Ohio State Confirms All Scarlet Uniforms for Playoff Game vs. Tennessee

After a not-so-subtle tease last week, The Ohio State University Buckeyes have confirmed they will indeed be wearing their all-scarlet uniforms for this Saturday night when the team hosts its first ever playoff game in their famed stadium.

While there had been some talk that the team might wear their “post season” (Bowl game) throwback jerseys, ultimately the team will wear its regular red jerseys, which they confirmed when they showed off their “First Round Playoff” patch.

That’s the jersey the team has worn with the scarlet pants and socks, and IMO works much better with the all-red because the helmet, sleeve and pants stripes all match perfectly.

This will be only the second time the Buckeyes have worn the all-scarlet uniforms. The other time was when Ohio State defeated Penn State 33-24 on October 30, 2021, in Columbus. The school will also “Scarlet the Shoe” against Tennessee. OSU have done a “Scarlet Out” in each of the past four seasons, including the aforementioned Penn State game in 2021, against Iowa in 2022, also against Penn State in 2023, and this year, against Nebraska.

Here’s a couple looks at Saturday’s uniforms, including the new “First Round” playoff patch.

OSU vs. Tennessee will be the weekend’s final first round playoff game. On Friday night, Notre Dame will host Indiana (8:00 pm, ESPN/ABC), and then on Saturday, SMU will travel to Penn State (12 noon, TNT/Max) and Texas will host Clemson (4:00 pm, TNT/Max), before Tennessee and Ohio State kick off at 8:00 pm (ESPN/ABC). All times Eastern.

While the all-scarlet uniform will be a different twist, I like it as a uniform once a year. I love that the stripes all match perfectly, and it looks less “mono” that way — and if you think about it, all the team is really doing is swapping their gray pants for scarlet, as their “normal” home uniform has the team in silver-gray helmets, and scarlet jerseys and hosiery. Granted, that’s not a small substitution, but it’s not completely crazy either. And it’s a perfect uniform to wear for a “Scarlet Out.”

Following this weekend’s first round of playoffs the winners of their games will next play in the CFP quarterfinals on December 31 of this year, and January 1, 2025.

How do you feel about the Buckeyes wearing their all-scarlet? Should they instead have worn their 1968 throwback jersey (with the gray/white Northwestern striping), since they’ve worn that in previous Bowl games (and in which they won the Natty in 2014)?

Fire away.

Can’t wait for this trend to come full circle and some school to schedule a “Mismatch Out”.

Oregon has enough helmets and jerseys and pants every year where each player would wear a different combination.

Honestly they should start getting more creative like that. My high school did a “Hawaiian Shirt-Out” one week. We still lost by like, 30, but the stands were very fun to look at when walking off the field in shame.

    Boooooooooòooo

Getting sick of mono uniforms in general.

I don’t like a gimmick uniform for the playoffs, they could’ve worn these during the regular season. Just keep with the traditional combo, went Detroit Lions on us here.

Overall, as long as they don’t abuse it and wear it again during the next round or the championship game assuming they get that far then I’m okay with it. The mono white was terrible enough that they wore up in Pregon in a loss earlier this season, please burn those white pants, btw.

The stripes might match I guess. But there’s no other silver found on the uniform besides the helmet. I’d like it if the jersey and pants incorporated silver. Which I think they should just do anyways for the home uniform.

This gives a good visual for what the Seahawks could have had if they wore their silver helmets with the neon (action) green. A mono (neck down) bright color can be made excellent with a lighter color pairing. The Seahawks really need to push silver to the front if they want to upgrade the action green. The navy just doesn’t work as a sidekick. It needs to be trim on a green set.

I prefer the current jerseys over the 1968 design quite a bit, both independently and as the choice to accompany mono-scarlet. As for the choice of mono-scarlet…if it were paired with white or grey socks, I would have no problem. With scarlet socks, I don’t hate it but it’s either no better than, or a slight downgrade from grey-red-grey. In which case, why mess with a classic? Where OSU really needs red pants is with the white jerseys, not the red jerseys. Grey-white-grey has never been my favorite.

Yeah, I’ve checked those out on NCAA football and the red looks so good. Just get a little silver in the striping and it’d be an awesome look.

Like most mono-uniforms…it’s bad. With a white/light-colored (silver) helmet, it’s worse. Yuck.

The Ohio State University looks The terrible in The mono scarlet set, even if The striping is matching. But I guess a lot of The fans will love The uniform, especially if they beat the Vols (which I think they will not).

Rubbish. Plus, after that Michigan debacle, the last thing anyone needs to be worried about are the goddamned uniforms. Saying that as a fan of the team and of this site.
