Marquette Men’s Basketball Unveils Throwback Gold Uniforms

The Marquette Golden Eagles will be living up to their nickname with a new throwback uniform for 2024-25, and they’ll be debuting it this evening when they take on the Stonehill Skyhawks at 9:00 pm (ET).

In a video released yesterday, the team showed off the “new” duds, calling it “the best uniform in college basketball.”

It’s hard to disagree with that statement.

Marquette have been innovators in terms of hoops uniforms over the years, but the uniform they’re returning to the court is my absolute favorite.

In terms of age, most of our readers will remember these uniforms — they’re throwbacks to the uniforms worn by the late 2000s/early 2010s teams. I’m not sure if that makes you feel old, but the Eagles will wear uniforms that were a mainstay of the team when they were alive.

Let’s take a look.

The team is calling these Retro Gold jerseys, and the one pictured above fairly replicates the original (the throwbacks themselves will have a maker’s mark). Although not unique to Marquette, the jersey (and shorts) feature an absolutely gorgeous tiled striping pattern on the shoulders and sides of the jersey, as well as down the pants leg.

In addition to the glorious tiled stripes, these uniforms feature the “AL” initials on the jersey, which of course refers to Al McGuire, the legendary coach who led the team in the 1960s and 1970s. “MARQUETTE” in a bespoke font face in sligthtly vertical arched lettering serves as the wordmark. The letters are white, with a thin gold drop shadow, and are outlined in thick navy.

The rear of the jersey shows the truncated tiled striping on the shoulders and around the neck, with NOB in navy blue. Rear numbers are also navy blue with a white outline.

But the best feature of the uniform, at least to me, is the tiled striping pattern. Alternating between navy blue, powder blue and gold, not only are the tiled stripes handsome, the colors complement each other exceedingly well.

__________

Not only are the Golden Eagles throwing back to my own personal favorite uniform, Marquette has a long and oftentimes unique history of basketball uniforms. Some of their more outstanding — and out of the box — uniforms would also make for great throwbacks (and a few have). Dig these:

The “Bumblebee” uniform.

__________

The “untucked” uniform. It was specifically designed to be worn untucked and was radical design when it was introduced in the 1970s. I’m extremely grateful that “style” never caught on.

__________

The “racing stripe” uniform. This was also a radical design in the 1960s and early 1970s. Sizes of the front number inside a circle varied, but the design mostly stayed the same.

__________

The original “tiled stripes” uniform. This was worn in the early-mid 1970s and served as the basis for both the current throwback and the uniform worn in the 2000-10s.

__________

As I said above, I absolutely love these throwbacks — they’re absolutely Marquette’s greatest uniform design, and are certainly among the best ever for any college team. The old school design still looks as good today as it did when first introduced.

Marquette has always worn cool uniforms. Especially liked the bold color blocks that ran down both sides. Happy they’re back—at least for one game.

I don’t even follow college basketball but the fact that these are throwbacks makes me feel old. Fire jerseys tho

Gorgeous! Bring them back in white, light blue, and navy as well. Basically make them their standard unis.

Watch the ESPN 30 for 30 mini on the MU jerseys. A fantastic tale.

And, I believe the NCAA still bans the untucked jerseys specifically due to Marquette.

They won’t allow for tailored hoops jerseys, but that same NCAA will allow football players to wear their sloppy, contrasting undershirts untucked for all to see, right? -C.

Marquette and the untucked jersey will always have a special place in my uni-heart!
My high school basketball team wore same style uniforms minus the wording on the bottom

Wish they would break them out for a game or two

Absolutely great uniforms, glad to see them again. Tiled striping on side panels, I love it. Remember the Bucks with shades of green and red?

At the game. Uniforms looked even better in person. Matched nicely with the court, which has the same color blocks along both baselines. Make these permanent.
