George Noriega Tweaks the NFL (AFC South Edition)

Reader George Noriega has embarked on a minor redesign for all NFL teams’ current uniforms. When George reached out to me earlier, he proposed “a weekly submission of tweaks to various teams that IMO (and also based on reader feedback) would address a lot of the comments and criticisms we see every week on Monday Morning Uni Watch.” He isn’t looking to change much, but feels his tweaks would enhance the overall look for each team.

Some of George’s tweaks have already run as parts of larger lede articles (including two of today’s, but in order to keep the divisions together, they’ll also be seen here). I’ll be running George’s tweaks by Division over the next couple weeks. If you missed any past tweaks, click the following:

Today we’ll look at his proposals for the AFC South Division. Here’s George — enjoy!

AFC South Tweaks
by George Noriega

Just a quick rundown of the concept and an example of what I would be looking to do:

  • (1) For all teams, tweaks would be based off their current templates, so I’m not looking to do complete overhauls i.e. Cardinals, Commanders and Rams would keep their current templates
  • (2) Mono uniforms are OK i.e. Pats all-blue, Jets all-green, Saints all-black, etc., but also…
  • (3) No leotard/yoga pants look, regardless of whether pant stripes break the look up
  • (4) No plain white socks; socks are either contrasting color to the pants or striped

__________

Houston Texans

Home: Navy/navy/white/navy
Away: Navy/white/navy/red
Alt. 1: Navy/navy/navy/red
Alt. 2: Navy/white/white/navy
H-Town: Navy/navy/navy/navy
Color Rush: Red/red/red/red AKA The Blood Clots

Notes: If the Away uni looks familiar, it’s the same as their original away uni, which paired navy pants with red socks, a combination they would wear from 2002 until Week 9 of the 2008 season, at which point they paired the navy pants with navy socks and went with the yoga pants look from that point forward.

__________

Indianapolis Colts

Home: White/blue/white/blue striped socks
Away: White/white/white/blue striped socks
Color Rush: Black/blue/blue/blue AKA Indiana Nights set
Throwback: Circa 1956 White/blue/white/blue striped socks

Notes: The Colts have always felt like a classic grey facemask/striped socks/black cleats team, and I loved when they went to that look in 2004 in the middle of the Peyton Manning era, so now that they use that old school number font, I think we’ll return to that look again… a minor tweak as the Nike swooshes are changed from black to blue on the white jerseys and pants.

__________

Jacksonville Jaguars

Home: Black/teal/white/black
Away: Black.white/white/black
Alt. 1: Black/black/white/black
Alt. 2: NUMEROUS, see above
Throwback: Black/teal/white/black AKA Prowler

Notes: A black outline has been added to the white numbers on the teal jerseys, while a teal outline has been added to the black numbers on the white jerseys and the white numbers on the black jerseys…A Jaguars-head logo has also been added to the left and right hips on each set of pants… Jacksonville REALLY needs to make the Prowler set AKA The Mark Brunells their default uni ASAP since it is their best look and part of their most successful era as a franchise… barring that, my preference is for the Jaguars to go with the Home and Away concepts as their defaults, and then mix-and match as they deem fit.

__________

Tennessee Titans

Home: Navy/navy/white/navy
Away: Navy/white/navy/Titans blue
Alt. 1: Navy/navy/Titans blue/navy
Alt. 2: Navy/white/white/navy
Alt. 3: NUMEROUS, see above (this is not an exhaustive list)
Throwback: White/light blue/white/light blue socks with red & white stripes AKA Houston Oilers

Notes: Another team that I feel got it right the first time (when they switched from the Oilers to the Titans unis), but here we are… I struggled with the Away uni, because the original had a yoga pants looks with navy pants and socks, plus it was the look most closely associated with team legends Steve McNair and Eddie George… but we have our no-yoga-pants rule, so I’m going to go with a similar look, but with Titans blue socks, as their default Away look… I’m of the opinion that the Titans need to scrap the Oilers throwbacks and just stick with their Titans identity, of which they’ve had for 25 years already.

