Google Doodle Honors NBA Playoffs

Posted in:

Yesterday marked the first day of the NBA Playoffs, and the omnipresent search engine Google got into the festivities with a logo (a “Google Doodle,” in Googlespeak) with each letter rendered in a different NBA team’s font. The logo is  also a .gif, so it changes. The fonts depicted for each letter are as follows:

First G – Magic, Clippers, Timberwolves

First O – Grizzlies, Rockets, Nuggets

Second O – Celtics, Pistons, Thunder

Second G – Knicks, Warriors, Bucks

L – Lakers, Celtics, Pacers

E – Cavs, Heat, Clippers

Each playoff team’s font is depicted at least once, with the Celtics and Clippers featuring twice.

Say what you will about Google the company (I probably agree with you), I think this is pretty cool.

And that’s all I got for today. Everyone at Uni Watch wishes you a Happy Easter if you celebrate, and a Happy Sunday if you do not. Phil will be back tomorrow. Peace.

Very impressive win for the Wolves last night. I fear the NBA won’t allow the Lakers to lose the series, though.

Saw a bit of the Grizzlies/Mavs Play-in game. Considering the huge potential lost with the Canucks this year, I was happy to see a “Vancouver” team win to qualify for the playoffs.

I understand the NBA situation with the multiple uniforms. Can we keep that in the regular season? I would like to see them make a decision to just go with a single home uni and road uni during a playoff run. Uniforms that look like the team identity. The Pistons/Knicks game last night is what I am talking about.

Totally agree. NHL has been surprisingly good at this, making teams stick with their regular uniforms (or in rare instances, adopt an alternate as their playoff look).

Problem is that all the extra attention that comes with the playoffs is seen as an opportunity to display and sell more merch.

I noticed the “Vancouver” on the Grizzlies unis and was surprised. Here they are in a postseason game, presumably needing fan support and they go for the cynical money-grubbing fallbacks, with no mention of Memphis on their costumes. I’m all in favor of teams recognizing their histories, but this seemed inappropriate given the circumstances.

So, wait, Google is using an “O” to represent the Denver Nuggets, even though that’s not a letter that appears in any of their word marks? I’m confused…

If I can get thru the day’s Uni-watch without confusing a photo link on a new page (which I close after viewing) with a pop up photo on the story I’m reading (which I close by mistake) then my brain is working!

As if they couldn’t find a team that actually had that letter on their jersey to use for the GOOGLE Doodle. Smh

Too bad they couldn’t do it for the NHL Playoffs. 10x more interesting/exciting than the NBA.

I wondered why google was so ugly last night.
NBA is a terrible premadonna show. NHL playoffs are far superior. Should have done NHL.

You can keep typing “premadonna” but that doesn’t make it correct. Do better.

Nice concept. Reminds me of the ransom note uniforms of the Heat a couple of seasons ago.
