Good morning, Uni Watchers! And a good Tuesday to one and all.
UW pal/contributor/author Leo Strawn, Jr. joins us again today, with a short, but still deep, dive into slightly-less-than-modern helmets.
I have a feeling you’ll all really enjoy this one.
And now, here’s Leo with…

Gridiron Helmets (and One Logo) by Leo Strawn, Jr.
I’m Leo…welcome to my world!
As football season in beginning to wind down, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite helmets and one really creative logo I always liked. Nothing earth-shattering, just some cool stuff to look at.
I’ll begin with a couple of winged helmets from the 1930s-40s.
Next up is a good look at a Lucite facemask from the 1950s.
Here are a few rare Continental Football League (1965-69) helmets. From left to right: 1965 Norfolk Neptunes, 1967 Akron Vulcans, 1968 Alabama Hawks and 1969 Jersey Jays.
The USFL had some stellar looks and some of my all time faves. Hard to choose which one I like best out of the Michigan Panthers…
Boston/New Orleans/Portland Breakers…
and the Jacksonville Bulls.
I loved this creative Memphis alternate logo and always wondered why it wasn’t the primary one.
Indoors, the New England Steamrollers had a pretty cool helmet in the early days of the Arena League.
One of the most creative indoor football helmets of all time was the Iowa Barnstormers.
WLAF/NFLE had a couple that deserve props, the Birmingham Fire…
and the Frankfurt Galaxy. The idea of using a pixelated image of a galaxy in the 1990s was (yes, I’m going to say it) stellar.
* * *
Knowing that I was a 1970s youth, you may be wondering about WFL photos. They are on the back burner until next year. Got some cricket and misc. items coming up, followed by hoops.
Until next time…
Cheers!

Thanks, Leo! Love the look back at the helmets of yesteryear!
I have always contended that the Iowa Barnstormers had the greatest helmet in professional football — the depiction of the aviator “goggles” atop a leather “helmet” (as was the look of actual early pilots when they weren’t flying with goggles on) always struck me as incredibly clever — but without veering into “stupid” territory. The rest of the uniform was pretty forgettable (a propeller for a pant stripe???), but that helmet is outstanding, at least to me.
Do any of those old buckets strike a chord with any of you? I was also a huge fan of the Boston/New Orleans/Portland Breakers helmet, and I was quite bummed when the USFL 2.0 basically ruined the Breakers helmets. What’s your favorite “old” helmet design (either pictured above or in general)? How’d Leo do in terms of picking his favorites?
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
A Bit More on All Those Panthers Uniform Combos...
ICYMI, yesterday I had an article on the many different uni combos the Panthers have worn so far this year, and how they’re on pace to break their own record of 12 different uni combos in a 17-game season.
That prompted reader Dan Dove to send me the following:
Going straight to you with this, as you might find it interesting in light of recent Panthers uniform news…
Years ago… maybe 2014 or 2015, the Panthers wore white practice jersey with black pants at their training camp Fan Fest… see photo below. I saw this and thought, “Super cool… why not wear these in a game?” Until that time, save for maybe one game in 1995 or 1996, they’d never worn their white jerseys with anything other than white pants. Jerry Richardson was a traditionalist and wouldn’t have it.
Anyway, I wrote the equipment manager multiple times asking if we could possibly see that combo… he finally wrote me back in 2017 and squashed it. (I love that he actually used the word “never.” Suck on that, Jackie Miles!)
Then… they sold the team and all uniform hell broke loose.
Cheers,
Dan
Here’s the photo Dan included:
Dan was also kind enough to share correspondence he had with Jackie Miles of the Carolina Panthers, with whom he also shared that photo. In 2017, Dan wrote the following to Mr. Miles:
And here’s Jackie Miles’ reply to Dan:
That might be a bit difficult to read. It says “Unfortunately not. We are all about tradition and a traditional look. We will never mix and match our colors for games, just occasionally at fan fest.”
__________
Obviously that’s all changed now. But very interesting to note that as recently as 2017, the Panthers were “all about tradition and a traditional look.”
Thanks for sharing, Dan!
Guess the Game from the Scoreboard
Guess The Game…
…From The Scoreboard
Today’s scoreboard comes from Leo Strawn, Jr, who’s doing double duty today.
The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).
Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):
Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.
Guess the Game from the Uniform
Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.
Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.
Today’s GTGFTU comes from Miles Ward.
Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.
And finally...
…that’s going to do it for today’s early article. Big thanks — as always — to Leo for another really fun (and informative) Leo’s World.
I’ll have a few more articles today, including the popular Mike Chamernik’s “Question of the Week” segment, so be sure to keep checking back throughout the day.
Everyone have a good Tuesday and I’ll catch you guys back here in the morning.
I loved that Birmingham Fire logo – and the whole uni.
Probably my favourite football picture ever is in a World League book I have – it doesn’t work as a link, but if you google images “Birmingham fire WLAF Good seats still available” you’ll see the Fire along the line of scrimmage with the flames on the sleeves and helmets all working in sync. Beautiful.
It was the look I thought the Texans could pull off with the horns on sleeves and helmets… only to get them going in different directions. I would love to see a similar angle pic of the Texans from their red alts this year, just to see how stupid they look!
You wrote about the Barnstormers in the past tense but they still play with a similar uniform to the original. Helmets still have goggles too
The one in the article was the original Barnstormers helmet from the team that played in Arena Football League. The current team plays in a different league and uses a black shell with the goggles, (which doesn’t look as good to me).
Probably didn’t word that one as clearly as I could have, but I was referring to the helmet, not the team, when I said, “was”.
I’m not one to be elitist about teams based on their age, but I do find it funny that a team that hasn’t even been around for 30 years (and, at the time, barely 20) would be “all about tradition”.
I always enjoy revisiting these great helmet designs.
GTGFTU: September 29, 1996, Jacksonville Municipal Stadium; Jaguars 24, Panthers 13. First regular-season game between the two 1995 expansion teams.
Scoreboard was from November 2 1969 Denver won 13-0 over San Diego. Some fans had got to the scoreboard input and replace San Diego with Hot Dogs. Can’t imagine that happening today. The good old days.
I never knew the story behind that. I figured at least on UWer would know and share. Thanks!

