After last weekend was “throwback” weekend in the NFL, for Week 10, we’ll apparently be having “alternate helmet” weekend.
The Jaguars will debut their new white helmet when they take on the Minnesota Vikings (who will be debuting their own white helmet and new uniform later this year).
The Jags will be one of four teams wearing alternate buckets in Week 10. The others are the Houston Texans, who will be debuting their new red helmets and “Battle Red” uniform Sunday on Sunday Night Football; the Ravens, who will debut their new “Purple Rising” helmet tonight for TNF; and, in a move just announced, the Panthers will again wear their alternate black helmets and debut an all new uni combo in Germany on Sunday morning.
We still don’t know the full combination the Jaguars will be wearing when they debut their new white helmets, but we do know they’ll be pairing them with their black jerseys. When the helmet was first announced, here’s a video the team produced:

This feels like another one of those “because we can” alternate helmets. It may look good on the field, but it seems entirely unnecessary. Earlier this year, I took a look at all the white helmets in the NFL, and half the NFL wears a white helmet, either as a primary or as an alternate. (And here’s how the remaining NFL teams would look if they added a white bucket.)
We know the Jags will pair the white helmet with their black jersey. But they could make many different uniform combos with the new alternate lid:
I just hope they don’t go white/black/black/black. A white/black/white/black combo might end up looking OK on the field.
What do you think of the Jags new white alternate? And how do you feel, in general, about the increasing number of white helmets in the NFL? Some of them are designed to be worn with throwbacks, so those are “necessary” but what about the alternates? Several of the teams with white helmets are pairing them with white uniforms for that “icy white” look (a trend which may some day approach BFBS levels of awfulness). Are you all for teams trying to wear as many different combos as possible, which seems to be what this alternate white helmet trend is encouraging. Next season, ALL NFL teams will be permitted to add a third helmet — how many of those do you think will add a white one…simply because they can.
Your thoughts?
I figure I’ll leave this comment here as it has to do with some thoughts I’ve had about Uni-Watch recently. I feel like it’s become the football uniform website. Most articles are just about football uniforms. I know I’m not the audience for this, I don’t watch football, but an article just for a team debuting a white helmet? I thought there would have been an article looking at the new uniforms for the PWHL that came out today. There wasn’t any preview of the NHL season, even though they just switched manufacturers and there’s probably something worth looking at with that.
Scrolling the front page right now there are 2 articles that aren’t about football uniforms. I dunno I just find I haven’t been reading Uni-Watch every day like I used to. Sorry for complaining
Phil did post a comprehensive article about the NHL’s new Fanatics jerseys, which was essentially a season preview since most teams won’t have alternates for the first Fanatics season:

Thanks for the input Kyle. Yes, UW tends to be more “heavy” on football and baseball coverage, as it was during Paul’s tenure as well. I had actually hoped to do an NHL preview, even enlisting an “expert” to help, but it just didn’t come together in time. I DID cover all the NHL uniforms the day they were introduced. As far as the PWHL, our own Jamie Rathjen will have a big piece on that for tomorrow. I’d hoped he could complete it for today, but it will run as tomorrow’s lede.
I’m basically doing this site all on my own (with the assistance of a few staff), and I simply don’t have the time to post an article on every uniform. Unfortunately, for the past several months, I’ve also been dealing with some family health issues which do require some of my time. Believe me, I’d love to be able to do UW 24/7, but I can’t. I try to get as much uni info out as possible.
Over my years, I’ve covered every sport, and we get more comments/feedback on football and baseball, so those two will get the most coverage. I’ve done many articles on tennis and golf, for example, but those two sports don’t seem to interest most folks. And that’s fine, I’ll still cover those, but there always seems to be the most engagement with baseball/football, and to a much lesser extent with basketball, hockey and soccer.
If you’d ever like to write on a topic of interest to you, I would welcome it! I’m always lookng for readers to submit their ideas for topics to me, and I hope you’ll consider doing so as well :)
Thanks again for the feedback.
More unneeded trash. Clashes with home uniforms
Teams wearing alternate white helmets has become way too played out across NFL and college football, in my opinion. I can at least stomach them if they have a different facemask color like these, but I’m 100% sick of so many teams doing the white helmet/white facemask look (looking at you, Broncos and basically half of college football). The only team that gets a pass on the white/white helmet is the Texas Longhorns since it’s been their look for decades.
The white alternate helmet wave isn’t as irritating to me as the trend of unitard jersey combinations, but it’s not far behind.
Agreed! Wish the Dolphins would go back to an aqua facemask. And orange one might be kind of cool from time to time. Their uniforms have been so bland for quite some time.
I agree this whole white helmets trend is becoming annoying because teams are just doing it just to do it now. I think the league was better off with the old helmet rules because teams are abusing it now.
Unitardnl uniforms are still the worse. I hate seeing uniforms in football being the same from head to toe as it’s very annoying to look at and too much of one color.
Much like the Texans, it seems the Jags are still trying to figure how they should look and who they ‘are’…even though they’ve been around for decades, I still think of them as expansion team (until this season’s changes, I didn’t think that way about Houston).
Hmmm…maybe they did get it right out of the gate after all.
I still think their classic 90s-00s uniforms paired with the 2009 black-with-teal-flake helmets would be their best possible combo. Plain black helmets are fine, but I always really liked those 2009 helmets for their unique look.
100% agreed.
It’s just unnecessary. The Jags black helmet is just about the only thing about the uniform set i do like.
White/White/Black/white is basically full Fulham Jaguars
The Jags whole look is bad. Nothing stands out, no identity. Very fitting for the way that franchise has floundered over the years. Go back to the throwbacks full time and be done with it.
I like the white helmets. They look really good. Wish they’d get a uniform rebrand though and make it mostly teal and gold.
Also, NFL just remove all the silly rules on how many times you can wear alternate stuff and with what. So limiting
Dude.
I would love to see them in a gold helmet, their usual teal jersey, gold pants, and black socks.
Give me what I want. Give me what I want. Give me what I want.
I also want this. Unreasonably badly. Gold helmet, jaguar print on it. No logo, Bengals-style. Make the spotted pattern the main detailing on the jerseys and pants. It would be glorious. Do it, cowards.

