Texas Tech Baseball Unveils Mahomes-branded Uniforms

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have once again paired up with alum (and NFL star) Patrick Mahomes, this time introducing a new special alternate uniform. You may recall Mahomes and adidas debuted a new gray-based uniform, which were dubbed the “Mahomes Galvanized” uniforms. That was followed up by another Mahomes/adidas uniform, this time in all white.

While Patrick Mahomes is of course best known for his NFL exploits, baseball also played a big part in his life. His father (Pat Mahomes) pitched for several MLB teams, including my New York Mets, and during his tenure with the Amazins, young Patrick would be on the diamond with his pop often, sometimes shagging flies with Pat Sr. (or Mike Hampton). His dad wore No. 23 with the Mets, and the Quarterback has even worn his dad’s old Mets jersey during pressers.

Patrick himself played football, baseball, and basketball, and believes that training in pitching and playing basketball improved his quarterback skills. So, his partnering with Tech to design a baseball uniform isn’t just another venture … Mahomes baseball talents nearly rivaled those of his football prowess.

Following the football squad’s lead, the Red Raiders baseball team have now unveiled their own Mahomes-branded uniforms, which they will sport in a primetime matchup against TCU on March 21.

As you can see, the cap and jersey are both black, and those will be paired with white pants to complete the outfit.

The jersey sports a new “Tech” script (in “Mahomes signature font”), in red, with both thin white and thicker gray outlines. Mahomes’ personal logo appears on the upper right chest. Front numbers are white with a silver/gray outline, and are located on the left side of the jersey, just below the wordmark.

Sleeve stripes are red and a silver/white, located just above the hems. It’s a tad difficult to tell, but it appears as though there is some reflective material in the white outlines on the wordmark.

It’s also difficult to tell, but it appears the jersey — while featuring a button front style — is buttonless. Whether they are sewn shut or perhaps closed by use of velcro I cannot tell (however, if you watch the video below, the bottons may actually be present, but fasten inside the placket, rather than through it). Regardless, the wordmark doesn’t respect the placket, so in this sense it fits with almost every other button front jersey. I’m not a fan of pullovers, but I’m not sure this is much better. Here’s a screenshot from the video where you can see two buttons at the top of the inside placket.

The team/adidas/Mahomes have also created a special pair of pants to wear with the new cap and jersey. They are white, with a red/silver-gray/black stripe that runs the full length of the pants.

___________

College baseball teams, particularly the larger baseball programs, often have multiple alternate jerseys and uniforms, so I’m fine with this. And even though the team is known as the “Red Raiders,” black is part of their color scheme, so this isn’t a BFBS uniform. I’d have preferred this collab to feature a red (or white) jersey in the same style — indeed, those may even be forthcoming. It would have been interesting to see the team roll out a pair of matching black pants to complete the look (with rare exceptions, I do not like the “softball” look that colored jerseys over white pants convey), but in this case, I don’t mind the black/black/white style.

Mahomes was a two-sport star at Texas Tech, and his baseball bonafides are well established, so I’m also fine with Mahomes having a hand in the design process.

Your thoughts?

Fan of Mahomes the amazing athlete but not of his adidas PH subbrand so far. This jersey looks clunky to me, especially the wordmark.

Also a fan of Mahomes the QB. Not a fan of this…creation.

“… the wordmark doesn’t respect the placket, so in this sense it fits with almost every other button front jersey. I’m not a fan of pullovers, but I’m not sure this is much better.”

If this total and complete disRespect of The Placket doesn’t make you a fan of pullovers, I don’t know what will.

This. Ugh – The PM Gladiator Logo is ridiculous; especially for an athlete that IMHO opposing defenders cannot come within two feet of without getting penalized.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I HATE the idea of one player being bigger than the team, particularly when it comes to college sports. And I totally agree with Benjamin M. about how ridiculous the logo is, especially for Mahomes.