GTGFTU: 29 Sept 1996, Week 5. Panthers 14 – 24 Jaguars. According to the GUD, this is the only game between these two teams where the Panthers black.
Great stuff, that Panther correspondence. And cool helmets presented by Leo! My favorite is not included: the WLAF/NFLE Barcelona Dragons. I love that helmet. As a former Amsterdam Admirals employee I hated everything about the Galaxy, including their logo.
My heart still melts every time I see a Breakers helmet. Such a unique and wonderful design.
As far as ‘winged’ styles go, I’m partial to the 2007 Philadelphia Eagles throwback:
…and that uniform is one of my ‘guilty pleasures’.
Wish the Titans had cribbed the Fire’s flame motif – that qualifies as a winged helmet, right?
Big big big fan of the Breakers helmet…its successor, as Phil pointed out, was a less-than effort – and a let-down.
All time best design is tough to pin down, but the Bengals striped bucket is a high ranking helmet – YVVM.
I loved this post- it brought back some good memories. I always loved the Breakers, Panthers and Bulls helmets!
Same here!
Never seen that Steamroller helmet before… LOVE IT!
That was my favorite Arena League helmet. Love the name, too.
The Chicago Bruisers at New England Steamroller game in 1988 is one of the all-time greatest uni matchups ever. link
I have never been a fan of that color scheme, but the Bruisers would have looked odd in anything but black & blue!
The Iowa Barnstormer helmet would be a great addition to a Washington Redtails’ uniform — they were the Tuskegee Airmen.
The Barnstormers helmets are one of the best ever, and their classic winged jerseys should have never been changed. They actually wore throwback jerseys during the last IFL season and looked fantastic.
I think they’ve moved to the goggles on a black helmet, which is just not as visually interesting.
I’m (lol) w Jerry. White top? white bottom – unless its the Cowboys, Steelers or Raiders.. White over black/dark just looks like a bunch of doods going to work in an office.
The WLAF had five of the best helmets in its inaugural year. In addition to the Fire and Galaxy, you had
-The Barcelona Dragons with the beautiful, ornate dragon head, link
-The London Monarchs with the clever use of the M for the crown link
-The NY/NJ Knights that seamlessly united the football and chess worlds. link
The Utah Pioneers were a team in the proposed PSFL, which never played a single game. Most of the helmets were outstanding, but I love the Calistoga wagon moving MUCH faster than it ever would have!
I loved that Birmingham Fire logo – and the whole uni.