GUD says the Jags are wearing white/black/white/white.
I’d like to see metallic gold Jag helmets

WFWS isn’t the best trend in uniforms, but it tends to be better than BFBS, since white rarely looks forced. White is part of most uniforms, while black (think Washington Commanders) can look jarring. Personally I like the Jags in white and would welcome pairing the teal mostly with white rather than black. As a Bears fan, I think I would only like white buckets for Chicago paired with the snarling bear decal.
I was a big fan of the old 3rd jersey program in the NHL.
You have your normal home and away, but the 3rd is a tweaked logo and colour scheme to give a different look.
Throwbacks are so ubiquitous now in the NFL, then have those (throwback Thursday please?)
But the only way I could get behind these alt helmets is to do this. E. G. White Bengals. Icy white Vikings. Even the Baltimore purple. Its a different look, a different vibe, a chance to “white out” or “purple out” the stadium.
But there are just too many unnecessary looks. This white Jags helmet is for…? I don’t know. Its not an alternate look, its just a mess. I love the suggestion of a gold helmet with leopard print and gold pants. That’s the alt look to catch attention. Not this! Similarly, I like what Houston have tried to do with an outside the box concept with helmet with alt logo, jersey and pants – just that they didn’t need 2 of them!
The 2 shell, now 3 shell rule has got out of hand for teams that only play 17 games, and after careful consideration, this Jags effort is a waste of the Earth’s resources.

Terrific Jag helmet resembling the Bengals design.
The day the Jags wear this with all other elements being white, and they will, I’m calling it their “Snow Leopard” look.
I know white helmets are the new fad, most of them are WFWS.
But I genuinely like how this one looks.
I not only dislike the mono look. But, the whole white hose with white pants is getting annoying too. And, why are teams getting to choose to wear either colored hose or white hose? Can they not dress as a team? Oh, I know, it’s all about “being an individual” crap…….
We get another “Spy vs Spy” game in New Orleans this week. Yay!!!!!!!
White/White/Black would be by far the best combo with this helmet. If they’re going to insist on using the black jersey with it, white pants are a must. Any white helmet with a mono uniform looks absolutely terrible (I’m looking at you, Cardinals).
As a stand-alone, the white helmet is fine…I think a teal helmet would have been more versatile for this team and it’s color scheme. Is any of it necessary? Probably not.
Wow the player is hyped!
I guess thats our cue to be hyped too?
Im so thrilled.
White helmet sucks…black helmets are the best choice for them, and the Ravens
Phil, I am genuinely curious why you place such importance on the color of the socks. Of course appreciating a team’s jersey is a subjective opinion, but I feel that you value the hoisery to be way more significant and influence the overall look of the uniform than any other jersey fanatic I’ve seen.
