The New York Knicks, along with most of the other NBA teams, have unveiled their new City Edition uniforms for 2024-25. Many of the teams have released lots of photos and descriptions, hype videos and other bits of information showing off the features and “storytelling” for the new CE unis. The Knicks are decidedly not one of those teams.
Like the Pistons, it feels as though the Knicks have basically just gone through the motions on this one. And that’s not particularly surprising, since this years CE is basically just a color swap from those introduced last season.
There was no hype video, and no real press release with glowing word salads describing the new uniform. The team released five photos to social media. Let’s look at a couple of those now.
As you can see, these are just white color swaps from last year’s CE uniforms. They have very subtle pinstripes (if you click the above photos to enlarge, you’ll be able to see the stripes), with an old school “NEW YORK” wordmark rendered twice across the chest. Numbers are orange with blue outlines. Thick orange stripes are on the shoulder and arm openings, and a large orange/blue/orange side panel is on the jersey and continues down the sides of the pants. The base of the shorts have thick orange stripes on the hems.
About the only storytelling is found in this graphic:
The team is billing the uniforms as “A Return To A Golden Era” and is described as follows:
The New York Knicks have revealed their 2024-25 City Edition uniform, once again teaming up with Kith and Nike to create a design that blends past and present. This year’s jersey is a color-flip of last season’s, which paid tribute to the Knicks’ late 90s and early 2000s era.
The 2024-25 edition features the iconic stacked “New York” wordmark — a nod to the phrase “The city so nice, they named it twice”— in blue over orange. The uniform’s white base, accented with subtle pinstripes and royal blue side panels, brings a classic look to the court. Unique to the Knicks, the Nike NYC City Attack logo appears on the chest and shorts, highlighting the team’s strong roots.
Here are a couple additional photos:
As with the Pistons, I don’t want to come down too hard on the Knicks communications or social media teams, but these also feel like minimal effort went into them. While they definitely harken back to the Patrick Ewing-era, I never understood why the team doubled up on “NEW YORK” as a wordmark. Citing the Michael Scott-esque line of “A city so nice they named it twice” to me doesn’t justify that hard to read wordmark. I had the same concerns last year when the team introduced the blue version of this uniform.
Some of this year’s City Edition uniforms have been very good to excellent (even if there’s no need to introduce a new uniform every year), and some are…not. This falls into the latter category. It’s almost as though the Knicks (and Pistons) are flipping the proverbial bird to the entire notion of a new CE uniform yearly.
Other than the wordmark, I like these, as they do remind me of the Knicks during the 1990s when they reached two NBA finals and were a powerhouse team for most of the decade. But like the Knicks, I fail to see the need for these.
The Knicks are expected to debut the new/old look on Sunday night when they face the Brooklyn Nets at Madison Square Garden. There has been no mention of a special City Edition court, but that’s probably in the works as well.
Your thoughts?
I don’t understand this design at all…it’s a white version of what they did last year, and the chest logo still looks like a printing error. This is by far the worst of all the City Connect designs.
“A return to a golden era” should mean the early 70s for the Knicks.
To throw back to the Ewing era is a return to the Bronze Age or the Silver Age, to borrow terminology from the comic book world.
Isn’t the general consensus that teams needing a new City Edition every year is stupid? Why then are we criticizing the Knicks for using similar ones from last year? IMO these are pretty good looking, and unlike most City Editions, look like Knicks uniforms.
So, they doubled down on double dumb?
Too bad they didn’t create a jersey using that hand drawn type on the storytelling graphic – that type has more personality than anything else they came up with
I had to rub my eyes a few times to make sure I wasn’t seeing double.
I actually give them kudos for *not* doing a hype video.
Ultimately, I can never get behind these because of the double-wordmark, which I find visually irritating to look at. There are plenty of uniforms I don’t like, but I can’t think of any others that actually evoke a visceral response that makes me not want to look at them. Other than that, they’d be pretty good.
I’d like to see the pinstripes done a little bit more heavily (darker, I guess). I think they look better in the graphic than in the photographs. Admittedly, it looks like the Mets but basketball (obviously it’s the other way around if anything), but I think that’s fine. I like when teams in a city have the same colors.
The NYC-swoosh logo is silly because it says “NEW YORK” right underneath it, but at least it hides the swoosh somewhat, so I think I’m for it. Funny how their jersey advertiser is just another city, but I’m sure that’s been pointed out.
The shorts look sharp, despite the bizarre template.
This just looks like a misprint.
Good thing I’ve got an appointment with the eye doctor. I’ve been seeing double.
Knicks should play Foreigner’s “Double Vision” on nights when these are worn.
Good night and thank you.
Lazy, ugly, uninspired design. Perfect summary of the CE program.
Those jerseys make me dizzy LOL
Why not use one of the fonts from the poster?
Kudos to the Knicks for going through the motions on this and not giving it much thought or attention. Here’s hoping Uni Watch follows their lead because there has to be something else to focus on other than this hot garbage.
I HATE the double-wordmark. It’s visually disorienting – no matter how many times I see it. Just the worst.
