Important Ticker News — Ticker Assistants Wanted!

Back at the beginning of January, as part of a larger post announcing our own Anthony Emerson would be replacing Jim Vilk as new Weekend Editor, I also posed several questions about the Uni Watch News Ticker.

Many of your comments that day indicated that many read (and enjoy) the Uni Watch Ticker, which has been a part of this site since the beginning, and traces its roots back to Paul’s early ESPN columns then running on their “Page 2.” The Ticker originally appeared five days a week, and was part of the day’s larger main article; eventually, I ended up adding the Ticker to weekends.

But when Paul stepped away as Editor, we agreed we would keep the Ticker, and it has since been published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

As I noted in that early post, Anthony would be giving up his Ticker Assistant duties when he moved up to Weekend Editor, and that I believed I had a new Ticker Assistant lined up to take at least one of Anthony’s weekday Ticker duties. Unfortunately, that replacement has fallen through, leaving us with, at the moment, only one TA (Jamie Rathjen).

I read all the comments from that day’s post, and not only do many of you still read and enjoy the Ticker when it is published, a number of you would like the Ticker returned to a daily publication. Now, that sampling of comments was probably more pro-Ticker than the camp that either doesn’t read, or who will read the Ticker, but it’s not necessarily a daily (or every-other-daily) part of their UW experience. But those who would welcome a return to a five-day-a-week proposition were strongly in favor of this, and I, too, would love for the Ticker to return to daily publication.

That’s where you guys come in.

I’ll be handling Anthony’s Ticker duties for the short term (possibly even taking one permanent day), but we’re now looking to hire some new Ticker Assistants in order to publish the Ticker five days a week.

Becoming a Ticker Assistant isn’t a major commitment — but it is an important one (and it comes with a yearly stipend). Generally Ticker duties take a few hours one day a week, so it’s a great way to help bring content to our readers, and I’m hoping a few of you fine readers will step up to become TAs! In fact, if you’d be interested in handling more than one day, as Anthony did, that would be even better (and double the stipend!).

So, if you’d like to be considered please SHOOT ME AN E-MAIL (phil.hecken@gmail.com) with the subject line “Ticker Assistant.” Please indicate if you’re interested in handling one day (or more!) and what day(s) you would be available.

Even if you have a full-time job, being a Ticker Assistant won’t affect your work schedule — especially if you have access to a laptop or PC/Mac. All that’s needed is a love of uniforms and a desire to help bring uniform news to our readers.

Hopefully there will be more than a few of you who would like to join the Uni Watch team (which includes a bi-yearly stipend and a couple other perks) — especially those of you who indicated a strong desire to see the Ticker return on a full-time basis. I’m HAPPY to restore the Ticker to its rightful daily publication, but I can’t do it without you guys.

In addition to making the Ticker a five-days-a-week thing, I have also been working with our Webmaster to try to make the Ticker “more visible” on the front page of Uni Watch. One of the concerns raised in the comments has been that sometimes readers can’t “find” the Ticker (especially those who read only the Ticker), and that will be addressed in short order.

Thanks in advance to all who have shown interest in keeping the Ticker (and returing it to full-time status) — I’m counting on you to step up so we can Make The Ticker Great Again!

I, for one, would love to see the ticker return to a daily version. I would love to do it, but don’t have the time that I feel it would require for me to do it justice. Hope you are able to find some help and the Ticker is something I really look forward to on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. :)

Thanks for the feedback, Jeff! For the time being, the Ticker will still be published M, W & F (even if I have to take over both Wednesday and Friday in the short term).

If you really “would love to do it” we can make it work for you (or at least we can try) — but if you don’t think you have the time, I completely understand. If you’d like further information on what this entails, gimme a shout.

Thanks for the support and feedback :)

I am kind of tempted to do it, but I’m not sure if I have the time. Maybe you could give a breakdown of what the process is and what all it entails for people who may be interested

one reader’s opinion but i prefer less frequent tickers with more content if the alternative is a daily, shorter ticker. it feels like we’re already getting the shorter versions, so that to me is plenty vs just trying to fill it when there isn’t much day to day to fill
