Philadelphia Eagles Reveal Super Bowl Jersey Choice

It was perhaps the worst-kept surprise, mooted when the Kansas City Chiefs announced they are wearing white jerseys for Super Bowl 59: the Philadelphia Eagles — the designated “home” team — will wear their midnight green jerseys for the big game.

The teams wore the same jerseys in Super Bowl 57, which was won by the Chiefs 38-35. In that game, the Eagles went with midnight green helmets and jerseys, with white pants and hosiery. The Chiefs countered with red helmets, white jerseys, red pants, and striped, white socks.

In Super Bowl 57, the Eagles went green/green/white/white against the red/white/red/white Chiefs

The Eagles announced their jersey choice with a video.

Here are a couple more shots of the Super Bowl patch being applied to the jersey:

This will be the fifth appearance in a Super Bowl for the Eagles. In all four previous games, the Eagles have worn green jerseys.

Their first appearance, way back in Super Bowl 15 (played on January 25, 1981), was against the Raiders. The silver and black would win the game 27-10.

It would be a few decades before the Eagles would again appear in a second Super Bowl. They played in SB 39 (played on February 6, 2005) against the New England Patriots. The Pats would win by a score of 24-21.

The Eagles would return to the Super Bowl — a rematch with the Patriots — for SB 52 (played on February 4, 2018). The Eagles would win their first (and so far, only) Super Bowl by defeating the Pats by a score of 41-33.

And the final Super Bowl appearance for the Eagles happened a mere two years ago. The Eagles would meet the Kansas City Chiefs — their opponents in next Sunday’s SB — for SB 57. The Chiefs won that game by a score of 38-35.

This upcoming Super Bowl will not be just a rematch between the Chiefs and Eagles, it’ll also be a uniform rematch: the two teams will wear identical uniform combinations.

Super Bowl 59 kicks off at 6:30 pm (ET) on February 9th at the Superdome in New Orleans.

The NFL should require some small uniform change (like socks?) so this game looks distinguishable from 2 years ago…

I disagree. The dome looks horrible on TV. The lighting is bad and way too many Super Bowls have this dull, boring lighting. Let’s get this thing outside or at the very least, in domes with windows.

*Technically* there is a difference: the Eagles’ chest wordmark. They changed their wordmark a few years back, but only just updated it on the uniforms this year.

I understand that’s not exactly what you mean, but still.

Super Bowl rematches that were exact uniform rematches:
Dallas/Pittsburgh – X and XII (XXX Dallas had changed socks)
    Dallas/Buffalo – XXVII and XXVIII
Philly/New England – XXXIX and LII
New York/New England – XLII and XLVI
    Philly/KC – LVII and LIX
Interesting that Philly and New England both had the same uniform 13 years later. The rest were relatively quick rematches.

Dallas/Pittsburgh wasn’t an *exact* match — in SB 10 the Steelers wore gray facemasks. By SB 13 they had changed to black cages.

Also, the Cowboys had made a couple of other changes by XXX – the number font had changed from their original version, which had additional serifs on 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9, and the shade of silver on the pants had changed from being very blue-tinged to almost green-tinged.

We don’t want them loose. We want the uniforms tight. Less grabbing. 99% of the country wants them to win, not LOSE the game.

Lot of parallels to the Buffalo-Dallas rematch. They have the same uniforms, but are playing on a much worse-looking field. Now, the Rose Bowl is a much better-looking venue than State Farm Stadium in Arizona. Still, both are substantially better than their rematch counterparts in the Georgia Dome and Superdome, respectively.

I wish the Eagles would have worn their beautiful kelly green uniforms for this Super Bowl. Would have been a work of art seeing those two uniforms on that stage. It’s a shame they didn’t. Niners did it in 1994. Looooong time ago and way different time – but it was rad.

The Niners had managed to finagle their way into making their throwbacks their de facto primaries for the rest of the 1994 season starting with Week 6, so they were able to get away with it.

I prefer the Kelly green, but this dark green color has grown on me. I do think it would look better with silver pants like in Super Bowl 15, to go with the silver wings on the helmet.

I would love to see how we (Eagles)would look if they tried out the black pants with midnight green tops..
I mean their road unis of white jerseys/black pants have really grown on me .Shit i wish theyd roll back out the black tops/ with the green pants or even black tops/white pants and hell even the all midnight green look from the early 2000s are all fire in my humble opinion.
Oh and bring back the Nike Magnigrip gloves yknow the black white black white alternating colors on the fingers. Sorry for the long post brethren. But I love the aesthetics of say the tiki barber and ray Lewis team colors gloves from super bowl 39. Give it a gander
