Boise State to Wear Traditional Combo for Fiesta Bowl vs. Penn State

The next time the Boise State University Broncos take the field for their CFP quarterfinal, it will be in the Fiesta Bowl, when they take on Penn State.

This will be the fourth appearance in the Fiesta Bowl for the Broncos, and they are undefeated (3-0) in the big game. You may recall their first appearance, back on January 1, 2007, when they arguably pulled off one of the greatest Bowl upsets in history, taking down mighty Oklahoma. It may also have been the greatest Bowl game ever played, with Boise running a variation of the Statue of Liberty play, in overtime, for a two-point conversion to win the game 43-42.

Boise State wore blue helmets, white jerseys and orange pants for this game.

Boise State would return to the Fiesta Bowl on January 4, 2010, when they played TCU. They would leave the field that day taking their second Fiesta Bowl Championship, by a score of 17-10. Here’s what they wore for that game:

On December 31, 2014, the Broncos would play in their third Fiesta Bowl, this time taking on “hometown” Arizona. They would win their third consecutive trip to Glendale, defeating the Wildcats by a score of 38-30. Their uniform combo for that game? You guessed it:

Those Bowls were played in different times, of course, and there were no national title implications for the Broncos. This time around, Boise State is hoping to win its fourth consecutive Fiesta Bowl, using it as a springboard to reach the semi-finals of the newly-expanded College Football Playoff.

So, with three wins in the Fiesta, all in blue/white/orange, the Broncos will once again don this combo as they attempt to take down Penn State.

The game will be played on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at 7:30 pm (ET), and the game can be seen on ESPN.

Boise State’s Head Coach Spencer Danielson announced the combo on the Rich Eisen Show. “I think I’ll be fired if I say we’re not going to wear that same jersey combination, so we’re going to roll with the blue-white-orange.” (Side note: yes, even coaches refer to a full uniform as a “jersey” on occasion. Sigh.)

__________

Of all their uniform combinations (and Boise State has many), my favorite has always been blue/white/orange (perhaps not coincidentally, the favorite Denver Broncos uniform is also blue/white/orange), so naturally I’m ecstatic they’re bringing this combination back for their fourth Fiesta Bowl appearance. And while Boise State’s uniform templates have usually left something to be desired over the years, their colors have always been excellent. Royal and orange is such a fantastic color combo.

I don’t know whether or not Danielson (or Broncos players and fans) are superstitious — but they certainly don’t want to mess with the success they’ve had in the Fiesta wearing blue/white/orange. The fact that it’s my favorite combo is just icing on the cake!

Your thoughts?

I wonder if Penn State will wear the “generations of greatness” again now.

The one-time they wore white shoes in a bowl game, they lost the national championship in the ’79 Sugar Bowl. That’s why, aside from aesthetic and “branding” I’m not happy about white shoes.

Love the classic Boise look. Glad they’re sticking with it.

    Arizona Wildcats > Arizona Bearcats.

Boise’s current uniforms (especially when wearing orange pants) aren’t awful. Biggest problem is the wordmark rather than stripes on the pants.
Though their logo is way too late 90s early 2000s. Their throwback logo with Idaho outline in it is far superior.
