Good Monday morning, Uni Watchers. I hope everyone had a good weekend and a nice Mother’s Day.
ICYMI, over the weekend, Anthony posted a really fun think piece on the “City” (Edition, Connect, Rivalry) uni-trend Nike is on the past few years. Definitely check that out if you didn’t see it previously.
After finally, and officially, unveiling their 2025 City Connect uniforms last week, the Arizona Diamondbacks debuted the new unis on Friday evening against the Dodgers. Then, because they liked them so much, they wore them again the whole weekend.
As with any unveiling, I wanted to see the uniforms under the lights and in action before rendering a final judgment. There were also a few details that weren’t totally clear after the unveiling, and those also became clear once the team began play.
The focus of the uniforms, of course, is on those components most likely to sell at retail — the caps and jerseys — and those indeed looked good. The purple and teal complement each other quite well, and fortunately even up close, the snakeskin gradient pattern in the jersey wasn’t really noticeable. I never felt the dark purple set-in sleeves particularly made the jersey look “sleeveless,” but even as someone who’s not overly fond of contrasting color sleeves, I thought it looked pretty solid.

I’m surprised (and pleasantly so) the D-backs kept the “Serpientes” wordmark for the jersey, and it just shows how difficult it is to actually put “Diamondbacks” as a full wordmark across the chest. Another pleasant surprise was how well the thick diamond pattern forming “pinstripes” looked both up close and from a distance.
Most players who wore full or three-quarter length sleeves wore teal. I definitely liked that, though it did have the effect of mitigating the teal stripe of the sleeves.

You can see out of focus in the background of the above photo a player (Josh Naylor) wearing really high cuffs to expose CC socks. Most players, perhaps unsurprisingly, wore their pants at full length. The CC socks are busy, but actually mostly appear teal from a distance.

A couple players broke out the Mother’s Day pink gear early, and I’ll let you be the judge of how purple, teal and two shades of pink mix.

As noted at the top, there were a couple things we hadn’t seen (or seen well) at the unveiling. We never saw a helmet, and we hadn’t really gotten a good look at the back of the jersey, nor had we gotten a particularly good look at the striping pattern on the pants.
Fortunately, the helmets were a high gloss that were in the exact same style as the caps. They even eschewed using a raised rubber “S” for a helmet logo.

We knew NOB would be in teal, but we never got a good look at the number fonts. Turns out they were the thinner style we had seen in an earlier leak, and not the thicker ones from a different leak.

The pants striping — as you may have been able to see from some of the above pics — actually has an intricate pattern. At the unveiling, the pattern was only momentarily visible (I managed to grab a screen cap from their hype video). From that shot, it looks like the pattern is a teal stripe with purple diamonds within. And that’s indeed the pattern, but the purple diamonds are quite thick and close together at the waist, but get progressively thinner and further apart at the stripe reaches the hem.

It becomes noticeably more apparent the closer up one gets.

How did they look in action?

Unfortunately, the lighting isn’t great inside the stadium (even with the roof open), so the unis were sometimes seen in shadow. But when considering them strictly as uniforms (and discounting the merch dump that is the entire raison d’être for the CCs) I thought they looked quite good. Despite being the hot colors of the 1990s, when paired well with each other, purple and teal complement rather than clash.

So, readers? What do you think? I’d say, especially now that I’ve seen them in action, these are my favorite CC so far this year. And with the exceptions of Chicago and Miami, I’d also say the 2025 crop of CCs has been pretty good so far. It would have been hard to top the White Sox’ and Marlins’ original CCs regardless, so those two are clearly downgrades. But the other five have all been pretty solid, and in almost all cases, either a push or an upgrade from their previous set. Where do you think Los Serpientes fall?
We still have one final CC uniform to be unveiled — the Red Sox. I should be speaking with a team rep about them later this week, and it’s my understanding the team won’t officially unveil them until 3:30 pm on Friday, May 16th (and will debut them later that evening). I’ll confirm those dates and times as we get closer, but I should receive the embargoed press kit prior and if the official unveiling is confirmed, will have a post ready to go as soon as the embargo is lifted. I’d say the Sox have the potential to be the best CC of 2025 if they nail the cap and pants.
This definitely isn’t one of the worst city connects out there. It’s nice to see the D-Backs back in purple and teal. The one correction this uniform needs is to get rid of the black sleeves and make it purple like the rest of the jersey.
The sleeves are actually purple. Dark purple, to be sure, but purple nonetheless.

