Spring Training First Look Roundup – American League

[Editor’s Note: Today we have our own Susan Freeman, long-time reader, contributor, and new Ticker Assistant, bringing us our first look at the caps and uniforms from Spring Training. Please welcome her aboard! — PH]

We have a quick roundup of available shots of uniforms as players started reporting to Spring Training last week.  As we have seen, small name fonts appear to be gone and rear number size has been restored.  Of the placket splits found, it seems they are in the same place as last year so it looks like no change was done to that aspect.  Let’s start off with the American League.

__________

AL East

New York Yankees

The Yankees are not wearing Spring Training caps – just solid navy with navy Spring Training jerseys and white pinstripes.  A look at the boys in action.  An interesting crotch shot on those pinstripes…

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles so far are sporting home whites and also the orange alt jerseys.  Full shot of the front of the home whites (photo above).  Front of orange jerseys in this view. You can kind of see the back of the orange jersey here.  This video also has some orange jersey action along with the front and back of the white jersey.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are wearing red alt jerseys and road gray pants.  Front of the jersey can be seen here.  Full view of a bat swing here.  Still shots of Crochet in action. Nice video includes front and back views and some shenanigans.

Tampa Bay Rays

Bright colors are shining in Tampa Bay.  The Rays started out with the baby blue alts and gray pants.  You can see the back of a few of the jerseys in this shot.

Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto is wearing their blue alts with white pants.  Full front view of the Blue Jays.  Back view can be seen behind Max.

__________

AL Central

Cleveland Guardians

The Guardians are wearing their new road alternate with road gray pants.  Here is a closeup view of the jersey front.  And a full look at the front.

Kansas City Royals

The Royals are wearing powder blue alts with white pants.  A few jersey backs are seen in this photo.  There are a few glimpses in the video of them in action.

Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are wearing what I believe to be navy practice tops and home white pants.  Full-length photo here.  Here you can see the back of the Hernandez jersey in the background.  Action shot here.

Minnesota Twins

The Twins are wearing their navy alts with those beautiful striped pins.  Another view of the front.  Nice shot of the jersey backVideo of unis in action.

Chicago White Sox

Black alts for the White Sox with road grays.  Caught a view of the back of the jersey from a video.  More views of the full front in action.

__________

AL West

Houston Astros

The Astros are wearing tequila sunrise-trimmed blue alts with home whites.  Another partial view of the front that has better color.  Back view here and also in action.

Seattle Mariners

No sign of any jerseys yet for the Mariners.  But there is a sign of cricket

Texas Rangers

Blue team for the Rangers with their blue alts and road gray pants.  Couple of jersey backs visible here.  Comparing front placket splits verifies they look identical to 2024.  Good video of lots of uni action.  And some video of deGrom in action.

Athletics

The Athletics are sporting the green alts and road gray pants.  A side-by-side comparison of the placket split confirms it is the same as 2024.  The back of the jersey can be seen in this video.  Video of unis in action.

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels are wearing the red alts with road gray pants.  You can see the back of the jersey hanging in the background.  Here is the front of the white jersey.  Good action video showing both sides of the unis.

__________
And that is it for the American League.  National League is tomorrow.

They need to remove the MLB logo off the back of the jerseys. Now that its below the head spoon it’s too bunched up with NOB. Bothers the heck out of me. On a brighter note. At least the small name font is gone.

New Coke playbook.: making you accept change from sugar to HFCS (awful cut) by messing with the taste (font size) and changing it back.

Agree. Look how bad (and how low) the name “Bradford” appears on the back of the Texas jersey.

That silly logo shoving everything downward looks so bad, particularly with teams that have bigger/more complex NOB and number fonts, like Texas. Dump the logo (or fit it into the placket, but preferably dump it), and move the NOB and number back where they belong!

I know I’m just yelling at clouds here, but how many MLB logos do we need on the back side of a full MLB uniform? MLB logo on the back of the hat and helmet, another in that new stupid location below the headspoon, and another on the back belt tunnel. We get it, we know it’s a MLB uniform.
And the Mariners look like an off brand original 90’s Florida Marlins uniform, minus the pinstripes.

The corrected font size looks so much better that I almost can’t enjoy it because I remember how awful the small size was and get mad!

A lot of those hats would look great in regular game action. Particular the Jays and Twins

I’d love to see a lot of these hats in regular season games. I really like that White Sox one as well.

I love the powder blue KC jersey and cap, but it does seem that a team named the Royals should have Royal Blue

There’s a famous Tommy Lasorda audio quote about Steve Garvey and that he’d make “…a f-ing great f-ing cricket player”.

If a cricket bat helps the Mariners hit better this year, go for it.

It might just be because I don’t watch much Grapefruit League action, but do the Red Sox go NOB for only Spring Training or is this a new thing for the regular season as well?

The Red Sox have never used NOBs on their home jerseys.
Roads only started adding that in 1990.
As far as I know, the alts do also have NOBs (minus City Connect 1, but I don’t believe CC2 will have that either).
Therefore it’s not anything you missed, it’s just that the no-NOB thing only exists on Boston’s home uniforms.

There is a Reddit post where someone was able to obtain a 2025 team issued Rays jersey and observed the names are larger than those on the 2024 jerseys but are still slightly smaller than they were pre-2024: link

I didn’t realize most of the league doesn’t even have a “proper” ST/BP jersey anymore except for a handful like the Yankees and Tigers. Seems like most teams just pick an alternate jersey and designate it their practice jersey. Wow. When did that happen? Also, man.. some of those hat/jersey combos are horrendously mismatched. Terrible.

I want to assume it happened when Nike took over the uniform production and implemented the “4+1” protocol. The dedicated jerseys for spring training and batting practice were also discontinued, making me wonder if this was a cost cutting measure (and if sales of batting practice tops when Majestic still produced the uniforms were too low to justify continuing production)

Credit to Kansas City with that amazing powder blue! I also like the bold, thick numbers on the back.

Thank you for only reporting on the uniforms and (with rare exception) not opining on them.

For people who don’t need to “Get it.”

Thank you, Susan. While baseball is among my least favorite sports I appreciate your contribution!

Hard to see on the Red Sox photos, but the Mass Mutual ad patch has changed. Last year it just said Mass Mutual and that was it. This year it says Mass Mutual and their big, honkin’ 5-white-circle logo above it.
