The No. 1 ranked, undefeated Oregon Ducks, with their 12-0 record, are heading into their first B1G Championship Game this Saturday night, when they take on Penn State. As you’re likely aware, Oregon was one of ten schools to bolt the PAC-12 after last season, and is one of four former PAC schools to join the B1G this season. And not surprisingly, Oregon also got five new uniforms this season, and they’ve been mixing and matching them throughout the year.
They’ve yet to exactly repeat any uniform combination (as you’ll see shortly), but they’ve come close a few times. All 12 of those uniforms were scripted out prior to the season. Has the team scripted as many as four more combos, with the B1G Championship and the playoffs still looming? (Of course they have.)
Last night the Ducks announced their uniform for the B1G game:
This is a new combination. We’ve seen the jerseys and pants before — they wore them in their victory over The Ohio State University — and are part of the “Fly Era” of the “Generation O” series. They also wore the jerseys last weekend when they defeated Washington.
But instead of topping the Fly Era uniform with a black helmet, the Ducks will be wearing a green helmet.
The green helmet is in an apple green shade, and will have a gray “O” decal on both sides. The facemask is black. The Ducks did introduce a green helmet with their “Gang Green” Generation O uniforms — I haven’t been able to ascertain if the helmet to be worn Saturday night is the same shell with the decals and face masks swapped, or if it’s an entirely new helmet. For most schools we could probably safely assume it’s a decal/cage swap, but this is Oregon we’re talking about.
So, for their 13th game of the season, the Ducks will wear their 13th different combo.
Here’s what they’ve worn for their 12 regular season games.

I’m definitely going to be locked in on this game. The clash of Oregon’s flashy, modern uniforms against Penn State’s Icy Whites should be interesting under the Hoosierdome Lukas Oil stadium lights. As most of you know, I have a love/hate relationship with Oregon and their uniform machinations, but it kills me every time they don’t wear gold (or yellow) and green. Yes, they’ll have a green helmet, but there’s not a drop of yellow anywhere on these. But they didn’t design these uniforms for me. If the kids (and fans) like them, and they keep on winning, I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the ride. Oregon tends to live and die in big games when they don’t wear school colors. But one more win and they lock up the #1 seed in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.
I mentioned above they likely have their next three or four uniforms planned out. The only way the team will wear four more uniforms is if they lose to Penn State in the B1G Championship. If they do, they’ll probably drop to the #5 seed in the CFP and need to play (and win) three more games to win the title. I’ll bet the Ducks don’t plan on having to wear that fourth uniform.
What do you think of the Ducks combo? Should they stop with the BFBS and GFGS for the Championship game (and all future playoff games) or should they just keep doing what they’ve been doing?
The game kicks off at 8:00 pm (ET) on Saturday night, and will be carried by CBS.
Yawn. A BFBS uniform which I’m sure will be worn with black tights to create that wonderful mono look we all love. I think the bigger joke is the Big 10 (aren’t there 18 teams??) championship featuring Oregon and Penn State. Man, college sports is a mess.
Maybe you mean “man, college sports aren’t very regional anymore”. #1 Oregon vs #3 Penn State for a conference championship doesn’t sound like a “mess” at all – in fact it sounds like a great match-up.
Ten years ago, I rolled my eyes at Oregon’s supposedly futuristic templates and use of every shade of green, yellow, white black and grey on the spectrum. At this point, I honestly look forward to their reveals each week. It’s been long enough that, to me, this is a solidified identity. They reinvent their brand nearly every week, but it doesn’t feel like a gimmick anymore. For a lot of people, I’m sure it never did. Maybe I only came around because the Mighty Oregon series are so beautiful. Either way, I’m excited to see the clash of old school and new this weekend, like you said.
the B1G Championship is on CBS not NBC
GAH! Good catch. Now fixed (thanks)!
Any of the September uniforms would have been good choices for thr BIG title game. I’d have preferred the September 14 look so Penn State could wear blue.
It’s a shame they aren’t wearing the green pants (it already has a white O on it!). I think a green/black/green/black look would be really good.
It’s actually a silver O (and swoosh), so it matches the helmets even better. I agree though, I would’ve loved this look with green pants, but kids these days love the unitard look so much and I don’t really understand it. I wish they’d wear more 3 color combos, but it ain’t happening with the kids picking them.
