The New Orleans Saints will be wearing mono-white uniforms below the neck for tonight’s Monday Night Football tilt against the Green Bay Packers.
But it won’t be their usual road white jerseys with plain white pants. Rather, the team is bringing back a uniform combination they haven’t worn since 2023 (when it was worn once): their color rush fauxbacks, but with a gold helmet. That uniform was introduced back in 2016, when the NFL’s “mandate” for teams to wear Color Rush uniforms was in place.
That uniform pairs the Saints regular helmets with white jerseys and pants that are fauxbacks to the team’s original 1967 jerseys (which were then paired with gold pants).
The CR versions of the fauxback created a pair of white pants (with beautiful black/gold/black striping) and white socks, which strays from the 1967 look, in style if not spirit.
In 2022, when the NFL scrapped the “single shell rule,” the Saints created a new black helmet, which they began wearing with the color rush uniforms.
I’ve never liked the design of the new black helmet, and have argued the team should modify (or even replace) it going forward.
The current shade of gold on the Saints helmets, unfortunately, doesn’t match the “old gold” of the CR uniforms, but I think it still looks a lot better than the CR uniform paired with the black helmets. If only the team could get the “old gold” from the uniforms to translate to their helmet finish.
It’s not a terrible mismatch, but it’s still not quite the same shade.
I have argued the Saints could have some of the top uniforms in the league if they were to simply get new uniforms based on their throwbacks, and they could easily keep both the CR jersey and pants in so doing.
I’m a big fan of the CR jersey and pants, and if the Saints could see fit to pair it with black socks, it would look better still. That they’ll wear it in Green Bay against the Packers in their classic green and gold tonight should make for a great uni matchup! It’s a Christmas miracle!
What are your thoughts on the Saints choice of attire for tonight? Do you like the CR uniforms? Do you think they should “make them permanent” going forward, or should they stick with their current uniforms, or should they redesign new uniforms from scratch?
Love to have your thoughts.
Why do the Saints get it so consistently wrong? They should have a top 5 uniform, but instead they’re a mess. How tough can it be to go with a gold helmet, white jersey and gold pants on the road? Guess we should just be thankful we won’t see them go monoblack tonight.
I love gold helmets, which is saying something considering as a Trojan our two rivals both wear gold helmets. The Saints, along with the 49ers, have arguably the best uniforms when they wear matching gold pants. However, I also really like these Saints CR all white.
A pair of gold socks would mollify the black pants debacle.
I want to love the Saints unis so much but they keep fouling up the works. The old gold here looks like weathered brass. And part of me (the irrational part apparently) wants to see them wear gold lids, black jersey and white pants one of these days.
I like this option you mention a lot.
This is a valiant effort to look as good as they used to do back in the 70s and 80s. I like the gold helmet and this faux-back jersey and the pants, but why is it so hard to match that gold in the helmet or the other way around (the gold of the helmet in the uniform striping)? And we need black socks (maybe with some gold striping) for contrast
It’s so nice to see the Saints in a good looking uni like this. Wish it wasn’t so rare.
If they just wore the regular white or black jersey with the gold pants and black socks they would have a top 10 uniform. Also the black jersey would look better with white numbers. get rid of the ugly black stripless pants forever.
The gold in the original Saints’ uniforms had appears to have had a richer hue to them which I prefer. I also agree that pairing gold pants with gold helmets is the best look. Save the mono black for the trash heap.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah everyone!
Your article is incorrect. The Saints wore the color rush uni with the gold helmet last season in Los Angeles in a TNF matchup. Your article states it was 2021 the last time they wore that combo when it was in fact 2023…last season.
Good catch! You’re absolutely correct — I’ve made the change to the article.
Thanks!
