NFL Concepts and Tweaks (NFC West Edition)
by Greg Seher

Some uniform basics that are league wide:

1. I’d get rid of the free for all of alternate uniforms. Go with standard dark home and white away uniforms (aside from hot weather white at home exceptions). I’d give each team a dark and white throwback option, and all teams wear throwbacks once a year on Thanksgiving. For a few teams I’d give them fauxback exceptions instead of true throwbacks when needed.

2. The large college style chest wordmarks don’t look right, but I do like the small wordmarks below the collar, these are being added to all the teams.

3. No logos on the back collar of jerseys, that’s a bad trend, if you want to put a maker’s mark somewhere maybe put it there.

NFC West

ARIZONA CARDINALS

I changed it up to something simple and traditional, using their stripe pattern from their St Louis years’ white jersey, with a custom number font. Their white throwback is just going back to the design used in 1996 with the Arizona flag. The dark throwback is a modification of the 1925 championship season, to meet modern uniform specs, sort of like what they did for the 75th season throwbacks.

__________
LOS ANGELES RAMS

I like their navy and gold design from the St Louis days, but think the bright blue and yellow works better than navy and gold, so swap the colors and I think it’s a great look. The 1951 championship season yellow throwback with navy helmet is a good alternate look, as well as the 1960s white horn design.

__________
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Mostly just switching the the red facemask and brining back stripes to the socks. For the throwbacks, using the fauxback design they have now, but since the design it was based on in 1955 had a plain red helmet, using a plain gold helmet instead.

__________
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Ditching the all navy look, going with the gray pants with both dark and light jerseys. Thought the logo and uniform could focus more on the bright green a little more. I’m not a fan of all the weird stripes they’ve got going on the chest, and especially not the word mark on side instead of the center, asymmetry in uniforms drives me nuts. So cut out all weird stripes, and go with a more traditional look, since their classic look was classic for a reason. The alternates an obvious choice to throwback to the classic blue and silver design from the 1980s and 1990s, and then using their 2013 championship season design.

Thanks, I mean fixing the Cardinals is not a terribly difficult assignment, just sort of shows how Nike and whoever else are doing these uniforms now are just trying way too hard to make something unique and special when classic design elements always make for a better uniform.

Your designs top notch. It’s football jerseys, not a fashion show. Great work. Only thing, no black sleeve stripe on Niners white alt. jersey. Niners white jersey might look mean with gold sleeve stripes, gold numbers with red borders.

Thanks. Agree, stick to the basics and you are better off than throwing new gimmicks into every design. My theory is really that teams are more interested in jersey sales than creating something that is going to stand the test of time. So throw out a trendy gimmick, could be temporarily popular, you sell additional merch as a result, and when the trend is dead in a few years just redesign again.

Re: Niners black stripes, that was what they had in 1955, was more a historical accuracy thing instead of preference for black stripes over the usual all red.

On that red/black/red sleeve stripe note on their 1955 jerseys… can anyone actually corroborate that that’s the way it looked?? I tried looking for a real picture of their white 1955 jerseys and couldn’t find anything, at least in Google images. According to GUD they actually only wore them once that season against Washington. Because I’m puzzled why the 49ers made it three red stripes when they revived them in 1994, instead red/black/red if that’s indeed what color they were.

Your Seahawks set came halfway to what I think they should do. Go with the retro colour and styling, but with the newer, aggressive bird logo in those retro colors.

Right, I think both the classic blue and green, as well as the navy and green are good combos. Stuck with the new color scheme since they’ve had more success with that, and also to make the throwback stand out more in comparison to the regular uniforms.

Love almost everything, with my favorite being Cardinals with classic look and black stripes, Thank you ! Not a big fan of logo less helmets, can do better. Only exception has been Detroit throwback, that has stood test of time. Hate the St Louis Rams logo on jerseys, look so out of place. I’ll take shoulder / sleeve horn stripes anytime.

Thank you. I think if there were still real sleeves the horns on the sleeves would be my first choice, but I think they have a hard time working and still keeping the numbers on such a small space with what is now just a shoulder cap. And I tend to like to have the sleeve logos for teams that don’t feature their primary logo on their helmets.

