Previewing the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal Uniforms

The eight quarterfinalists in the College Football Playoff are all set, and playing in Bowl Games tonight and tomorrow. Here’s a look at what the teams will be wearing.

__________

Fiesta Bowl

Penn State vs. Boise State
December 31, 2014
7:30 pm (ET) — ESPN

The first of four College Football Playoff/Bowl games kicks off this evening, with No. 3 seed Boise State taking on No. 6 Penn State. The BSU Broncos have played in three Fiesta Bowls prior to tonight’s game, winning all three. Despite being the higher seed, the Broncos will wear blue/white/orange, in which they’ve been perfect in blue/white/orange.

Penn State, meanwhile, will be dressed in their normal “home” uniforms with white helmets, blue jerseys, and white pants. In Penn State’s first-round playoff game victory against Southern Methodist, the Nittany Lions elected to wear their “Generations of Greatness” uniforms.

__________

Peach Bowl

Texas vs. Arizona State
January 1, 2025
1:00 pm (ET) — ESPN

The Texas Longhorns are one of the most traditional uniform schools in the NCAA, basically having only two uniforms: white helmet/white jersey/white pants, and white/burnt orange/white. As the “road” team for the Peach Bowl, the Horns will don their traditional all-whites.

The Arizona State Sun Devils haven’t officially declared their uniforms for this game (they usually wait until shortly before the game for that), so this will be updated once they do. We know they’ll wear their dark jerseys, and in their previous two games, wore gold helmets with “Sparky” logos, which pleased the players, alums and people with eyes immensely. The expectation is they’ll continue to ride this combo for their playoff/bowl appearance against Texas.

UPDATE: As I expected, the Sun Devils will go gold/maroon/gold, with Sparky on the helmet!

__________

Rose Bowl

Ohio State vs. Oregon
January 1, 2025
5:00 pm (ET) — ESPN

As the designated road team, the Ohio State Buckeyes will wear their regular road uniforms, but with a twist. Their helmets will have a special rose stripe, which they’ve actually worn before in a previous Rose Bowl.

The No. 1 ranked and undefeated Oregon Ducks are the designated home team, and as is their wont, will be breaking out a new uniform combination for the game. In their first meeting earlier this season, the Ducks eked out a 1-point win over the Buckeyes, who’ll be looking to avenge that loss tomorrow.

__________

Sugar Bowl

Notre Dame vs. Georgia
January 1, 2025
8:45 pm (ET) — ESPN

The Fighting Irish are the designated road team for the Sugar Bowl, and they will be wearing their regular road uniforms (gold helmets, white jerseys, gold pants) for the game. There had been some chatter that the Irish might break out a special uniform for the game, but they should be in their classic road look.

Like the Irish, the Georgia Bulldogs will be in their regular home uniforms, which consist of a red helmet, red jersey and silver britches.

Untucked jerseys are unfortunately mainstream now but good gracious please wear an undershirt if you’re gonna do that!

I thought that BSU photo was a gag at first! Ha!

I don’t get Oregon wearing white pants vs yellow. Would look so much better, particularly given their yellow numbers. I don’t get the silver helmets either, but alas. They have such a great look potentially, with either green/green/yellow, or (preferably) yellow/green/yellow.

Oregon won’t repeat any combos this year (or at least, they won’t for their first 14 games). I don’t love that combo — and said as much in my article on Oregon’s uniforms. Either a gold helmet or gold pants would have been fine, and that wouldn’t have been a repeat. They couldn’t go gold/green/gold as they already wore that.

With the green jersey, here are the combos they’ve already worn (I’ll use “Y” for yellow instead of G for gold; the G here is Green):

    G/G/G
    G/G/W
    Y/G/Y

I was kind of thinking they’d go G/G/Y, since that would be perfect, school-color-wise, and it wouldn’t have been a repeat. They could also have gone Y/G/W. In fact, there are a few combos they could squeeze out that wouldn’t be repeats.

They’ve apparently scripted out every uniform (including this one), so I’d assume they have two more combos already picked, assuming they make it to the CFP final.

But at least the jersey will be green and gold — they played four games this season where not a single element was green or yellow/gold (also known as “school colors”). And one game had just the green hat, but neither the jersey nor pants had any green or yellow/gold.

I appreciate Texas, GA, PSU and ND keeping it classic. I like the subtle rose stripe from OSU. I see what Boise is doing in paying homage to the team that beat Okla. I’m surprised Adidas didn’t cook something up for AZ St. And a tad disappointed w Oregon. I love the jersey but the chrome dome doesn’t do it for me. And think they missed an opportunity to at least wear the yellow pants.

I thought the NCAA outlawed the “Zeke Elliot” midriff jersey? Appears to be a thing today.

If anyone needed a T-skirt it’s that Boise State player. If I wanted to look at a hairy gut (and I don’t) I’d just glance down. And so forth…

I’m really surprised at how good these matchups look. The worst of the lot is probably Oregon and it’s not really that bad. The chrome helmet is kind of annoying and the white pants just need some stripes. ASU looks REALLY great, probably my fave of the remaining teams.

Wow. Just what I needed to see. A fat hairy gut hanging over some ugly orange biking shorts. Sums up the state of football uniforms these days.

The Ohio State rose stripe isn’t even visible on the field. Nice idea, but doesn’t execute well at all.
