Detroit Lions To Wear Blue Helmet/Black Jersey vs. Buffalo Bills This Sunday

Don’t look now, but when the Detroit Lions take the field against the Buffalo Bills this Sunday afternoon, they won’t be wearing Monolulu Blue! No, they didn’t suddenly come to their senses and decide to wear their nearly perfect blue jerseys paired with silver-gray pants. Unfortunately.

Nay, the team will be breaking out the alternate blue helmets and black jerseys once again. When the team unveiled their new uniform set earlier this year, not only did the team show the blue jersey/black helmet worn as an all-black below the waist…

…which they ended up wearing earlier this season in a victory over the Seattle Seahawks

…they also teased a blue/black/blue/black combo which could also be worn with the new alternate helmet and jersey.

Many of us were hoping the second time around, we’d get to see this combo in this Sunday’s game against the Bills.

Technically, the possibility still exists that the Lions will go with black shirts and blue pants. The team has not officially announced the full uniform combo for the game. They probably won’t do so until later today or possibly tomorrow. They haven’t dropped any hints, unless you count these flashbacks to the game in which the blue over black uniforms made their debut.

So yes, there is a *chance* the Lions will break out the blue/black/blue/black. But I’ve got news for you. It’s almost assuredly NOT happening.

Because the Lions are a superstitious team, sticking with Monolulu blue and mono-white uniforms for almost every home and road game (and going undefeated in both), I’d bet good money they’d go blue over all-black. But I do have a fairly trusted source who confirms they’ll go mono-black below the neck again. While I can’t argue with the Lions’ decision to keep wearing all blue and all white, and I completely understand if they do go blue/black x 3 again, sartorially, they have disappointed me this season.

I heaped a ton of praise on the Lions when they debuted their blue over silver-gray combo in preseason, calling it “almost perfect.” The team wore it exactly one time this year, in a Week 2 loss to the Buccaneers. We haven’t seen it since, and I guarantee we won’t for the remainder of this season.

Last time the team wore the blue/black alternate, I had a few thoughts. I don’t imagine those will change much after Sunday’s game.

But there is one bit of interesting uni news regarding the blue helmets. They’ve been wearing them in practice this week.

Which means we got to see the blue helmets paired with both white and blue practice jerseys (and red QB no contact shirts too). I have to say, I thought the blue helmet with the blue jersey could definitely work!

Not that I want them to drop the silver helmet — I just thought the alternate blue helmet looked pretty good with both the blue and white practice jersey. Maybe in a perfect world, the Lions would ditch the black jersey and pants, and consider making the Monolulu blue an alternate and wear it with that instead (they could swap out the black decals for silver/white to match the jersey). Or, how about changing the striping on the white jersey to match the helmet, and make that an alternate, to be worn with blue pants? I just don’t like the Lions in BFBS. But I do like the blue helmet.

I’m even more sure about the Lions doing the full-black thing than I was about the Packers going all-white or the Buckeyes going all-scarlet, and both of those are happening.

Is there still a chance the Lions won’t do the all-black thing? Sure. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

The only thing I dislike about the helmet is that the decal is very hard to see in the dim lights of the indoor stadium. Outside in the sun might look fantastic, but they need a brighter color of the lion to really pop off the helmet

How long before we can pick the uniforms we want to see & AI replaces the video for us? Monolulu Blue would seem to be purpose-built for testing that technology.

Really hoping Lions wear the blue pants this time around.

On another note…are the Saints the only team with an alt helmet to have never worn said alt helmet at home? They’ve only worn their black helmet on the road.

God, that is a brutal look. Why do so many teams trash their identities? Do the players
insist on mono uniforms? Do they push for BFBS? Is it because fans will always buy more merch, no matter how ugly? What’s the driving force behind this plague?

The Bills looked much better, even if it was a dreadful mono set. The black pants, the blurring decal on the helmet, the illegible NOB. Please get rid of these.

Bills would have looked even better with a red helmet, the Lions would have looked regal in silve/blue/silver/blue.
