2025 American League West Division Uniform Preview

Welcome to the 2025 MLB Uniform Preview series for the American League West.

This will be part of a much larger 2025 MLB Uniform Preview which will include not only all the uniform news and updates for all 30 teams, but it will also include the multitude of changes which have taken place to uniforms overall. While Nike has addressed a good number of issues raised after last season’s disastrous debut of their new uniform template and material, a few issues won’t be addressed until after the 2025 season concludes. Other big uniform news — like the return to teams wearing their regular uniforms in the All-Star game — will all be included in the full MLB Preview, which will be released on Thursday, MLB’s true Opening Day.

__________

The American League West consists of the Athletics (as they will be known for their stay in Sacramento), Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, and Texas Rangers. Two teams in this division will have major uniform news for the 2025 season.

Athletics

If you haven’t been following baseball, the (former) Oakland Athletics have temporarily relocated to Sacramento, playing in a minor league ballpark for the next three seasons, before relocating to Las Vegas in 2028 and will play in a new 33,000-seat ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip — or at least that’s the plan. But for now the A’s are in Sacramento and will officially be known simply as the “Athletics.”

Despite the transition to a new city and ballpark, the Athletics appear to putting in great effort to upgrade the field to MLB standards. The team will even have replacement grass nearby and at the ready when the sod will inevitably begin to deteriorate this spring with regular play from both the Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco Giants’ Triple-A team) and the newcomer Athletics. That’s right, not only will the A’s be playing in a minor league park for the next three years, they’ll be sharing the facilities with the host Triple A team (and unless the Cats find a new home, this will be for three years as well).

But there is some good news, uniform-wise, for the currently orhpaned A’s. First, MLB spared the Athletics the indignity of a City Connect uniform (under the rationale that the A’s don’t really have a city to “connect” to for the time being). Last year — their final season in Oakland — the A’s wore home whites and road grays as their primary uniform. But they also had one alternate jersey — a kelly green top which read “Oakland” in script.

So last season the A’s were at 3 + 0 in their “4 + 1” uniform protocol. One might think the team would simply keep the old uniforms (obviously stripping “Oakland” off the green and gray jerseys) for 2025. And they are indeed wearing white home and road gray uniforms in Sacramento, and both the road and green jerseys will now say “Athletics” instead of any city identifier.

The above graphic shows how the new road jersey will appear this season.

The above graphic shows the new kelly green jersey for 2025 (the team wore them for Spring Training games).

But instead of stopping there, in another exclusive I noted the Athletics would reintroduce their gold alternate jersey — the gold jersey hadn’t been worn since 2018. The team then unveiled the new gold jerseys shortly thereafter.

The new gold jersey will complete the Core Four limit.

The sleeves of the A’s jerseys will look much different this season. In the offseason, the great Rickey Henderson passed away, and the A’s announced they will wear a memorial patch for 2025.

The Athletics are also planning to wear a large Sacramento patch for at least this season.

And more recently, the A’s have found a jersey advertiser that just happens to be the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority — and the A’s will wear the LVCVA’s “Las Vegas” logo on their sleeve.

We have still yet to see how all these patches will co-exist on the teams sleeves (although one would figure “Las Vegas” will be the sole occupant on whichever jersey sleeve it’s placed).

In order to make room on the sleeves for all of the above, the Athletics have removed the elephant patch, which had in one form or another been worn as a sleeve patch since 1988.

Finally, and as mentioned above, the A’s will be wearing a “24” (Rickey Henderson) memorial patch for the 2025 season. But they’re turning things up a notch, too: for their home opener, every A’s player will wear uniform No. 24 as a tribute to Henderson’s contributions to the A’s and MLB.

__________

Houston Astros

Big uniform news for the Astros, but it doesn’t have to do with their Core Four. For that, the team will continue wearing their home white and road gray uniforms (as seen above in 2024). To complete their Core Four, the Astros will still wear their orange alternate and navy alternate jerseys in 2025. Both jerseys were worn home and road.

