Washington Huskies Unveil New Black Uniforms, Will Debut Friday Night

After unveiling a new black helmet and a retail version of a new black jersey a couple months ago, the University of Washington Huskies have finally revealed a new all-black (BFBS) uniform. The team will wear the new uniforms this Friday night against UCLA, the team’s final home game of the season. The prime time matchup will be on FOX, and kick off at 9:00 pm (ET).

The team has also called for a “blackout” and request all fans in attendance to wear black.

Naturally the uniforms were revealed in a video, with lots of quick cuts and just a few quick glimpses at the new uniforms:

Here are some looks at the uniforms from some stills provided by the team.

The last two shots provide our best looks at the uniform. The previously unveiled helmet is black with a matte finish, and features a purple/gold/purple center stripe. The facemask has a metallic gold finish.

The helmet will feature the team’s “W” logo, rendered in purple and outlined in gold.

We also got some other looks at the uniform via a tweet which partially shows the uniforms, using an “eclipse” motif.

The jerseys and pants will both be black, with the jerseys having a purple/gold/purple sleeve cap stripe. Based on the stills, it appears the numbers will be white with a thin gold outline — however, when the team revealed the replica versions of the jersey, those numbers wre gold:

Why the discrepancy? If you watched the video, there were some very quick cuts of a player in uniform. The front view gives us a better look at the new jersey/helmet.

You can see a partial look at the number which appears gold. The rear view offers an even better look:

Player NOB will be gold, and the number on the jersey appears to be a shade of gold as well. It was difficult to tell in the video, but it appears the numbers and NOB will have some sort of color-shifting properties — as seen in this screen grab where player NOB begins to change from gold to purple.

And although none of the photos or videos showed it clearly, the pants will have “purple and gold streaks” along the sides. I’m pretty sure those purple and gold “streaks” means pants stripes (which would make sense, and follow the purple/gold/purple stripe pattern of the helmet and sleeve caps), and which one can sort of see here.

__________

This is not the first time the Huskies have done BFBS. In 2013, they wore a BFBS uniform, including a black helmet, against Oregon (it was almost a Spy vs. Spy game).

That helmet was a matte finish with purple/gold stripes that truncated from front to back, and those helmets had the same purple/gold decal as the 2024 BFBS helmet.

In 2014 and 2015, they kept the same black matte shell but removed the stripes, wearing those helmets with a BFBS uniform.

They kept the same helmet and uniform for a 2016 game against USC, but swapped out the purple/gold decal for a Stars & Stripes decal.

They would dabble with some black accents on their purple helmets in 2018-19 (so BFBS although the helmet wasn’t black), which included a black “W” decal and black facemask.

And once again, in 2020, the team would wear another black helmet. In a game against Arizona, they’d introduce an all-new BFBS uniform to pair with the helmet. The helmet was again matte black with a purple/gold “W” decal. There were no stripes on the helmet.

So that’s their prior history with a black hat. In every case, they’ve worn a black uniform with it, so it’s at least likely (if not certain) that the team will pair the helmet with a BFBS uni. While the new helmet isn’t the first one with stripes, it is the first black helmet with the purple/gold/purple center stripe and a metallic gold cage.

Having now seen the jersey — and assuming the pants will not be solid black, but will have a stripe matching that on the helmet and the jersey sleeve (caps), this could be UW’s best-looking BFBS uniform. As you can see above, their previous looks either had purple numbers (hard to read) or, when they actually used white numbers, had plain black pants. Yes, it’s still BFBS, but if we are to rate it as just a uniform, it might be pretty decent looking on the field.

Honestly, UW has two really solid uniforms with their gold/purple/gold home classics and their gold/white/purple roads. Even when they go gold/purple/purple or gold/white/white, they still look good (and they Look Like The Huskies).

__________

I’ll need to see the uniforms in action and under the lights to be able to give a true opinion, but as a BFBS uniform, I think it will look fine. And obviously, this won’t be the first time the Huskies have gone BFBS.

Like last year’s National Champion Michigan, the runner up Huskies have fallen on a bit of hard times this year. They currently have a 5-5 record (5-0 at home), and will look to secure a bowl appearance with a win over the Bruins.

Thoughts?

CFB bare legs now looks better than the NFL, with most of the NFL teams wearing socks that match the pants.

Any U-Dub supporters out there for their takes on these?
I’m with you, Phil, need to see them on the field Friday night, especially to figure out their white-or-gold numbers and hope they’re better than Texas Tech’s numerals on the Mahomes Galvanized sets turned out to be media unfriendly.
I am also how interested to see how their fans respond to the “Wear black” request; maybe it will work, since the Huskies have done the black kits before. If mixed with purple-dressed fans, it might create a bruise effect

“….it appears the numbers and NOB will have some sort of color-shifting properties…”
Maybe it’s just me, but it looks like the gold NOB is just reflecting back the purple lights. I think it’s an optical illusion from the photoshoot.

This is a better looking black uniform set than they have worn in the past, digging the black and purple and gold.

    1987 UW Alum.

Gold pants. Always. Everything else blows.

Black has no business anywhere near a Husky.

“This is a better looking black uniform set than they have worn in the past”

This is like being taller than Muggsy Bogues.

UW is a modern tragedy. Not just the BFBS, but the subpar looks in recent years made worse by the terrible Adidas templates. They can be a great-looking team again the second they choose to.

UW have two shades of purple and three shades of gold as their brand identity with a number of accent colors. None of them are black. What’s the purpose of creating a brand identity if you never follow it?

An all black uniform! Who would have ever thought of this! So original!

A trend that needs to disappear!

At least the pants have stripes. And it means UCLA can wear Gold/Powder/gold/Powder. Perfect.

As a stand alone BFBS uniform not bad, as a Huskies uniform very bad meaning not good at all.

Seriously, do they not just stand back and look at some of these first before getting the green light to produce them? This one among many others just look atrocious.