I like the reincorporation of the Seahawk logo on the shoulders/sleeves. I like the feathers though and would prefer they be kept. The color scheme is pretty good too. I wish the team used green on their current logo instead of gray.

The NFL would be wise to hire Greg immediately and permanently, no matter the cost. Great work on all of these. I especially liked the changing of the helmet colors for the Jags and Panthers.

Appreciate it! Though they can have me for free if it means going back to classical looking uniforms and contrasting socks!
Sad thing is there are people way better than me out there who are professionals the league could hire, and yet somehow the NFL keeps doing silly stuff with their uniforms.

For some reason, I’ve always wanted to see the Cardinals helmet with a stripe down the center. I don’t know if anyone has ever mocked this up but it’s an interesting concept.

I like the Seahawks look. The grey pants are under-rated and glad they get elevated to fulltime here. Glad you didn’t go overboard with the neon green; a little goes a long way in that regard. My only quibble is the redundant hawk logo on the shoulders.

Thanks, and yes, I typically agree with you on the redundant helmet and sleeve logo combos, but I think the Seahawks get away with it because their logo blends in the sleeve stripes.

I like most of your work but those Rams navy and gold jerseys were awful. I say that as a St. Louisan.

Thank you so much for that red face mask on the 49ers helmet. Grey face masks on teams that don’t have grey in their color scheme look super cheap and amateur to me.

Fantastic updates, the only modification I’d alter is the Seahawks by making their 82-01 uniforms their primary. Although the updates you provided to your Seahawks primaries are so nice, I like how you got rid of all the “gimmicky” stuff on the current uniform set.

The Cardinals could easily fix their uniforms. I don’t get it. The same conservative Bidwell family has owned them forever. You would think they’d go for something like this. Maybe because they have consistently been a bad team they feel that having non-traditional uniforms will create some interest. They’re wrong.

Great stuff. It’s been painfully obvious for years the Seahawks should go with their classic uniform template with theor current color scheme. It’d be a tremendous look.

Curious, do you like new Ram head logo better?
I don’t think the St Louis era logo is great, but is better than anything else they have used as a logo.

This is probably the best complete set that’s been on the site in a while. Good job!

Thanks, my goal was definitely to do a league wide approach, not just make each team look good, but make all the uniforms as distinguishable as possible from each other at first glance.
MLB is trickier since most teams have a long tradition of various combos of red with blue or navy. But the NFL can definitely manage to make each team unique looking in their uniform identity without having to change up each teams’ traditional colors. We don’t need so many navy and black heavy uniforms that become indistinguishable.

I think the Cardinals current red jerseys could benefit from having the state flag on the sleeves. I always thought that was a pretty unique idea years ago. Reducing the ARIZONA script would also be a plus like you showed on your concept. Honestly, I love the Rams current set (minus the bone unis). Only thing I would change would be the gradient colors on the blue jersey/blue pants stripe. Make the stripes on the blue pants similar to the Sol pants. And even add a set of white pants with the same stripes as the bone pants.

I actually got used to the new rams uniforms fairly quick. Personally the only change I want there is the change the gradient numbers to solid gold. I’m good with the logo that I associate with St. Louis stays gone. Cards and Seahawks are really nice.

As a Seahawks fan….. I love what you did for them. As a guy whose family are 49’er fans, I like them as well.

The Cardinals need to have the state flag on the sleeve or shoulder cap now.

    The Rams’s set looks great.

I like this set. Gigantic improvement for the Cardinals. It’s too bad they can’t toss their horrific current wardrobe right now. I’m not a fan of the dark alternate, looks too much like the 49ers. No black uniform and/or helmet, what an upgrade!

The Rams look is good, but would rather have blue pants or just use the yellow pants with the white jersey instead of white pants. I always liked the blue and white throwback.

The 49ers regular uniforms look good. I never like their alternates, just never liked the look.

Nice look for the Seahawks. I like using today’s colors for the new look and love the blue helmet. Their classic look is a good alternate, but I’m not one who suppports it as a full time look. I see that look, first thing I see is the Kingdome. Their current stadium (I still refer to it as Qwest Field regardless of whatever the current name is.), is much better.
