A little over a week ago, I published an article in which long-time reader Aaron Telecky looked back on how Uni Watch has influenced his life for more than 20 years. At the time, I hoped other Uni Watch readers would share their thoughts on this subject as well.
I’d like to make this a semi-recurring feature, so if you have any stories, please feel free to share them with me. You can e-mail me at phil.hecken@gmail.com.
Today I have shorter stories from two more UW readers. Hopefully more of you will share your experiences as well.
Good Afternoon Phil,
As a long time reader of Uni Watch I can easily say that the site was a big influence on me starting my own sports podcast (The Not Another Sports Podcast) with my best friend David. In fact he was the one to get me a Uni Watch membership card. I tend to reference the site a lot on the show and it’s even become a running gag that I refer to myself as a card carrying Uni Watch member. But it all comes from the sense of community that was created by the site, by you and Paul, and us the readers and I try to bring a little of that to the show when we discuss uniform changes or when we do our yearly coverage of the NHL Winter Classic and Stadium Series uni’s. Our show, like the site, never takes itself too seriously because at the end of the day we are just two guys who love sports and enjoy talking about it while making each other laugh.
I appreciate what you and Paul created and what you continue to foster.
thank you,
Jason
Next up is Drew (who wishes to keep his last name anonymous):
Hey Phil,
Long-time Uni Watcher here. Thanks for being a great steward of the site since Paul’s retirement and keeping the ball rolling.
So in regards to Uni Watch in my life, beyond the obvious daily reading to fuel my interest in uniform minutiae, I’ve honestly found the Culinary Corner pieces to have the longest lasting impact in my life. In fact, I’d argue it helped kick-start my love of cooking. I learned how to cook a perfect steak from Paul’s sharing of a video from a local butcher shop on how to do that. It had never occurred to me to even look up how to do this before. That may have been the “ah-ha!” moment for me that I could make great food myself.
I made several dishes from the Culinary Corner over the years, but one that has become an annual tradition is the Homemade Bailey’s recipe. I make it every year for the holidays, sometimes multiple times for multiple gatherings, and it always impresses. And the older I get, the more traditions matter to me. I’m happy to say I learned one of mine from Uni Watch.
Hope that’s helpful. Take care, Phil!

OK readers — feel free to share your stories on how Uni Watch has influenced your life, and I’ll be happy to keep running them!
Thanks for sharing, guys!
At the radio reading service where I volunteer, we do a podcast every Thursday. One of my co-hosts has become very uni-aware thanks to my many references to Uni Watch. He made a special effort today to point out how bad the Cardinals looked in their game against the Seahawks.
And Culinary Corner may be resurrected this weekend. Today’s dinner was even more awesome than I thought it was going to be.
I’m all ears, Jim!
