Seattle Seahawks Wearing Neon Green Uniforms for SNF

Good Thursday morning, Uni Watchers. I hope everyone had a good Wednesday.

Before we get into the lede, a quick announcement. After a long hiatus, Collector’s Corner will be making a return to Uni Watch today! It’s no longer being produced by Brinke Guthrie, who retired from UW a couple years back, but by reader Christopher Weir, who intends to maintain the CC according to the high standards set by Brinke, with a new twist. That will run as a separate article later today and if you liked the old CC, you’ll love the new one!

Now then.

The Seattle Seahawks announced yesterday afternoon that the will be wearing their “Action” green uniforms, when they take on the Green Bay Packers for Sunday Night Football. And it appears the Packers will indeed be sporting their “Winter Warning” uniforms a second time (the GUD has them in all white for this game now).

According to the team, “Sunday night will be the eighth time that the Seahawks will wear the Action Green uniforms since making their debut in a 24-3 win over the L.A. Rams on Thursday Night Football in 2016. The Seahawks have won five of seven matchups when wearing these uniforms.”

The Seahawks have been successful in the neon-green uniforms since they were first used in a Color Rush game back in 2016. The Seahawks are one of the few NFL teams that still has and wears their original CR uniforms. And the Seahawks are 100% correct in asserting the team has a 5-2 record in the CR uniform.

But the Seahawks also have done something unique — they decided to mix-and-match their neon green jersey with navy blue pants and socks back in 2019, after they had worn only the full neon uniform the prior four games. Seattle would also wear the hybrid uniform (“Action” green jersey/blue pants and hosiery) on four separate occasions. Their record going green over blue? 3-1. So the team not only sports a 5-2 record in green jerseys over green pants/socks, they’re also 3-1 in green over blue. So their overall record when wearing a green jersey is 8-3. (8-4 if you include 2009; more below.)

There are some other interesting things about the Seahawks decision to wear the green jersey — it has always been for a Prime Time game. There have been a surprising number of repeat opponents as well. When in the green tops, the Seahawks have played 11 total games, but they’ve only worn them against four different opponents. They’ve been worn three times against the Rams, Cardinals and Vikings, twice against the 49ers and once against the Broncos.

Here’s a quick rundown of all the times the green jersey (either with green or blue pants/socks) has been worn, the opponents and results.

__________
The Seahawks debuted the mono-green uniforms for a 2016 Thursday Night Football game, and were victorious.

December 15, 2016: Seahawks vs. Rams
Seahwaks 24 – Rams 3

_________
The next time they were worn was in 2017, for another TNF game, and a second victory.

November 9, 2017: Seahawks vs. Cardinals
Seahawks 22 – Cardinals 16

__________
They’d wear them once in 2018, this time for a Monday Night Football game. The win moved the Seahawks to 3-0 in the neons.

December 10, 2018: Seahawks vs. Vikings
Seahawks 21 – Vikings 7

__________
In 2019, the team wore the mono-neon uniform once on Thursday Night Football, and in a second game that season, they created a mix-and-match of their regular navy tops and all-green bottoms. They’d run the win streak to four.

October 3, 2019: Seahawks vs. Rams
Seahawks 30 – Rams 29

They were victorious in their mix/match as well. That was a Monday Night Football game.

December 2, 2019: Seahawks vs. Vikings
Seahawks 37 – Vikings 30

__________
The Seahawks must have liked the mix-and-match, because they wore it twice in 2020. The first game was a Sunday Night Football game. The Vikings were victims of the hybrid uniform once again.

October 11, 2020: Seahawks vs. Vikings
Seahawks 27 – Vikings 26

The Cardinals were another repeat victim of the neon jersey, this time with navy pants and hosiery.

November 19, 2020: Seahawks vs. Cardinals
Seahawks 28 – Cardinals 21

___________
The team would return to wearing all green in 2021. In a Week 5 Thursday Night Football game against the Rams, the team would drop their first game in all-neon.

October 7, 2021: Seahawks vs. Rams
Rams 26 – Seahawks 17

__________
The team would once again wear the mono-greens as well as the hybrid in 2022. The team broke them out for the first Monday Night Football game of the season against the Broncos.

September 12, 2022: Seahawks vs. Broncos
Seahawks 17 – Broncos 16

For a late Thursday Night Football game against the 49ers, Seattle went with the neon/blue combo.

December 15, 2022: Seahawks vs. 49ers
49ers 21 – Seahawks 13

__________
With the Seahawks adding a throwback for 2023, they only wore the “Action” green once, against the 49ers on Thanksgiving.

November 23, 2023: Seahawks vs. 49ers
49ers 31 – Seahawks 13

__________
Longtime readers will also remember that in 2009, the April 1 Uni Watch post was about the Seahawks adding a green jersey. The joke was on Uni Watch, though, when Seattle wore green jerseys with their blue pants on September 27 (a Sunday afternoon game). When the 2016 game came around, Uni Watch told the full 2009 story.

