Indiana Pacers Release New City Edition Uniform for 2024-25

The Indiana Pacers joined most of the rest of the NBA on Thursday, releasing their new 2024-25 City Edition uniforms. If those look a bit familiar to you, it’s because they’re another team on a “two year story arc,” and last season they unveiled a very similar uniform with a base color of black. Their 2024-25 uniforms will be white.

We’ll start, as always, with the video…

I don’t ever include second videos, but this very short one shows how the new CE is literally a color swap from last year.

With that said, let’s take a look at this year’s uniform.

While it’s a color flip, the highlights (literally) of this uniform are the bold blue and yellow and black that form the colors of this uniform. “INDY” is written across the chest in bright blue, with a black drop shadow and a yellow outline. The font is very reminiscent of one of Microsoft’s earliest offerings, “Comic Sans,” the universally detested font face.

Arm and neck openings have a thin three-stripe pattern of blue/black/yellow, and the back features player NOB in black. Front and rear numbers are also black, in the same font style as “INDY.”

Side panels are a combination of black and yellow, in a “paint splatter” motif.

Shorts are white, with the same paint splatter pattern running down the sides. The waistband has a state of Indiana logo, and the classic Pacers “P” logo is down the sides of the pants. Small blue hashes are present at the bottom of the splatter pattern.

Of course, there’s storytelling involved…sort of.

It’s interesting is that the team appears to have created several “handwritten” font faces, later settling on the one they are using, as seen in this graphic:

As is the case with most teams, the Pacers will have a special CE court to be used whenever the uniform is worn. It’s (surprisingly) the first ever alternate court the team will use. Although it’s a retread from last year.

The Pacers will wear this uniform a whopping twenty times this season, beginning with Sunday afternoon.

There are actually a couple things on this uni that I like — and those are the bright colors. I don’t hate the paint splatter pattern as much as I thought I might, but that’s probably because I’m quite partial to the combination of bright yellow and black (some of Oregon’s football uniforms also use these colors to striking effect). My least favorite feature(s) are the font used for “INDY” and the uniform number. I know it’s not Comic Sans, but it’s in the same family, and I’ve detested that, and similar “handwriting” fonts for decades. If you want to have your uniform look like it was designed by a child, what better way to do that than to use a font that looks like it was written by a child? Likewise, it feels like a bit of a cop out to use a colorswap for a two year uniform arc. As I’ve said before, this to me feels like the uniform designers have run out of ideas and decided to phone it in. But it’s far from the worst CE out there, and I’m sure there are some who are big fans.

Your thoughts?

So uninspiring and uninspired. Indiana(polis) has more to offer than splatter paint and comic sans I hope and expect.
