Cryptic Tweet Raises Speculation About New Atlanta Falcons Uniforms

Posted in:

Good Thursday morning, Uni Watchers.

This has been one of the “quietest” weeks, in terms of big uniform news, in quite some time. With the NFL Draft beginning this evening, is that about to change?

Traditionally, teams who undergo a full uniform redesign do so before the NFL Draft, as they will want their draft pick(s) to hold up whatever primary home jersey the team will be wearing for the cameras, as well as to sell new merch for the upcoming season. But so far, not a single team has announced a redesign for 2025. While there has been some speculation about a couple teams getting updated uniforms for the fall, nothing has proven to be more than rumor and postulation.

But is that about to change?

Most likely not. However, at yesterday’s Atlanta Falcons’ pre-draft media gallery, a question was asked whether the Falcons would be getting new uniforms in 2025, and David Bassity, the team’s Vice President of Football Communications, replied, “We’ll see.” ESPN’s Marc Raimondi tweeted Bassity’s reply, which set off speculation that the Falcons might indeed be getting new uniforms.

While the response “We’ll see” is far from affirmative confirmation of a set of new uniforms, the replies, perhaps predictably, not only were overwhelmingly positive (“It’s about time,” “They’re T5 worst in league. Throwbacks T5 best,” and “Make it happen!”), fans weren’t shy in letting it be known their preference for new uniforms.

You get the idea.

First off, if no team has unveiled a new uni set at this late date (the day of the draft, no less), it’s highly doubtful any team will be undergoing a redesign for the 2025 season. So I feel confident in saying we won’t be seeing any wholesale redesigns for any team this season. That’s not to say there won’t be uniform changes — but teams unveiling a new alternate/throwback while keeping their primary uniforms almost always do so after the draft. We’re likely to see those, plus any teams introducing new pants options, in the weeks following. And with all teams permitted to add a third helmet shell for 2025, we can probably expect a bunch of those as well. New helmets are generally unveiled over the summer months.

Two teams rumored to get new uniforms for 2025 were the Washington Commanders and the Atlanta Falcons. While the Commanders are only entering year four (of the mandatory five-year “rule”), it was believed the NFL would grant them an exemption to the five-year rule, as the team has undergone an ownership change, from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris. Harris has made no secret he loves the uniforms worn by the franchise during their multiple Super Bowl appearances with players such as Joe Theismann and John Riggins. And the Falcons were rumored to be moving their throwback uniforms to their primary homes, while creating a new white throwback to serve as the primary aways (along with either a new third uniform, or a redesignation of their current primary to alternate status). But it appears neither of those will come to fruition.

The Falcons were one of six teams who got new uniforms in 2020. That does make them eligible to redesign again for this year, but if they haven’t announced it, it’s highly unlikely they — or any other team — will be doing so. If no team fully redesigns for this year, it will mark the first time since the 2010s with no full redesigns. Again, that’s not to say there won’t be new uniforms, jerseys, pants and/or helmets introduced this upcoming season, just no major overhauls.

I’m very surprised no teams have announced new uniforms for 2025 — and there are certainly more than a few teams who could use a redesign. And unless there is some breaking news on that front before tonight’s draft, it looks like we’ll have to wait to find out the upcoming uniform changes and additions. Thus far, the only major uniform news has come from the Titans (definitely one of the teams who needed a redesign years ago), but instead of scrapping their current awful template, they’re simply redesignating their light blue jersey as their primary (and moving the navy jersey to the alternate), and ditching their Tennessee Oilers throwbacks after two ill-fated seasons.

As always, we’ll be watching the draft tonight (and cyberspace today) to see if anything on that front changes. I don’t expect it, but as they say, “Never say never.”

Your thoughts?

Guess the Game from the Scoreboard

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Tyler Nixon.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

Guess the Game from the Uniform

Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Austin Kincaid.

Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.

And finally...

…that’s going to do it for the morning lede.

I’ll have a couple more articles to follow, and should there be any breaking uni news, I’ll tackle that ASAP as well.

Everyone have a good Thursday and enjoy the NFL Draft (hopefully your team gets their preferred player!) and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow morning.

Peace,

PH

If the Commanders don’t change their uniforms this year, it would be such a massive improvement if they add stripes to their pants and pair the gold pants (with stripes) with the home uniforms.

Jaguars, Falcons, Commanders, and Titans all need to go back to their uniforms they wore in the 80s/90s (except the helmet logos for Commanders and Titans).

Yellow facemasks for Washington would help a lot. And getting rid of those stupid ass Florida State knockoff white unis with the mismatching black for whatever reason

    “They know what we want.”

To look generic and only slightly indistinguishable from the Tampa bay buccs? I’m sorry, I understand the current set may not be for everybody, but they ditched the ombré and frankly they aren’t bad at all in my opinion, mostly because they aren’t doing anything weird. It’s a simple look with small things that make it different from the techmo Super Bowl palette swap sprite look that so many teams use and so many fans seem to want. There’s the rub, though. Fans want a generic jersey. But guess why? Success is the best deodorant. If the dirty birds were any good in these current unis, I bet people would chill on wanting the 1970s high school uniforms back. Just like Seattle ain’t giving up their current look because their best years came AFTER their best look.

The current set looks like build-a-franchise custom team mode in Madden. I’m sorry, but where do you get “looks like Tampa Bay”?

