Good Tuesday morning, Uni Watchers. I hope you guys had a good Monday.
I’m back again this fine day with the one and only Leo Strawn, Jr. Last week, Leo turned his attention to the frozen water sport, with an awesome look at real old time hockey, and this week he’s back for more. I think you’re going to enjoy this one a lot.
And now, here’s Leo with…

I’m Leo…welcome to my world!
More vintage uniforms from the rinks…
This is a photo of the 1929-30 New York Americans and Ottawa Senators. Another great shot of the gray beneath the ice.
Here is one more pic that plainly shows the gray floor. The Montreal Maroons are taking on the Chicago Black Hawks in 1929 in this one. I love the caps on the Maroons skater and netminder.
In 1930, the Pirates moved to Philly and played a single season as the Quakers.
Haven’t posted a pic of the Bruins yet. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t show the sweaters very well, but here they are in 1930 prior to a game against the Maroons.
Ottawa was very stripey in this team photo.
The cover of this “programme” from the 1934 Stanley Cup “Play-down” has some nice artwork featuring both Montreal squads. The game advertised on the front was game 1 of a two-game semi-final series between Chicago and the Maroons, which was played at the Forum.
Toronto fans in 1934 saw the Leafs wear this St. Paddy’s day sweater. NHL Uniform Database doesn’t show this one, so hopefully they’ll see this or perhaps someone can alert the site. If the info I have on this is correct, this jersey was worn by King Clancy in a 3-2 victory over the Rangers at the Maple Leaf Gardens.
This is a wire photo showing the helmets for the Chicago goalies which debuted on November 7, 1935. On the right is Clem Loughlin, “manager” of the Hawks, who is sporting a jacket featuring the Canadian flag of that era and the image of an American flag (sort of), pictured as an odd, 9-star swallow-tail.
The St. Louis Eagles (formerly Ottawa Senators) played for a single season before they permanently stopped skating prior to the beginning of play in 1935-36, leaving these eight clubs.
Before the start of the 1938-39 season, the Maroons ceased operations, never returning to the ice, reducing the league to seven clubs.
A few years later, the Americans suspended operations due to World War II, also never to return, ushering in the “Original Six” era.
These photos feature Bruins sweaters from the 1930s and 1940s. Check out the placement of the captain’s “C” on the sweater featured on the magazine cover.
I’ll end this edition with a look at the Black Hawks in stripes from 1950-51.

On the horizon, hockey goes west, young man.
Until then…
Cheers!

Thanks, Leo — this was another awesome one. I’m not sure why, but I’m a total sucker for old time hockey pics! Looking forward to whatever next week has in store (gotta think we turn back the clock to 1967 tho…).
Readers? What say you?
Uniform Concepts and Tweaks
Time for more Uni Tweaks from the UW readership.
I hope you guys like this feature and will want to continue to submit your concepts and tweaks to me. If you do, Shoot me an E-mail (Phil (dot) Hecken (at) gmail (dot) com).

Today’s concepts come from Ian Lee.
Good evening, Phil!
I finally finalized concepts I made for the Golden State Valkyries WNBA team. Like some others I saw, I was very underwhelmed by the GSV jerseys. I wanted to fix this, so I did. I mainly just changed the look of the sides to be more unique and added a lot more of the third gold color in. I also changed the away/”Heroine” jersey from white to lavender, since lavender is a bright enough color to work as an “away” or “change” kit.

OK readers (and concepters). If you have some tweaks or concepts, shoot ’em my way with a brief description of your creation and I’ll run ’em here.
Guess the Game from the Scoreboard
Guess The Game…
…From The Scoreboard
Today’s scoreboard comes from Mike Anderson.
The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).
Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):
Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.
Guess the Game from the Uniform
Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.
Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.
Today’s GTGFTU comes from Jim Schuyler.
Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.
And finally...
…that’ll do it for the early lede. As always, mega-plus-thanks to Mr. Strawn for another fine Leo’s World!
I should have another couple articles this morning, including another of Mike Chamernik’s ever-popular Question of the Week. I’ll also be away for a few hours late morning/early afternoon as one of our local networks will be doing another feature on my Curling Club, so I’ll get a few ends in while they do their thing. It’s one of those opportunities for us to showcase our sport just one year from the next Olympics, encourage viewers to come try it, and — most importantly — get us that much closer to dedicated ice. Then it’s back home to the uni beat, lol.
Everyone have a great Tuesday and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow morning.
Can anyone confirm what the font is on the “Free NHL Team Shields” poster is?
Looks like Gill Sans MT or Century Gothic to me, in bold for the team names.
Thanks, Dave! I just think that lavender is too good of a color not to use, and I was disappointed that they went with white—especially since just about everything about their jerseys was already so plain.
I am ready for team identities of the distaff variety. “Valkyries” is taken, but I’m looking forward to the “Mermaids”. Unfortunately, for the time being, “Amazons” is off the table owing to a certain billionaire.

In a situation similar to the St. Louis Browns and Cardinals, most people don’t realize that the Forum was NOT built for the Canadiens, but for the Maroons. Canadiens moved in as tenants two years after it opened, because their Mount Royal Arena didn’t have a refrigeration plant to make an indoor ice surface.
And like the Cardinals, their success overshadowed their landlords; by 1935, the company that owned the Forum owned all or part of both franchises. The Maroons franchise folded in 1938, leaving Canadiens as the sole occupant.
Wonderful stuff from Leo. I love that Captain C between the digits with the Bruins. Those Valkyries uniforms are not bad at all, too bad about the WNBA wearing soccer style sponsoring.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I agree, the W’s whoring out of their uniforms hurts my heart to see, but I wanted to try and make them as accurate as possible. If I was in charge, I’d look for new revenue streams, too. But, seeing as that won’t happen any time soon, here we are.

Glad you enjoyed.

Bills keep the Fins winless with a 31-21 victory. Micah Hyde returns an onside kick for a touchdown.

Awesome colorization work, Leo!!