Such a beautiful photo
Correct Dom, the Bucs in their one year style only uniforms.
The scoreboard was from this past Friday night in Chicago, when media reports and interviews with his brother proved the newly-elected Pope Leo XIV to be a life-long White Sox fan.
The White Sox need a fan who is a servant to the poor, broken and downtrodden. A fitting description of the White Sox last year.

Kind of have that Charlotte Hornets vibe to them. OOOOOPS! Don’t give Nike any ideas LOL I actually like them. That teal is REALLY bright under the lights!
I don’t know why teams like the DBacks and the Marlins strayed away from their most popular looks. This city connect brings back the teams original colors, colors I’d argue the fans much rather prefer than their current set. Same for the Marlins when they brought back their original teal jerseys last year all you would hear is That they should wear those unis full time.
The D-Backs changed to red and black partly due to colour matching. Purple and teal are two of the hardest colours to keep consistent across different materials, and due to HD, inconsistancies in the shades of the two colours was getting more noticable.
Now that the technology has improved and you can get a consistent shade across materials, Los Crótalos should go back to purple, teal, copper and black.
I think they look great, even with the double pink accessories – either would work as a third colour in this palette. I prefer a darker teal for the Diamondbacks, but for this uniform I think the lighter shade works better.
They aren’t awful, but as always, still a few too many unnecessary gimmicks with Nike. Just a purple jersey, with diamonded pinstripes would work. The gradient and contrasting sleeves look bad. The throwback colors are still easily recognizable as the Diamondbacks.
This. Overdesigned by half. There’s a lot to love, but the overall look is one that as a fan, I would be bummed about, simply because it’s a great idea trapped in a generally weak uni.
HOWEVER, I will say that Nike could get away with a lot more of their design gimmicks if the unis looked like good quality materials and good craftsmanship. That all of these unis look cheap and slapdash really hurts my ability to appreciate the design.
Overall, D-backs CC program introduced us to the hat should be the basis of their visual identity. Keep the name diamondbacks, but be the team with the quirk of the uni not bearing that name. Serpientes is much cooler and the wordmark is an absolute home run as is the simple S logo and the trianglular valley logo. Also serpientes doesn’t easily turn into D-bags. They should embrace a pale khaki based uni, and the return of the bright color palette.
I was hoping to like them more, but the black and the dark sleeves took too much away from the purple.
needs to be their full time color way again. current colors are forgettable
I’d have to respectfully disagree. The red and teal is pretty unique
They’re not that unique, the Marlins have Esther same color scheme.
Is there another Marlins team I’m not aware of? Because Miami’s red is very pink and their blue is just that, blue (not teal).
im sorry but the marlins unis and color combos looking nothing like the dbacks
thats a huuuuge stretch
Although I really dislike the CC program, Arizona has done very well with both CC1 and CC2. The only dislike is the sleeves. A solid jersey would be an improvement over the pinstripes but not a deal breaker. In my opinion, both sets of CCs would perhaps be in the top 5 of all CCs to date!
They look wonderful. Purple, teal and copper is the best colour combo Mescaline can buy, and the various shades of purple and teal Los Crótalos have used for their CC look beautiful.
Now it’s possible to get everything to match shade wise, the D-Backs should go back to purple, teal, copper and black as their colours, as they not only are SW AF, copper (state mineral of Arizona) forms teal and black compounds when it oxidizes.
One of the few cases where the CC should be their regular uniforms. Would love to see white and gray versions based off the same template.
Man these looked really good on the field. Definitely a top 5 CC set. I really like the current unis and branding (teal and red, nice combo of the new and old colors) but seeing these and the reception they got make me think in the near future the team may return to a purple and teal set full time.
Ketel Marie looking like a Trapper Keeper I had in junior high.
These looked quite good. The dark sleeves are kind of pointless but it works and it feels like a Dbacks uni.
I would just like to see then replace the red in their regular set with purple. The design of their uniforms isn’t the problem, it’s the resistance to return to the color combination that seems to be what the fans want.
I did like the sand & black CC uniforms prior to this, but I admit I’ll probably end up liking these better because of the colors.
*Diamondbacks fan since day one, my first jersey doesn’t have a name or number because it predates the expansion draft.

If they want to wear a vest, they should wear a vest. Not a t-shirt that is made to look like a vest.
And it doesn’t even look like a vest.
Thanks Phil
Would have been a top 3 if not for the stupid ad patch.
Round 1 desert tan was way better. No need to change.
These are totally unnecessary and kiddie trash.
They look like a 13 y.o. club team.
I like it, they even get away with the gradient in the jersey. But the previous CC set was slightly better, I think.
