Jacksonville Jaguars Wearing Prowler Throwbacks vs. Jets This Sunday

The Jacksonville Jaguars will wear their new “Prowler” throwback uniforms this Sunday when they take on the New York Jets.

It will be the second, and final, time the throwbacks see the field in 2024. They were worn once before, in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts.

That was a fantastic looking game, made better by the fact that the Colts, who rarely wear blue socks with their white jerseys, did so in this game. And because the Colts’ uniforms have changed little over the past few decades, the game almost looked like it could have been played in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

In addition to wearing their Prowler throwbacks in Week 5 against the Colts, the Jaguars also debuted their new alternate white helmet in a Week 10 loss to the Vikings.

Unfortunately for them, the Jaguars aren’t doing particularly well on the gridiron this season, entering Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a 3-10 record. However, one of those three victories actually came while wearing the Prowler throwbacks.

So they’re looking to go undefeated in the throwbacks on Sunday. The will probably have a decent chance to do so, since the Jets — major disappointments this year — are also 3-10.

You can all say “Just make the throwbacks permanent” in unison below.

After ditching two separate uniform sets after the minimum five years, the Jaguars introduced their current uniform set in 2018, making this their seventh season in this set. While the team has said nothing about introducing new uniforms for 2025 and beyond, because they’re well past the five year restriction, they could do so for next year.

The introduction of the new white alternate helmet and the Prowler throwbacks have led some to believe these are both precursors to a rebrand, possibly moving the throwback uniform to “primary” status as well as introducing a white jersey from the Prowler era to complete a new set. The Jets — coincidentally the Jaguars opponents this Sunday — actually did something very similar. Last season they wore the white “Sack Exchange” uniform as a throwback, and that was brought back as the primary road jersey/uniform this season. Could the Jaguars be planning on something similar?

Of course, the Jaguars could simply resign their uniforms and keep the Prowler as a throwback; the NFL will allow all teams to have three colored helmets next season, so they could keep the current black shell and the new white shell, and even add a third (teal?) color helmet going forward. But by introducing the new helmet and throwback this season, they could be protending a redesign for next season.

And how will Sunday’s game matchup with the Jets look? As of this morning the Jets (via owner Woody Johnson) haven’t yet revealed their pants and socks combination. They’re wearing white jerseys, so they can go with white pants and socks (not ideal), white pants and green hose (the best possible look), or pair their green pants with either white hose or green hose. Green pants and white socks will look good too — pretty much any combo with contrasting socks will look best.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the Prowler throwbacks on the field again, and it should be a pretty good uni matchup.

What are your thoughts on the throwbacks? And if the team were planning on a redesign for next season (or beyond), do you think the Jags should promote the throwback to primary or should they undertake another redesign, keeping the throwbacks as a once-or-twice-a-year treat for the players and fans and other fols with eyes?

I’d opt for a redesign with these and a white throwback of these as well. I’d have have all three color options available for pants and tops with a lot more gold and teal in the design if possible. Not sure on if 4 is the uniform limit. If so I guess I’d take away the white throwback if I had to.

Make a new black helmet with a little more gold incorporated and I think a gold helmet done right could look really good too.

How’s the helmet rules work if you have 3? Would they have to designate the 2 “new” ones for a certain top? Just wish they’d get rid of those and the limit on how many times you can wear uniforms. Could they mix and match the new black pants with the throwback top?

IMO just make it like college and give teams full freedom. If a team wants to wear all kinds of combos more power to em. I actually find it fun seeing new combos throughout the season.

Woops. Had a whole reply and not sure what happened.

I’d opt for a redesign and add a white throwback of these. Have all 3 color options for the tops and pants. I’d add more gold and teal all throughout. I think a gold helmet could look really nice if don’t right as well. Not sure if the jersey limit is 4 so if that’s the case I’d remove the white throwback.

Would they be able to pair the new black pants with the throwback? If a team has 3 shells do they have to designate the 2 alternates for a certain top? Just wish they’d get rid of the rules on that and the limits on how many times you can wear certain uniforms. If a team wants to mix and match throughout the year more power to em. I love seeing all kinds of combos throughout the year.

Hopefully the Jags paint the Santa hat on top of the jags logo at mid field this week like they used to do in the 90s! Always liked that as a kid!

It was a good looking and exciting game, alas the Jags could not win it so I hope they will not think: we will never wear these again. I love this uniform. Sure, it is retro, but update it a little and get rid of the current set. We need more gold with the Jaguars!
