate helmet? The number of games you can wear an alternate jersey? The number of games you can wear either an alt helmet or alt jersey?
I interpreted the rule as each team has designed standard home and road uniforms (well, helmet and jersey anyway), and any deviation from those counts as the use of an alternate.
I don’t think I’ve been unclear with this.
A team can wear an alternate four times max. How teams want to divvy that up is up to them. But if the Jags wear their throwbacks four times, then they cannot wear the white helmet, as the white helmet is an alternate. If teams want to wear say, throwbacks twice, wear an alternate helmet with a primary jersey, and then wear either an alternate or regular helmet with an alternate jersey, that’s fine. The total number of alternates, however a team decides to allocate them, is what is in play here.
Perhaps it’s better to phrase it that teams must wear their primary home/road uniforms a minimum of 13 weeks. They have 4 weeks to come up with any mix/match, throwback, color rush, etc that is considered an alternate.
Does that make more sense?
I went through a little phase where I didn’t think i like these unís (when they came back. When the team started play, i like them a lot), but i’ve come back around on them.
Jacksonville is a unique team (for me, and i know many will disagree) in that i believe their only misfire has been the gold to black gradient helmet, and yes it was a HUGE misfire.
Their color scheme is not terribly unique (they entere the league in the era of teal athletics), but it is a very nice color scheme that can’t really miss. They could do teal helmets, white helmets, gold helmets, or black helmets and stay on brand and look good doing it. I truly believe all of their uniforms were nice looking and thought the military style patch they incorporated on the chest for a while was a cool element (and predated the panthers switching to a military style patch look). I really like what they are wearing now (every combo looks nice) but this throwback has more personality, which is something they’ve been lacking in recent unis. I say giving this more time in the spotlight is a good thing.
I would agree that they managed to create a really good colors scheme. Teal, gold, and black all contrast well with each other. Using teal for the jersey and black for the helmet, the gold accents just pop incredibly well in there. I think the throwback is a really good uniform, but not great. I think what alters our perception of it is how well it uses the gold trim, and for whatever reason all the other Jags uniforms have mostly ditched the gold trim. By comparison the throwback ends up looking so much better because everything else is missing that critical gold trim element.
The key is the shade of teal; to echo a post a few weeks ago, it’s a blue green rather than a green blue. And the Jags’ biggest mistake was removing the contrasting gold, which is why the unis pop the way they do. Of all the 90’s tealists–the Marlins, the Pistons, the Magic, the Panthers, the Sharks, the Hornets, the Grizzlies, the Diamondbacks [man, there were a lot!]–it was the Jags, and maybe the Hornets, who got it right.
The hornets definitely got it right. They started the teal and/or purple fad for Pete’s sake.
They should try a teal helmet and ditch the white. It would be a unique and uncommon look.
I think a teal helmet is a great idea and it’s an idea only one team can have. I personally think the dolphins should be the ones to do it, though. If they did an (aqua) helmet with a single white stripe and the dolphins script with an orange drip shadow, I think they’d look fantastic.
100% agree that a teal helmet would be a great look for either team though.
I haven’t loved alot of Nike redesigns, but man, I love the older uniforms on Nike’s modern template. Many of these uniforms looked old and outdated on, say, the Reebok template (in my humble opinion), but the modern features of the Nike template mixed with the throwback designs makes for a perfect mix.
Couldn’t agree more.
The classic unis with the teal-flaked helmet from 2009-2012 would be the dream uni combo for me.
I know there are plenty of people who would prefer sticking with the original black helmet, but I really liked that effect on those 2009 helmets, and would live to see them paired with a uni that doesn’t suck.
I still like the originals (with block numerals) better, but these are the second-best uniforms the Jags have ever used, so elevating them to primary status would be welcome.
I doubt anyone will miss the white helmets.
With a maximum of 4 wears, how would that pan out if they wanted to do a white “throwback”? We’ve seen the Miami do this. Also, I want the Bucs to wear a white throwback with creamsicle pants!!!! Seahawks throwbacks look fantastic with natural sunlight. Would love to see those stay as a primary!
Man, still hate the regulations on alternates. So silly that if they wear these 4 times they can’t use the white helmet. Just give teams freedom. Was really hoping to see the white helmet with the white jersey and every pant option.
Wonderful news, really love these uniforms (the stripes on the pants are so good) and hope they will be primary one day, but now concentrate on winning games. Jacksonville deserves a succesful football team. I am not a Jags fan (I root for Big Blue), but I want to see them in a Super Bowl and win, just to prove that smaller market teams also deserve to be champions.
General uniform question here – why are these Prowler’s so beloved while the 49ers uniforms from the aughts is hated? They’re both basically team colors with black/white/gold trim. I know the Niners weren’t necessarily killing it record-wise in those unis but it’s hard to understand anyone saying they didn’t look amazing, to me anyway.
Lots of people mention part of it is the shade of red changing; I’d be more than happy to keep the current shade of red while adding some of the details and trim and accents back in. Heck, keep the unis as they are now but just get rid of the gray face mask, it looks so cheap and amateur on a team with no gray in their scheme.
The Jaguars might not have commissioned white and black versions of the Prowler jerseys soon enough to abandon their current uniforms this year, so that could be a reason. Just a guess.
