Ohio State Buckeyes Reveal Rose Bowl Uniforms with Special “Rose Stripe” Helmets

On New Year’s Day, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be taking on the Oregon Ducks in the College Football Playoff, with that game being the Rose Bowl. Although the Rose Bowl will feature two B1G teams (for the first time ever), it’ll still have an old-school feel as the Ducks formerly played in the PAC-12.

The Oregon Ducks have already revealed their Rose Bowl uniforms — a uniform that will represent their 14th different combination for the season. The Buckeyes will be a tad more traditional.

Earlier the team unveiled its uniforms. They are OSU’s usual road uniforms featuring white jerseys and gray pants.

While the road uniforms will be the same as they’ve worn all season, there is one new addition. The Buckeyes will sport a “Rose Stripe” for their helmets.

As you can see, the red center stripe of the helmet will have a rose pattern blended into the scarlet stripe that lines their traditional gray helmets. Here are some stills from the above video:

If you’re saying to yourself, “Hey, didn’t Ohio State wear that same helmet in a previous Rose Bowl?” you’re not crazy. Three years ago, the Buckeyes wore the same “Rose Stripe” helmet when they defeated the Utah Utes in a thrilling, come-from-behind 48-45 win.

Here’s how those helmets looked.

As you might have guessed, the Rose Stripe features very subtle rose designs, and are basically not visible unless they’re seen up close.

I’m not generally a fan of uniform design that won’t be visible from more than a few feet away, but I love this Rose Stripe that the Buckeyes are bringing back. It’s a nice nod to a previous bucket, and a tasteful way to acknowledge their presence at the Granddaddy of them all.

The Rose Bowl game is played on January 1, 2025, and will begin at 5:00 pm (ET). The game can be seen on ESPN.

Is it just me, or does the graphic have a player that’s NOT wearing the Rose-themed helmet at the top? Interesting given he is wearing the patch.

If you zoom in, it looks like they are. Although, if they aren’t, it wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise. They were trying to keep this secretive, so if they released this before they officially announced the Rose Stripe, they might’ve had the player wear a normal helmet.

That graphic was created before the team announced the Rose Stripe, but after the team unveiled the white jerseys with the Rose Bowl patch. So, yes, it doesn’t have the special stripe (and your eyes are better than mine!)

I hated the Buckeyes 1969 Rose Bowl uni’s, they had a fantastic design that featured NOB’s.

But owing to the warm conditions, they wore mesh white practice jerseys, but RB Jim Otis and a WR had theirs ripped away, so they ended up with the NOB versions.

A much better looking uniform than Oregon for sure. I also like the subtle rose pattern in the helmet stripe. And a big thank you Phil for posting stills of the video. I have neither the time nor the patience to watch them.

I concur with our illustrious editor, it’s a nice subtle touch to their classic helmets. It most certainly doesn’t create a hodge podge like Oregon’s mismatched mess.
