Navy Lacrosse Unveils “Jolly Roger” Inspired Uniforms

The United States Naval Academy has unveiled a set of new uniforms which they’ll wear when they host the Army West Point Black Knights this Saturday at 12:30 pm.

While it’s not quite as big a game as the annual one the two teams play in football every December, it’ll share one thing in common: the lacrosse uniforms will continue the “Jolly Roger” theme introduced last fall.

Not only did the football team don those “Jolly Rogers” uniforms for the Army-Navy game, the Navy baseball team unveiled very similarly designed uniforms back in early March.

So the new lacrosse uniforms will continue the theme.

As of this writing, the team hadn’t released any still photos of the uniforms, but they did produce a hype video showing them off.

Like the football and baseball uniforms, the lacrosse uniform is white, with navy and gold accents, and the white chevrons on the gold/navy/gold stripe is the common design element for all three unis. The football and baseball teams’ uniforms honored Fighter Squadron 17, also known as the “Jolly Rogers.” The squadron used the skull and crossbones insignia, in part because they flew F4U-1 Corsairs, and corsair is an old nautical term for pirate.

Here are some screen grabs from that video, showing off some of the uniform’s features.

As you can see, the white jersey sports a “NAVY” wordmark and uniform number in navy blue. Around the hems are the classic stripes with chevrons. Those stripes also appear on the sides of the shorts.

Like the football team, players will wear special patches on the jersey.

The jersey’s blue yoke also features the Navy’s Skull and Crossbones logo on the sleeve. The logo is also found on the sides of the teams helmets.

I liked both the football and baseball teams wearing the Jolly Roger-themed uniforms, and I like these as well. In fact, if Navy were to make these uniforms permanent (for any of the three teams), I’d be in favor. I happen to like it when schools share common design themes across different sports.

What do you think of the new lax uni? And do you like the “across all sports” theme, or do you prefer it when schools have distinctly different uni designs for different disciplines?

As a lifelong Navy athletics fan (I live less than an hour from the Naval Academy), I must say… pretty cool!!

As for your question about the across all sports identity, I’m kind of in the middle. I like this idea, and I think it’s awesome. I also like when schools have different themes. For instance, I think it’s cool that Tennessee uses the light blue for ladies sports.

    A. I love the uniforms. The looked great for the football team and the baseball team and I think they’ve nailed it again.

    B. It’s interesting to see the in-between setup they had for the reveal. They’re wearing helmets and gloves, but not the rest of the pads. The goalie is not wearing a goalie helmet (Or more accurately, he doesn’t have the throat protector installed) and I’m 90% sure he’s not wearing goalie gloves.