The big news, therefore, must be that the Houston Astros have a new City Connect uniform. And indeed they do, mercifully retiring their “Space City” City Connect the team has worn for three seasons. The new City Connect still revolves around space, but it’s a massive upgrade over their former CCs.

The new CC also features a new cap…

…and is full of storytelling.

The team will wear their new City Connect uniforms for the first time on Monday, March 31, 2025 against the San Francisco Giants. After that first wear, they will be worn on “Space City Monday” home games throughout the season, as in years past. In addition, the team will play a “City Connect Weekend,” April 11-13, where the Astros will wear the new uniform all weekend long.

_________

Los Angeles Angels

Pop quiz: Did the Angels fill up their “4 + 1” uniform protocol last season? Even casual uniform observers are aware the Angels have the home white and road gray uniforms (seen above from 2024), as well as the their seemingly ubiquitous alternate red jersey. But do you recall when last year Paul broke the news that the Angels would also be adding a new, wishbone-collar pullover throwback in 2024?

The Angels wore these uniforms for just over a week — straight — beginning on July 25 and ending on August 1, last season. If you happened not to be paying attention to baseball, you probably didn’t even realize the Angels had throwbacks. But they did.

So the Angels last season actually met their Core Four maximum. My source has informed me these uniforms remain in the style guide, so it is expected they will wear them again in 2025, though nothing has been announced thus far.

And of course, the Angels also wore their sand-colored City Connect uniforms in 2024 as well. They were worn somewhat sparingly (less than a dozen times) but are also still listed in the style guide. Since the Angels aren’t slated to get a new CC this season, they will likely be worn again this season.

_________

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners are one of two teams (the Tampa Bay Rays are the other) that wears a solid color dark jersey with gray pants as their primary road uniform (both seen above in 2024). A couple years ago, the Mariners did actually have a gray road jersey, but it became a victim of the Core Four uniform restriction. The team also has a Northwest green alternate jersey as well as a cream color uniform, which features throwback royal and gold accents.

The Mariners also have a City Connect uniform (introduced in 2023, so they have at least one more season of use) which is polarizing — folks seem to either love or hate it.

The Mariners wore their CCs on home Fridays in 2024, and it is expected they will continue to do again in 2025.

There is one bit of fun news that’s not uni related as well. This year “natural” rivals Seattle and San Diego will play for the Eddie Vedder cup, a nice way to create enthusiasm for the teams’ annual meetings and it’s for a good cause to boot.

Finally, one bit of unfortunate uni news. After being one of the last MLB holdouts, the Mariners will have a jersey sleeve advertiser for the forseeable future. The jersey ad for the Northwest green jersey (if it isn’t changed) is perhaps the most obtrusive sleeve ad in baseball.

The announced ad on the white jersey (linked above) isn’t much better.

_________

Texas Rangers

There were no announced uniform changes for the Rangers in 2025, and their home white and road gray uniforms (seen above in 2024) will remain their primaries. Filling out the Core Four are the Rangers royal blue jersey, as well as a full powder blue alternate that the team wears at home.

And to round the “4 + 1” protocol out, the Rangers will again wear their City Connect uniforms this season. Like the Mariners, the Rangers got their CCs in 2023, so they’ll be around for at least this season.

The Rangers made some unfortunate uniform news recently, and in this instance it probably wasn’t their fault. It seems the geniuses at New Era, who have created what they call their “Overlap” collection (fan gear), ended up spelling out the Spanish word for a part of the female anatomy. It cause so much commotion, it was pulled from the online store (as later would other teams’ caps). Sigh. Click on that link to see the banned cap.

__________

Finally, here’s an infographic created by Susan Freeman showing the AL West uniforms (cap, jersey, pants) by their official colors. The top line shows cap colors, middle is the jersey, and bottom is the pants. If the pants have a stripe, that is included as well. All “4 + 1” (Core Four plus City Connect) are shown.