“We’ll see” is such a Dad way of saying “Rats, you figured out the surprise”.
Anyone who has ever even ridden in a car with a kid knows if they see Disneyland etc. and ask “Are we going to Disneyland?!!!” You don’t say “We’ll see” if you’re planning on driving past. Although it would be totally On Brand for the Falcons to get their fans hopes up just to immediately let them down.
But I remember in 2020 the Falcons got skewered online for their re-design, (with even the Panthers tweeting about how bad they were) so maybe they’re shy about a huge unveil this time.
If I were a Betting Man I would lean towards thinking that there won’t be new uniforms, but I COULD envision a scenario where they re-designate their alts as the Home unis, with that news coming when they hand their 1st pick the throwback. Then they’ll unveil the white version afterward. Or maybe they hand him the new white jersey.
Either way, the more I think about it, unveiling your new jersey on your First Round pick is a pretty cool way for people to see it!

I mean, my dad is absolutely the type of person to go “We’ll see” and then actually drive right past Disney World but yes, the Falcons would have just said “No” if they weren’t tweaking something.
Assuming they’re redesignating the throwback as the primary, I’m curious how they’ll address the helmets, since they can only wear alternate shells 4 times. Will they go to the red shell as the primary? Making the away uniform a bizarre franken-throwback? Or will they just slap a throwback logo on the black helmet, like they did from 2016-2021?

    GTGFTS
    26 Sep 1998
    Busch Stadium
Penultimate day of the 1998 MLB season
Sometime after the bottom of the 7th inning.
The Giants/Rockies scoreline is inaccurate-the Giants scored 5 in the third inning, not the fourth, off Darryl Kile.
Expos get their final win of the season, 7-6.

The Falcons wought to go 1980s uniforms with 1990s helmet. Black over red would like great.

I was surprised to learn that the Falcons have had their current set for five years already. They might be the most blah unis in sports, no impact whatsoever. I never understand why franchises won’t just listen to their fans and give them what they want since there’s such a clear preference among fans for the classic look.

GTGFTU: Thursday October 12, 2023: Game 4 NLDS Phillies 3 Braves 1. I wasn’t there but watched every pitch on TV.

I’ve never quite understood the Falcons uniforms hate. They’re far from my favorite, but in a vacuum they really don’t seem that awful. Their biggest sin seems to be the oversized ATL, and just being somewhat bland.

The gradient uniform was a big miss, and they seem to have recognized that and haven’t worn them since 2022. The earlier years seemed to rely too heavily on mono-color/leotard looks, but it feels like they’ve started to move away from that as well. Black-over-white, or white-over-black (w/ contrasting socks, of course) is in my opinion a pretty decent look.

Of course, the throwbacks would be preferred. Something about that red helmet is just excellent. But, are these current ones an improvement over the ones they replaced? I think that is a resounding ‘yes.’

They are indeed an improvement over the previous set but they are still absolutely horrible compared to the beautiful unis the Falcons had in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Both the original black and then the subsequent red jerseys were excellent.

IIRC, didn’t the Rams unveil their new uniforms after the 2020 draft?

I know that 2020 was a weird year, but it’s still something.

Titans uniforms aren’t bad at all. People just hate to hate. Cardinals do need an update to the home. Give the pants and shoulders some stripes and wear different colored pant/jersey. Chargers need a dark helmet. Commanders need to go back to Redskins. More teams need to go color vs color.

I like the Titans and Falcons current uniforms. They are good but not great that.
As for the Chargers. This is a team that needs an update. They look a bit dated.

Chargers just updated a couple years back. And this set is a classic.
Titans and Falcons might be the 2 worst sets in the league.
This feels like ragebait, my guy.

I cant recall where exactly I saw this concept but the main gist of it was that almost any of the combinations of jerseys, pants, and socks could be interpreted as throwbacks to any of the three previous eras of Falcons uniforms, and I would love for the falcons to do this concept for their new uniforms.

1st time in a long time that no team made an update. Was to the point that is was expected annually.

Refreshing, despite some teams really in need of a change.

Take Georgia’s Home/Away kit and slap on the Atlanta Bird.

    Done. Uniform redesigned.

as a falcons fan this is what i want:
-current falcons logo to not change. it’s perfect.
-slap it on the throwback set to create the primary home uniform of red helmet, black shirt, white pants
-white jersey with red numbers outlined in black, black cuffs and collar. everything else the same
-no red or black alternate pants ever.
-red alternate jersey that is exactly like the white away but with the red and white swapped.
-shiny black alternate helmet like we used to have with black facemask. no more matte, no more gray cage.
-circa 1998 ‘dirty birds’ sets as the new throwbacks.

We’ve seen a lot of basball teams go to a modernized “classic style” uniform lately – Minnesota, San Diego, Arizona, Milwaukee, Houston, Cleveland – but nique enough in most cases that they’re easily identifiable.

I would love to see the NFL trend in this direction. Arizona, Atlanta, Miami, Tennessee, Denver, Washington, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, the LA Rams and Seattle all would be improved if they wore slightly modernized versions of their 1960s or 1070s uniforms. And Dallas and Pittsburgh should take a page out of the Colts playbook and revert back tom the classic number styles that they wore in the 70s. There is something to be said for finding a good look and maintaining some consistency over the years.

Atlanta should go back to the 1970’s 1980’s red helmet, red jersey with silver pants and the 1990’s black/black/silver as an alternate.

If Nike could make metallic pants, I would agree. But they can’t, so you’re asking the Falcons to wear dull gray pants. It wouldn’t be terrible but they are one of many teams being held back because Nike’s textiles are cheeks.
