Boston Celtics Unveil 2024-25 City Edition uniform

[Editor’s Note: Our own Anthony Emerson has reviewed the new City Edition uniforms for the Boston Celtics, his favorite NBA team, as well as being your reigning NBA champions. Enjoy! — PH]

The reigning NBA champs are one of many teams who formally released their City Edition uniforms today. The uniforms will make their on-court debut against the Raptors on Saturday.

The launch video is below:

According to the press release, this jersey represents “Chapter Two of a multi-season story arc.” Last year’s City Editions represented basketball history, and this year’s are supposed to represent the future, even describing the wordmark and number font as “future-forward.”

And don’t adjust your screen — the wordmark and number aren’t in Celtics green. This is “action green,” a more neon-ish shade. The uni also features what the Celtics call “pro-green,” which is darker than standard Celtics green.

The side panels feature what the press release calls the “weave,” and I do kind of dig that design element.  The “weave” is also the one throughline that connects to last year’s City Editions, which had that element, too.

Everything else I hate. “Action green” is ugly. The fonts are ugly. The “storytelling” smacks of BS. It is beyond obvious that Nike and/or the NBA is out of ideas for this program. And I’m not just someone who’s reactionary about changes made to the team I support — I adore some Celtics city editions (2018-19, 2021-22, and 2022-23 to be specific). This year’s offering just seems lazy, staid, and needless.

More photos are below.

Okay, so I’ve ranted about this — what say you?

This feels more like a practice jersey rather than something that should be worn during games.

Hahaha. Nothing captures that supposed Celtics pride and tradition like neon green. Add this to the reasons I’m not a Celtics fan. Keep it up, NBA. Enjoy your fall to the bottom.

I have only followed the NBA from a distance in years! I usually know who is the champs and some star players; but am far from a fan. Could a team with the history of the Celtics, not do as the Yankees did and say we are not wearing this crap? Why on earth would a team like Boston wear anything but the white and green of the 70s and 80s. These uniforms are hideous especially for teams rich in history like Boston, LA, Chicago etc.

Agreed. I don’t know why the Celtics ever participate in this schtick. They slap a little extra trim on the uni or they go off script for this type of stuff, either way it’s pointless or it’s not the Celtics. Same goes for the Lakers. If they don’t “throw back” to the light blue years, they are just futzing with the outline or drop shadow and calling it new.

The players look like they’re trapped in an escape house where they have to wear these uniforms until they can work together as a team to escape and change their clothes.

I miss the good old days when Boston wore its traditional shade of green and had a big, honking GE ad on their jersey.

Celtics have actually had some really solid city edition looks. This is not one of them. This really trying to look modern which just doesn’t work with team’s identity. You could get away with this with maybe the Jets, but not the Celtics.

The Celtics keep trying to design new black unis and they always look terrible (gray has never worked for them either). Honestly surprised they haven’t done a baby blue and yellow Boston Marathon look yet like the Red Sox, would likely be better than these.

The kind of jerseys you buy in a far away country on a local market for next to nothing. Yes, genuine Celtics shirt, sir!
