Detroit Lions Tease Black Alternate for Sunday Night Finale vs. Minnesota Vikings

If last night’s tease on social media bears out, the Detroit Lions will be wearing their alternate blue helmet/black jersey for their pivotal Sunday Night Football matchup for the No. 1 seed in the NFC when they host the Minnesota Vikings.

The Lions released this on TwitterX last evening:

In addition, their TwitterX header shows the following:

Nothing is official…yet (that will come with their official uniform unveiling later this week), but the signs sure are pointing to going BFBS Sunday night.

If true, this is yet another twist on the 2024 uniform saga that has been the Detroit Lions.

I’ve written several articles on the Lions’ new uniforms and their superstitious insistence on repeating uniform combinations in which they have been victorious, shunning those in which they’ve lost. With a current record of 14-2, the team has (obviously) lost only two games all season. In Week 2, the team wore its new silver/blue/silver combo, losing to the Tampa Buccaneers at home. As a result, the team hasn’t worn that combination a second time.

The Lions’ only other loss this season came at home, against the Buffalo Bills, when the team wore its all-black alternates with alternate blue helmets.

Based on their uniform proclivities, one would think the Lions wouldn’t repeat the BFBS combo again, since they lost while wearing it (they also won while wearing it: they defeated the Seahawks wearing blue/black/black/black in Week 4).

And, uh, oh yeah. After teasing wearing throwbacks for Thanksgiving (they ultimately wore their monolulu blue unis), the Lions announced that they would, in fact, wear their throwbacks for this Sunday’s game. But now it appears the team will indeed close out the season in blue helmets and black jerseys.

But what about repeating a “losing” uniform combination? The team hasn’t done so yet, and with the difference between getting the No. 1 seed and a bye (as opposed to losing the division and playing as the No. 5 seed) at stake, one would think they wouldn’t break the protocol of not repeating a losing combo.

But what if they still wear the blue helmets and black jerseys, but instead of black pants, they pair them with their blue pants? That would create a new combination…

…one in which the team is undefeated.

The venerable GUD, which until last night had the Lions in their throwbacks for this game against the Vikings, have now listed the blue hat/black shirt for Sunday night (no pants/socks yet). This also seems to confirm the late uni switch.

So, will we finally get to see the blue/black/blue/black combination? We’ll know shortly before gametime, when the Lions will officially unveil their full uniform combination, but if I were a betting man, I’d lay excellent odds the team will break out the blue/black/blue/black.

I’m disappointed we (apparently) won’t get to see the Lions’ throwbacks this season, but I would have liked to have seen those on Thanksgiving. If the Lions do pull out the alternating blue/black combination (something I’ve been wanting to see since the team unveiled their new uniforms back in April of 2024), then I might just be OK with the team doing the BFBS thing Sunday night.

Your thoughts? And, are you hoping the team breaks out the blue pants with the black jerseys?

The ONLY way this makes sense (and would be worthwhile, IMO) is if they wear blue pants and black socks. Scrapping the throwbacks for Week 18 and wearing an all black combo that you already lost in would be a major fail. Of course, they could still do something dumb like wear blue socks with blue pants and still make it ugly, but let’s hope not…

it will be interesting to see what they wear. I know they lost in it, but silver/blue/silver and silver/white/silver are my favorite.

I don’t go on Xhitter anymore. I am still on Facebook, though (heavily curated to avoid garbage), and I follow the Lions there, so I saw them updating on this over there.

It would be nice if they wore the blue pants with the black jerseys, but I’m not holding my breath.

The blue pants would make this getup somewhat more palatable. The horrible indoor lighting at Ford Field makes the all-blacks just dreadful.

Too bad we won’t get to see the Lions’ throwback uniforms. I thought we were going to see them this week.

Black from the neck down, I am counting on it as the players and staff seem to like it so much. I think it looks horrible but I am not a player, coach or even an ardent fan of the Lions.

Kind of stupid to announce they’re wearing the throwbacks AFTER they already basically canceled wearing them on Thanksgiving then change their minds since they’re so damn supersititious.

I want to root for the Lions and I’m glad for the fans but petty stupid stuff like this makes me wish they’d lose their first playoff game.
