Is Florida State Planning to Debut Alternate Turquoise Uniforms This Weekend?

All week long there has been speculation that the Florida State Seminoles football team might finally debut the turquoise alternate uniform (or at very least, the jersey) this weekend when they take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in their penultimate game of the season.

All the signs pointed to it.

• “Seminole Heritage” and Homecoming is this weekend.

• The team first showcased its new turquoise uniform during the 2024 Spring Game to honor its relationship with the Seminole Tribe.

• EA Sports added the “Seminole Heritage” alternates to their College Football 2025 game.

• The ‘noles are currently 1-9, so this feels like the perfect time to debut a new uniform combination.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon your perspective), the Seminoles will not be wearing any turquoise this weekend, although it’s not out of the question they may, at some point, do so.

“We’re going to stay in traditional dress,” FSU Head Cocah Mike Norvell said during a news conference yesterday. “Obviously, so much respect for the heritage, as I mentioned the other day, but this is something we’ve done. Kind of used them a little bit in recruiting. There could be future opportunities where we break those out, but this week we’re going to stay with a classic look.”

The team generated talk of wearing the turquoise alternates after wearing them during their Spring game earlier this year. Players were seen wearing turquoise jerseys and gold helmets, some with gold pants, and some with garnet britches.

Per Florida State’s game notes, the University celebrates its long-standing relationship with the Seminole Tribe of Florida by featuring turquoise — the color that represents harmony, friendship and fellowship throughout Native American communities.

While the football team hasn’t (yet) worn turquoise, FSU teams have worn turquoise jerseys for years to honor the Seminole Tribe. The men’s basketball team was the first to sport turquoise uniforms in 2013. The FSU women’s basketball team has worn turquoise uniforms for years, as well, while the women’s soccer goalkeepers have worn turquoise jerseys since 2022. The baseball team has worn turquoise hats to honor the Seminole Tribe.

While the team won’t be wearing turquoise this Saturday, it will still be a part of the game, as coaches and sideline staff will be wearing gear featuring the color for the Homecoming game, as they have done previously.

While I’m not generally a fan of teams wearing alternates, I absolutely love the turquoise jersey. When the team broke them out for their spring game, I thought they might finally be preparing to wear them in an actual game. Once EA sports added the options to their College Football 2025 game a month ago, I was even more hopeful. Unfortunately, it appears this isn’t going to be the year.

For a couple years now, the Seminoles have been showing recruits the uniforms, and we’ve seen several post photos to Social Media wearing various combinations featuing the lovely blue color. One of the more interesting looks was with a white helmet over mono-turquoise uniform:

I’m not sure I want to see the above combination on the field, but I do like the look of the gold/turquoise/gold and to a lesser extent, the gold/turquoise/garnet, both of which were featured during the spring game. If there were ever a game to debut the turquoise, this weekend would have been it. Maybe next year.

What do you think of the look? It’s not something I’d like to see every week — once a year would be fine — but I’d still like for the team to wear them during a regular season game. They’ve worn turquoise in basketball, soccer, and softball, so football would be the next logical step. I’d also love to see them for baseball.

Do you think the football team should try it as well? Or should they just stick with their traditional garnet and gold (for those of you who like when FSU looks like FSU)?

As much as I understand the history of the turquoise color and what it means to the Seminole tribe. FSU should only wear either gold turquoise gold or white turquoise white only becuase turquoise and Garnett make me vomit as a color combo

I think white-turquoise-white or white-turquoise-garnet would work. Don’t like the gold and turquoise combination; looks a bit like tulsa

Yeah, white-turquoise-white would be a decent look. White-turquoise-turquoise looks off, and the gold doesn’t work at all.

    • “The ‘noles are currently 1-9, so this feels like the perfect time to debut a new uniform combination.”

In all honesty, I feel the complete opposite. Wearing the turquoise jerseys is like a special treat for the players. After playing so poorly all season, I feel like keeping their traditional uni’s for the remainder of the season projects a more business-like approach, as it should be in order to help turn the program in the right direction.

Agree with this on a different level. I think it’ll just exacerbate the jokes and the way the season has gone already, if you didn’t know who this team was there is no way you’ll ever know now, etc.

I’m not sure if the full soccer team has ever worn turquoise, unfortunately I’m not able to check right now, but the image linked shows the goalie in turquoise and the outfield player in gold.

I believe it was only the keeper who wore the turquoise, but the rest of the team has not.

If they’re going to wear them at all this year, then next week (Thanksgiving weekend) against Florida would be the last opportunity…although considering how their season has gone, maybe this is best left until next year.

I was about to comment the same thing. Against Florida would make more sense to break out a new uniform.

I don’t understand why they use the turquoise as a recruiting tool but then never wear it once that recruit commits. Isn’t that something of a bait and switch?

Mono looks a bit off, but with one of their traditional color scheme pants I think it looks good.

I think this has potential, but it’s pretty slapped together like this so it doesn’t really look coherent. Specifically, not having any turq outside of the special jersey, and no stripes to tie it together. I’m also not sure about this specific hue.

The bare bones of the color combination (turquoise or light blue alongside maroon/claret/garnet) is almost totally absent from American sports, although you do see it elsewhere (English soccer teams, the West Indies cricket team, for example).

“Kind of used them a little bit in recruiting.”

This makes my soul ache. It’s such a gross gimmick. I hate the idea that a school would have a jersey they may not ever actually wear, but they can drag it out so some 16-year-old thinks the team is cool. The tail is so completely wagging the dog here.

While I am a traditionalist, especially with FSU football, at least the turquoise has a connection and is not a BFBS, WFWS, GRGS type deal. I like the jersey with either the white or gold helmet and garnet pants. Even though this has been a tough season, they are still one of the best looking team in all of football.
