Jacksonville Jaguars to Wear Rare Repeat Uniform Combo vs. Titans

When the Jacksonville Jaguars take the field in Tennessee against the Titans this Sunday, they’ll do so in a uniform combination they’ve previously worn this season. While that’s par for the course for most NFL teams, it’s actually a rarity for the Jaguars, who are one of a select few NFL squads to wear a different uni combo almost every week. In fact, this will be only the second repeat look for the team all season.

As you can see from the splash graphic, the Jaguars will wear a black helmet, white jersey, black pants and white socks. The only other combination they have repeated — and they’ve done so twice — is black/white/black/black. Every other uniform the team has worn this season has been unique.

I recently explored the multiple different uniform combinations for the Cincinnati Bengals, who so far this season have worn nine different looks, and the Carolina Panthers, who have exceeded the Bengals unique uniform pairings by one, and who wore their tenth different combo last Sunday. The Panthers, incidentally, wore 12 different combos in 2023. They haven’t yet unveiled their pants/hose combo for this Sunday.

I figured the Panthers were the NFL’s most prolific mix/matchers (and indeed, when this season is complete, they may be), but it turns out the Jaguars are their equals in this department. In fact, last season the Jaguars wore a whopping thirteen unique uni combos — which I believe is the “record” for a single season. Through their first 12 games this year, the Jags have worn different combos in ten of them, repeating only one combo (which they repeated twice): black/white/black/black.

It’s actually becoming more uni-newsworthy when the Jags repeat a combo, than when they break out a new one.

Here’s a look at all the different looks the Jaguars have worn this season. Note they repeated the B/W/B/B combo, first worn in Week 4, again in Weeks 6 and 11. All other looks have been worn just once.

A couple other notes here.

• When the Jaguars wore 13 unique uniform combinations last season, they did so with one helmet. Because they have three jerseys, three pants and three sock colors, and the team has no restrictions on what can be paired, simply mix/matching allowed them to wear 13 of 27 possible different combos.

• The Jaguars got a new (white) alternate helmet this season. They have so far worn it once, creating a never-before-worn combo of W/B/W/W in Week 10.

• The Jaguars also introduced a throwback uniform this season. This also produced a unique uniform.

• The Jaguars have one more “alternate” uniform week left this season. They could have created another new combo using the white helmet, but (thankfully) have opted to wear the throwbacks a second time. That will be another repeat combo.

In order to equal their own record of 13 unique uniform combos, the Jags will need to step things up. This Sunday will be their thirteenth game of the season, and we know they’re repeating the week 3 B/W/B/W look. We know they’ll be wearing the throwbacks again in week 15. In order to equal last season’s total of unique combos, they’ll need to wear different looks in Week 16, 17 and 18. The best they can do is 13 different combos this year. Not that I was hoping they’d break their own record, but it would have been interesting to see them try.

With the NFL loosening its alternate-use rules over the past couple years, and teams having three and sometimes four different pants and hosiery options, I don’t think it’ll be too long before we do get a team wearing 17 unique unis in a season (or even 18 when the NFL inevitably adds another game to the schedule).

Will the Jags be the team to do it? Hopefully they’ll redesign (making the throwbacks permanent) before then, but the way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jags go for it in the near future.

The current ones aren’t terrible, but they aren’t Jaggy enough. They are much too blah.

Strong bid for most boring uniforms in football, and most wasted potential. They look pretty good when there’s some (reasonably measured) use of teal and gold, but their seemingly-preferred B&W options are all so lame that it’s funny to see that they even bother to announce their combos.

They should try a gold jersey with black and teal details just for fun. With a black helmet and black pants, teal socks. Just for fun. I think it would look great.