The Jags and Titans get a lot of flack, but these show how well the contrasting of all four elements works. For the Jags, I like the look of black/teal/black/teal, and even black/black/teal/black. Same for the Titans, navy/light blue/navy/light blue and navy/navy/light blue/navy. I know we all refer to it here, but it really makes a big visual difference and improvement when the pants and socks contrast.

“Another team that I feel got it right the first time (when they switched from the Oilers to the Titans unis), …I’m of the opinion that the Titans need to scrap the Oilers throwbacks and just stick with their Titans identity,…”
    Disagree with both statements.
The really should not have strayed from the Oilers brandin( I’m pleased they retained their hold on their history), and those throwbacks are easily one of the best around and perhaps their best all time look…some may say maybe not ‘as good’ as the 72-74 sets, but YMMV on that.
The thumbtack logo is not nearly as good as the sword, and adding navy was so unnecessary.
Nice effort tweaking their current set, but the Titans will continue to look terrible until they ditch the current chassis and embrace their Oiler heritage.

The Tennessee Titans may go down as one of the worst rebrands in sports. Tennessee Oilers is what it should be, and they have a lot of catching up to do. I don’t think anyone of importance is concerned about the lack of oil derricks in the Volunteer State.

I think there’s a way to do both, honor the Houston Oilers legacy while still keeping the Titans name.

I’m working on it and will run it by Phil once all 32 teams are done.

I’ve never liked anything about the Titans rebrand. I’ve never liked the navy. I’ve never liked the weird things they did with the shoulders. I’ve never liked the thumbtacks. More than anything, though, Titans? Could they have chosen a more generic name? “Let’s call ourselves the Tennessee Persons!” If the Memphis Grizzlies can be the Memphis Grizzlies despite there being no grizzly bears anywhere near Memphis, the Tennessee Oilers can be the Tennessee Oilers.

I love the tweaks George is doing for the more part, but this is one case where the house can’t be saved because the foundation is broken.

The Titans name is an homage to the Ancient Greek culture in Nashville, which has the moniker of the “Athens of the South”. There’s also a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in the city that was built in the late 1800s. So your claim of the Titans name choice being generic is quite invalid.

Thanks for the hard work with all these.
Does this division have the most mixable sets of jersey/pant/sock combo’s in the league? It seems like it.

Texans are fine as they are right now. I love their road uniforms the most. I would like to see the Texans do more.mixing and matching with their home uniforms like blue on red or red on blue. Add red pants as an alternate option to the white jerseys on the road like what some teams do with black pants do on the road.

Colts need to add blue pants with the white jerseys on the road.

Jags are pretty good on their combos, they could use another uni upgrade.

Titans need another new uniform set. I liked their initial 1999 set then it aged in the 2010s. The new set of uniforms never were good, but I always liked the way the navy blue and baby blue clashed. They don’t need to be the Pilers because they aren’t the Oilers.

It’s amazing how much better the Texans’ home and away sets look with red socks.

The number outline makes a HUGE difference for the Jags uniform. Ever since they were released, I thought that an outline would be a big upgrade.

With that being said, I completely agree; make the Prowler set the default!

With the AFC North coming up, I have a recommendation. What would the Ravens black pants look like if they had stripes? The white, purple, and CR pants all have triple stripes!

Nice! I’ve really been enjoying all of these tweaks. Thanks for the great work!

I kept the Color Rush options for most teams. Yup, breaks Rule 3 but there are some fans (not really here at Uni Watch) who, if team social media accounts are to be believed, actually like the Color Rush/White Out/special occasion uniforms.

love the outline you added to the numbers on the jags jerseys. they were always missing that detail, and i think it makes the numbers pop more. i dont understand why sports teams prefer this, it happens in NBA jerseys too