September 27, 2009: Seahawks vs. Bears
Bears 25 – Seahawks 19

So there you have it. 8-4 overall in a green jersey, and 5-2 when the full all-neon has been worn. They’re looking to improve to 6-2 in Action Sunday evening.

I love the neon jersey, but I never liked it when they went full green. It was just a bit too much green, but when the team decided to mix/match with the blue pants, I was pleased. I’d always hoped they’d have worn the neon socks with the blue pants, but alas, that never happened. But even the green over blue looked good. With the Seahawks in all green and the Packers (apparently) going mono-white, we already have a clubhouse favorite for the And One. But I’ll still need to see how all this looks on the field.

What do you think of the all neon? How about the mix and match? From an aesthetics perspective, are you looking forward to this matchup?

Guess the Game from the Scoreboard

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Craig Rondinelli.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

Guess the Game from the Uniform

Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Jimmy Corcoran himself.

Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.

And finally...

…that’s all for the early lede. Please be sure to check back again for the inaugural edition of Collector’s Corner, v 2.0, and I’ll have at least a couple more articles today as well.

Everyone have a good Thursday, and I’ll catch you back here in the morning.

Peace,

PH

Guess the Game from the Scoreboard – 1959 playoff between LA and Milwaukee. Dodgers win their first pennant since leaving Brooklyn.

When I did an interview for NFL Films about the WFL, they asked me about Sonny Sixkiller who was briefly with the Bell. They then asked me if I saw Tom Dempsey a lot since he hung out with Sonny. I was kind of dumfounded, I had never seen Tom Dempsey and Sonny Sixkiller together in the Bell locker room and never heard that they were even friends? I told them that was a new one for me.

Green top and blue pants look best. Full green makes them look like they’re standing in for CGI characters in the next Marvel movie. Too much.

Not sure what the relevance of this game is, as it doesn’t have anything to do with the lede and it’s not the right answer to either Guess the Game question by a long shot…

I think he’s giving the answer to the “splash” photo. For those reading on their phones, that image appears first and probably at full size, leading some to think *that* game is the GTGFTU.

Mono neon is just an eyesore. I know Seattle has leaned into it as “their” color across the various teams like the Sounders and Reign. To the impartial observer, however, this is the equivalent of hiring a kazoo band for a wedding ceremony.

If you have to go neon, go in style:

I always liked the Orlando Thunder’s white/neon green/white/neon green combo. I wish Seattle would at least try it once (sans the white helmet of course).

Ooh… here’s a crazy idea. Seattle wearing their silver alternate helmets (redressed with the modern bird head but with a green bottom stripe), action green jerseys, gray pants, and green socks.

I can’t believe we’re going to have three Packers games end up as the And One this season

Yeah full agree here, Mono Neon just doesn’t work, but alternate color pants it works a lot better. I think other than mono white there are very few mono looks that work well.

With either Seattle pant color, I’d like to see contrasting socks. Which is most of us typing, about most teams, every week.

Sure I like the navy blue pants with this better, since I usually like the helmet to match the pants when the jersey is a different color. And yes, this would look better with neon green socks. However, I’m surprised that I like the mono neon. In fact I’d like to see this with a neon green helmet. I wonder if wearing neon is an advantage for the Seattle QB being able to see the receivers, especially for night games and cloudy and/or raining conditions?

I actually like the neon jerseys. Would be awesome to see them with white pants, but the mono neon ruins it for me.

And the Seahawks finally deciding to wear green against the Green Bay Packers of all teams is a very NBA-style oversight!

Seattle has never worn blue jerseys with neon pants? Honestly that’s a look I wouldn’t mind seeing (it would probably be bad, but the mono neon already is, so what is there to lose?)

Blue top with green pants would look better if their logo had more green in it, like the original design having a blue/green stripe instead of the current with the blue/gray stripe.
I don’t mind the green, mixed in, it is different and unique to them, but just no mono green. Have to pair it with blue in one combo or another.
I prefer just one helmet (aside from throwbacks), but if we are stuck in the world of various alternate helmets, also wouldn’t mind seeing them with a green helmet, so long as they pair it with the blue jersey.

    Nope.

As part of my “mix and match” piece (link), I did mock the Seahawks up with a blue jersey and neon green pants. (4th image below)

    link

I don’t think it looks nearly as good as the green over blue (even if contrasting socks are used)

Blue pants and neon socks would make it much more bearable. These against the cardinals all black are a thing of beauty and teams need to lean into this more.

I despised the all neon look but think it actually looks great with the navy pants. Really gives it the necessary contrast and is so much less harsh. Too bad they’ll go mono neon for this game.

I don’t hate the concept of the mono green, however, this would be improved greatly if they wore a silver helmet (lightens it up quite a bit) and it becomes a potentially good uni if they were to finally edit some of the doodads that are all over their unis. It’s also quite clear that the green looks very nice in certain lighting and quite sickly and unpleasant in others.

I wouldn’t care if we’d won five Super Bowls in these awful neon green jerseys. Make them go away.

Combine the Neon Green jerseys with white pants and navy socks. I think it would look nice.
