Women’s Lacrosse League Uniform Breakdown
by Jared Buccola

Hey Uni-verse, we heard you loud and clear and are happy to bring you a breakdown of the Women’s Lacrosse League (WLL). In November of 2024, the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) announced that they will be launching a Women’s Lacrosse League. The four teams consist of the California PalmsBoston GuardMaryland Charm, and New York Charging. I appreciate that there is a connection between the overall branding of the respective men’s and women’s teams. The women’s games are following the same Sixes format as the Championship Series and are streaming on ESPN+.

Let’s dive in to the inaugural teams of the Women’s Lacrosse League.

__________
CALIFORNIA PALMS

The Palms start us off with a unique color scheme of green, yellow and pink. The logo is a shield, with a gradient background, a rising/or setting sun outline and crossed palm trees. On the mono-white uniform, these colors really pop and are accented nicely by the sublimated palm fronds on the sleeves. Subtle details include gradient stripes on both the sleeves and the skort, which is accompanied by an awesome secondary logo. The goalies get the cherry on top with these magnificent helmets, complete with more gradient and palm fronds.

__________
BOSTON GUARD

Keeping true to Boston, the guard are wearing red, white and blue. Their logo is a pentagon, with the team’s word mark and a colonial man on horseback. The mono-blue uniform has a red/white sleeve stripe and red pinstripes that fade as they go up the jersey. I’m a huge fan of matte lacrosse helmets, and the Guard do it well. The logo fits the space nicely and the red chin and white mask provide some welcome contrast.

__________
MARYLAND CHARM

There’s details all over this Maryland Charm uniform. The color scheme is undeniably Maryland. The logo is a circle, with the team’s wordmark, a snake wrapped around an anchor and rope accents. The aforementioned details include a subtle snakeskin pattern, and rope stripes on both the sleeves. The team’s logo provides some contracts on the chrome red helmet, which is accented nicely by the Maryland flag stripes.

__________
NEW YORK CHARGING

New York arrives with their familiar electric and navy blue color scheme. The logo is a shield, with a lightning bolt notch at the top. Accompanying the word mark is a charging bull with a lightning bolt tail and horns. Thick zig zagging stripes are angled across the sleeves and a lightning bolt stripe jolts down the side of the skort. A metallic silver helmet houses the charging bull logo, backed by a light blue bolt and navy blue lightning bolt stripes down the crown. Shocking, I know…

And there you have it. The inaugural teams of the WLL. You can catch both WLL and PLL Championship Series games on ESPN+, now through Monday, Feb 17th

Not bad, although I’m not a big fan of singular team names, which 3 of the 4 teams have.
Similar to the current 4 Nations hockey tournament, it looks like they could go without a 2nd uni for each of these teams…I wonder if that was intentional or if alternates will be released later.

Agreed with the singular names. Palms is definitely the best. Charging is definitely the worst! From what I’ve seen, both the men’s in the Championship Series, and the women’s in the WLL, they just have one uni. I’m not sure if the WLL will have a regular season like the men do, but i’d assume if they do, they’d get home and away jerseys then

I wish them all the success–we need WAY more exposure for women’s sports. But dear goodness that “New York Charging” brand is TERRIBLE. I don’t mind the color scheme but the name is next level, forcing an action verb into a noun, and the logo itself looks worse than a video game customization logo option.

I think it’s time to bring Women’s Lacrosse into the 21st century. Lose the skirts, and for the love of God, make them wear helmets and gloves! It’s ludicrous that their only protection are wire goggle frames.
Successful womens sports leagues focus on the sport, not the fact that they’re women.

Then you should be happy that this league has helmets with all of them with hyperlinks in the text in the piece

Currently, only the goalies wear helmets. The players in the field usually wear protective wire goggles or some of the older grandfathered in players wear no face protection at all if that’s their preference, although I don’t know if this new WLL is allowing that

I knew a few women lax players who were very anti-helmet (though it’s admittedly been a few years.) The logic was that in women’s lax you are not supposed to hit the other player at all, so the protection should only be against accidental contact. Players tend to be very cognizant of not hitting each other, and some people feel that wearing helmets would result in sloppier play.

I don’t know enough to have a strong opinion, but that is definitely something I’ve heard many times.

Oh! And Cascade actually does make a helmet for women’s lacrosse. Most players still just rock the goggles, but it is available if they want it.

Agreed! I played in college and we always did a promotional game against the women. I also am an admin for a coed pick up group in Arizona. Every girl I have ever played with is more then down to suit up and throw some checks!

The Atlanta Bravely … the Baltimore Ravenous … the San Antonio Spurious …. the Utah Mammoth … wait …

I find it odd that two of the four teams have a male character for their logo (man on horse, charging bull). I don’t think that women’s teams need specifically female names and mascots, but seems they could have done something more gender neutral.
