Texas Tech to Debut New “Mahomes Galvanized Uniforms” This Saturday

The Texas Tech Red Raiders will debut their new gray/red uniforms on Saturday afternoon against Colorado, and they’re not your typical football uniforms. Designed by adidas, NFL Quarterback (and former Red Raider) Patrick Mahomes and the team, it features Mahomes’ signature “Gladiator” logo — one of the first times in history that an athlete’s personal brand has been included in official on-field apparel. Mahomes’ logo is shown on the right in the graphic below:

The school is referring to these as the “Mahomes Galvanized Uniforms.”

Let’s take a look at the uniform now.

HELMET

The helmet is dark gray, and features a white “double T” logo on both sides, in white and gray beveling, and outlined in red. The facemask is red. It has a center stripe that is a silver/gray with what is being referred to as a galvanized film with a metallic finish. This stripe has thin red stripes on either side.

JERSEY

Like the helmet, the jersey is also dark gray, featuring two semi-stripes on the shoulder caps, in the same metallic finish as the helmet stripe, and also outlined in red.

The front of the jersey has three logos across the top: BIG XII to the right, the Double-T on the base of the collar, and Mahomes’ logo on the left side. “TECH” stretches across the front, in the same silver/gray metallic as the sleeve cap stripes, also outlined in red.

Front numbers are, unsurprisingly, rendered in the same style as the sleeve stripes and the wordmark.

The jersey back will have player NOB in silver/gray, while the numbers are in silver/gray outlined in red (as on the front).

Of course, with the silver/gray material being reflective, anything coated with it will…well, reflect.

PANTS

The pants, like the rest of the uniform, are gray. There are two silver/gray stripes with red outlines running down the sides. They are shown with high red socks (in college, players are not required to wear high socks, although some do). The Mahomes logo will appear on the left hip.

_________

As I noted when the uniforms were introduced, I will definitely need to see how these look on the field to render a full opinion. But from what I’ve seen so far, I like the helmet, and it will be interesting to see how the reflective material shows up. Thankfully, the uniform has lots of stripes (a good thing), and those who go with high socks will have red hosiery, so the mono-effect will be somewhat muted. This is one of those types of uniforms that could look either really good or really bad.

The game against Colorado begins at 4:00 pm (ET), and will (I believe) be on FS1.

Your thoughts on the unis?

“one of the first times in history that an athlete’s personal brand has been included in official on-field apparel.”

Although I’m not positive as to why, I assume the Jordan “Jumpman” logo does not apply to this discussion.

I guess because it’s directly Nike IP for the Jordan brand? Is the Pat Mahomes branding owned by Adidas?

That’s what I came here to post. You beat me to it. Also, Ohio State wore LeBron logos for a few years in the mid 2000’s.

I actually think this uniform would be a lot better if the helmet was black (as it appears in the first photo). If that were the case, black pants might improve it too.

If Colorado comes out with their gold chrome helmets, and white jerseys with reflective gold numbers, this game could be a nightmare for broadcasts.

The Mahomes uniform isn’t awful, it just looks like something better suited for a high school team.

I think this will look pretty good either way. For me gfgs looks worse than bfbs, but everything is legible due to the bright red outlines and stripes and if they wear red socks it will look pretty good. This isn’t going to be their best look, but the aesthetics of any game they wear this in will be determined by the uniform they go up against. Its kind of right down the middle for me overall (with slight bonus points for looking “cool”).

White numbers with red outlines would look much better. at least there are red socks. Not grey socks.

    Don’t care for it.
Not enough RED displayed . . . the University mascot is the RED Raiders!
Too much emphasis on trendy uniforms . . .

TT’s unis may have been the ugliest I’ve seen on-field all season. The shiny metallic elements and the drab gray helmet/jersey/pants just looked awful on TV. The front of the jerseys are overcrowded with 3 logos and that giant T E C H stretched across. Retire these and don’t look back.

I was hoping that the Mahomes Gladiator on-field look would do these well, but the metallic numbers and helmet logo trim were a nightmare, especially when they reflected the setting sun. One improvement occurred when a player’s red undershirt came untucked and offered the kit a little more contrast.