You can use this explainer to see the specific breakdown of the cap/jersey/pants.

This article will be updated as any additional uniform news for AL West teams occurs.

If the Athletics actually played in Las Vegas right now, that would be perhaps the most forgivable advertising patch of them all. The city’s name, in (just about) the team’s main color, and not even large or obtrusive.

Always preferred them in red, but at least they are sticking with one instead of both. One year only they did red at home with the old Rangers font and blue on the road and that was fine

A’s have beautiful uniforms! The gold is very nice!

Texas looks better with the TEXAS uniform than the script Rangers. The CC is awful!

Astros are so-so! Would like to see the orange cap occasionally! For a CC the new set is a huge improvement over the previous version, though the Stros is somewhat lame!

Mariners are also so-so! I would prefer the team use the Northwest green more often and emphasis it has much as the navy. I am not a fan of the throwback as I prefer teams use the current colors. The M’s CCs are to me the worst in baseball.

i hate the m’s cc too but i’d still have to put the rays, tigers and blue jays as the bottom 3. blue jays is the worst in my opinion

“…for their home opener, every A’s player will wear uniform No. 24 as a tribute to Henderson’s contributions to the A’s and MLB.”

Bud Selig’s Worst Idea is snowballing.

I just spent the better part of last night/this morning defending the usefulness of numbers on another thread, but if they’re going to keep putting the same numbers on every player, what’s the point? Just ditch them and slap a giant ad on the back like the Bad News Bears. That’s the direction Manfred League Baseball is going anyway, so there’s no sense fighting it anymore.

I just hope that no one ever wears their Nike Cash Grab Connect jerseys on these special number days. If that happens, you can’t tell which player is which or what teams are playing.

The only day when every team wears 42 is April 15th, and for those games, MLB pretty much requires all teams to wear their primary home and road uniforms. So no CCs. The A’s will almost assuredly wear their white jerseys and pants, and even with their CC, no one is mistaking the Pirates for any other MLB team regardless of whether they wear a CC or not.

So long as the A’s only do this once (and I’m pretty sure it’s only for this year), it’s fine. They should not make it a regular annual thing. Rickey was a great ballplayer, but he doesn’t hold a candle to the trailblazing of Jackie and the humanitarian feats of Clemente.

I may be mis-remembering, but didn’t Cleveland once petition MLB to allow them to have everyone wear No. 14 (for Larry Doby) and were denied? Obviously MLB has since changed their stance on this…

I don’t know if the ballclub petitioned MLB, but a number of Cleveland fans are very adamant about wanting Mr. Doby to get the Jackie/Roberto treatment.

Mariners might want to look at pairing the cream pants with the CC jersey. I think it might work well. I like the CC Jersey. Hate the BFBS Pants.

Yes. Sub out the navy one for grey one. Never get rid of the cream ones with blue and yellow. Those are great.

The mariners navy blue jersey to me scream batting practice or spring training. The CC’s are hideous. But I think that’s because of the black pants. As mentioned, if they paired the jersey with ANY other colored pants… blue, yellow, cream, white… would be fine. I can’t wait for the redesign. As for the ad patch, did it have to be so big and red? Like, a white square with the Nintendo logo wouldn’t look nearly as bad. I mean, I personally associate Nintendo with Griffey baseball… missed opportunity to honor that connection with a purple SNES throwback tie in, that would actually mesh well with Seattles color scheme (and look amazing on the northwest green jerseys)

The Rangers will begin having the advert patch switch sleeves depending upon the handedness of the batter.

Did the Mariners ever wear white pants with their CC’s last year? It would look miles better than wearing those tuxedo pants.

Next time you put all the logos of the AL West in an article picture please arrange as follows: A’sSHAT

Heh. As I mentioned to someone else (may have been in a different thread), I did seriously consider that.
