Orange You Glad: Orioles Debut New Mono-Orange Uni Set

[A programming note: We are saddened to announce that editor Phil Hecken’s mother died yesterday. Our thoughts are with him as he deals with this difficult time. We’ll do our best to keep the site running smoothly in his absence. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding. — The Uni Watch Team]

The Orioles, who announced back in March that they’d be adding orange pants to go with their orange alternate jersey, wore that uni combo for the first time on Saturday, when they hosted the Blue Jays.

As you can see above in the shot of centerfielder Cedric Mullins, the mono-orange look is, well, very orange. Here are some additional images, followed by a few video clips:

It probably will not surprise you to hear that I don’t much care for mono-orange baseball uniforms. But it might surprise you to learn that I quite liked how this uniform looked on the field alongside Toronto’s powder-blues. The two monochromatic unis made for a pleasing color matchup that I wouldn’t mind seeing again. And since these two teams are in the same division, there’s a decent chance that could happen. Here’s hoping!

My first reaction was: noooooo, no mono orange! But the matchup with the powder Blue Jays looked nice indeed. Onwards, with the mono red Guardians against the powder blue Royals!

Not sure I’d like these all the time, but that’s a good looking game.

More importantly – condolences to Phil and his family. I hope you’re all taking care.

But mono and pyjama look is still a horrible combination, at a second look. Hoist up those pants!

This matchup looks great in photos, but I think you need a good TV to appreciate it. My TV tends to oversaturate and darken colours, so both colours looked significantly darker than they’re supposed to be.

Glorious. These would be even better with the white front hats to lighten the whole thing up a bit. The pj pants are particularly inferior to high cuffs in this situation. Hate to be that guy but honestly with that image of the blue jay wearing pink accessories and so many teams rocking the powder blues it took me a good long minute to figure out who they were playing (I know, look at the score bug. I say it all the time but with city connects and the proliferation of the PBFPBS throwing in those pink accessories make me question everything I knew)

I agree here, Baltimore’s orange set could benefit from some white blocking, even if the black hat is more historically and ornithologically accurate.

I love orange but would typically hate this as I am a white vs gray traditionalist. However, for some reason the all orange works well. Orange and yellow for some reason seem to work for me in baseball (as long as there is a contrasting darker hat). Can’t really explain why. This looks especially good paired against the Jays’ baby blue uniforms (orange and baby blue being my favorite colors definitely helps).
I think if paired against gray it wouldn’t look as good as the baby blue contrasts better than a dull gray. I’d vote for this to always be the matchup when Baltimore and Toronto play in Camden Yards.

My condolences to Phil and his family. Regarding the match. Very nice. At this point, Toronto should seriously consider getting rid of the grays and sticking to the powder Blues as a permanent ROAD JERSEY and not at home. The Os in full orange look good. But not always.

Toronto using light blues as their main road set would be amazing. They’re the perfect team to do it.

It would be funny, though, when they played somewhere like KC that also has light blue (road) throwbacks as home alternates. A home team’s at-home throwback to their old blue roadies would presumably cause the road team to wear their alternates (softball tops or CC) instead of their main blue roads.

I’m an Orioles fan and can live with these as an occasional thing. Proper hosiery (black stirrups over white sanis?) would make them more attractive.

Yep and I used to think the only appropriate place to see pajamas in public was when it was a younger girl wearing them to Walmart…
Now you got grown men not only wearing them on baseball fields but I saw a dude at AutoZone wearing them…

I’m 46. Both of my grandfathers were those old dudes who wore suit pants & a button-up over a white A-shirt every single day if their lives, and couldn’t understand how/why a grown man would wear jeans (which were for children) out in public.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode:
“You know the message you’re sending out to the world with these sweatpants? You’re telling the world, ‘I give up. I can’t compete in normal society. I’m miserable, so I might as well be comfortable.”
Every time I see an adult man in sweatpants at any location besides the gym I think of this quote. I extended on it a little and tell my teenage and pre-teen nieces that any guy wearing sweatpants out is a loser you should avoid. I think that rule has prequalified 95% of teenage boys as losers.

The mono orange look is a fun look but would get really old if it starts to be overdone. I equate this somewhat to the mix and match looks that Pittsburgh trotted out a few times last year–there are a lot of baseball games, it’s good to mix it up from time to time…especially when it isn’t a merch dump.

One of the only mono-anything uniforms I wouldn’t mind seeing once in a while.

I’m less opposed to mono-color sets in baseball than football, though. Since baseball teams have mostly gone mono-color (white or grey) for most of the sport’s history, it feels less jarring to see a different color used the same way.

My sincerest condolences to Phil, who’s done great work with this site!

I think the orange shirt would be fine with white pants (and orange stirrup socks) but I just can’t get on board with monochrome. It reminds me of the late 70s O’s for some reason, though I’m not sure they wore mono-orange back then.

I’m not a fan of this look, but I think it’s fun if it’s done sparingly. The main issue is that these players need to go high cuffed with black socks. It’s too much orange, but with high cuffed black socks, it’s such a better look.

My heart goes out to and your family, Phil. May you find solace with your loved ones in your grief.

Agreed, the all-orange is too much for me…though I think it would look decidedly less obnoxious with some proper stirrups and/or hosiery. The pajamas make it that much worse.

Condolences and sympathies to Phil and his family.

I’ve actually done this matchup a good amount on MLB the Show and didn’t think there was anyway I’d see it in real life. I love it!

Also, I’d love to see teams mix and match a lot more. The Reds for example. I think their new white alternate top looks REALLY good with the black pants. Throw on the black cap with the red bill and I think it’s their best look.

Best wishes to Phil as well.

In the first embedded video, Orioles pitcher #74 is right-handed but the logo faces forward–not the advertisement. As much as I despise advertisements, I doubly despise how ads are always forward, because it ruins uniformity. It’s the minority approach when a team says “ad is always on (pick the) sleeve, end.” To my knowledge, the Blue Jays and Rangers do it that way. Are the Orioles a third team where ads don’t move? Or is this a fluke on one player?

I believe this is a fluke, and the Rangers unfortunately switch the sleeves as well as of this season. By far my least favorite part of the jersey ads, as switching sleeves defeats the purpose of a “uniform”.

Man, this. I understand why sleeve advertisements exist. But the fact they alternate sides based on player handedness drives me f’n nuts.

Condolences Phil during this difficult time.

No a fan of monochrome but I liked the O’s oranges, liked it a lot. Great shade of orange.

    Sympathies to Phil.

Anyone else think that baseball game looks like Lloyd and Harry’s tuxedos in Dumb and Dumber? Almost the exact same colors!

    link

Ewww! Not a fan but would be ok with wearing them once a month, with the white front cap. The road cap gives it too dark of a look. If they continue with the road cap, I had soon not see them again!

It’s good to read something here again from you, Paul. I just wish it was under happier circumstances.

I know you and the rest of the UW staff will step up in a big way while Phil is taking some much-needed time away.

Color-vs-color, birds-vs-birds, springtime baseball. Love to see it.

I’d take a little more white on Baltimore’s set. The 1971 jerseys and the 2010 throwbacks had much thicker, black-and-white sleeve stripes. Without being too costume-y, those mimicked the stripe on an oriole’s wings, and looked really distinctive on the uniform.

I’d love to see Toronto wear their light blues on the road whenever possible, but this match-up in particular looked great outdoors on a chilly, drizzly day in Baltimore in the springtime.

Sympathies and condolences to Phil. The All-orange is a bit too orange. I see an orange bomb popsicle. Hike up the slacks and show some black.