Barf green.
I’m not sure what you’re barfing up, but you might want to see a doctor.
As for the unis, I agree with the above poster that this has been their identity long enough to accept it.
Nah, need a dentist more these days.
Agree that this is Oregon’s look but this particular look makes me nauseous.
Historically is Oregon a green helmet team or a yellow helmet team? As in, before Nike took over their brand. I love the yellow/green/yellow look of the team, but really their green helmet looks good too.
IMO their Sept 28 and Nov 9 combos should be the full time uniform.
The answer is “a little of both” — but, mostly yellow. According to NationalChamps.net/Helmet_Project/ (great helmet-specific resource!), prior to Nike-ification, they only wore green helmets during a 4-year stretch from ’67-’71.
Huh, no announcement from Penn State yet about what we’re gonna wear! I wonder what it will be.
I appreciate Penn State’s commitment to wearing the same uniforms every time they lose big games. Maintaining their brand.
lolol
Should have worn the Nov 9 combo again. That screams Ducks to everyone.
Oregon did such a credible job of reintroducing older, more classic uniforms – school colors, block Varsity numbers – this year that this is a little sad. But it is Oregon’s brand and identity, so BFBS and diamondplate and less legible bespoke number fonts it is, with a dash of one of the school colors thrown in. They easily could have gone green jerseys with gold pants and this game would look amazing. It’s going to be Spy v Spy instead. Again.
Spy vs. spy with a bright green helmet?
The helmet looks to be Matte, so it wouldn’t be the same as the “Gang Green” helmet. The glare on the front of the helmet is more diffused on the matte finish.
When I was writing this, I actually had “new matte/satin finish” to describe the helmet, but I couldn’t tell 100% for sure if it’s different from the other green lid they already have. I am pretty sure it is, just not 100%.
This is the exact same shell as has been worn previously this season.
Sorry for the multi-post… The matter version of this green is what they wore from 2014-2023. There’s a video out when they dropped this new green lid where their equipment manager mentions wanting to switch it up this season and go for a “more anodized look”. So I think it’s just the lighting in this situation playing games with the finish.
That helmet looks yummy. Sour Apple, I assume.
Green socks and/or shoes might save it to some degree. Ain’t gonna happen, but it’d be more cool if it did.
If we assume the ducks win this game & became the high seed… they will be “home team” & have uniform choice for all remaining games. Do they have enough dark combos left to last the postseason?
I prefer classic green jersey. Unfortunately not too many combos are left for that jersey. Maybe yellow helmet with mono green?
Think we will see mostly the fly era design going forward. I agree with other posts green/black/green will work nicely
I’m sure they can scrape together three more combos with a dark jersey, and they could probably between the Gang Green and Gold/White alternates. But they also could wear a white jersey if they so chose.
I’m not sure whether it was Nike who decreed they’d wear white against TOSU in the first CFP final, or whether Oregon just felt like mixing it up. But that allowed TOSU to wear dark jerseys for the CFP final (they had worn white in beating Alabama in the semi-final).
Oregon wore mono-apple in beating Florida State in the first semifinal: link
THE OSU wore white in the second semifinal when they knocked off ‘bama: link
Oregon was the higher seed for the CFP final, yet wore white. TOSU was then allowed to wear their scarlet jerseys: link
The only other time UO played in the championship game was when they lost to Auburn (who I believe were the higher seed regardless). Once again, they didn’t wear school colors: link
I don’t care if UO wears white jerseys in the playoff. I just want them to wear school colors. Not just because green and gold/yellow are gorgeous, but because they’ve EFF’ed themselves twice in the CFP when they’ve gotten away from school colors.
This year is perhaps their best chance to rectify those two wrongs of the 2010s
I gnash my teeth that Oregon is so succesful this season on the football field. They constantly throw uniform traditions in the wind, are unashamed catwalk models for Nike and look more like a Swoosh PR team than a football team. So what do they do? They keep winning! And no, I will never get used to wearing ugly uniforms for the sake of innovation week in week out, even after a decade. Force feeding ugliness does not lead to my acceptance or me defending this path chosen by the Ducks (great nickname. by the way and I like all of their logos).
Check out articles on how much Phil Knight has spent on the Oregon sports program, and you’ll see that the Nike uniforms bought the winning. At least in this NIL era.
