[Editor’s Note: Today we have a short guest piece by reader Tanner George, who is currently a student at the University of Maryland. Tanner is “fairly confident that UMd is getting ready to unveil a new alternate as they prepare to take on Oregon this Saturday” and he explains why below. Enjoy! — PH]
Is Maryland football revealing a new alternate?
by Tanner George
If you read the tea leaves, it looks like Maryland is setting up to reveal a new alternate uniform this week.
For the second consecutive summer, the football team ran a series of videos to get fans excited about the upcoming season. Last year, the production culminated in an announcement that the team was returning to their throwback uniforms full-time, and in 2024 a new mural at SECU Stadium was unveiled.
But the final episode left an Easter egg that seemingly points to the team revealing a new uniform ahead of their trip out west to take on the Oregon Ducks. In the final closing, head coach Michael Locksley was shown ominously leaving his office as the camera panned to a Terps mini helmet with the sticky note mysteriously displaying the date “11/9”… which is the date they play Oregon.
Nothing’s for certain, obviously, but breaking out a new alternate uni this week makes a ton of sense for Maryland. Saturday night’s contest pits Nike’s top school against Under Armour’s best, and UA will have a lot of motivation to put its best look on display. CEO Kevin Plank, a graduate of Maryland himself, has worked closely with the football team over the years to give them a variety of unique looks, and one-off uniforms have been fairly common. The Terrapins haven’t dropped any additional hints since that mid-summer video, but the “11/9” on top of a helmet must mean… something.
Count me in as intrigued!
Thanks Tanner! It will be interesting to see if your hunch is correct.
Maryland Football tweeted the following graphic on November 4th. It doesn’t indicate that the red helmet/white jersey/white pants is what the team will be wearing in Eugene, but that’s the combo they are showing.

Will they surprise us on Saturday night? We’ll find out!
Why not just make a different alternative uniform for everyone, every game?
There’s no more identity with these teams and they all seem to suffer from variations of altered uniform perception disorder.
That yellow stripe kills me without any yellow at all on the rest of the uniform.
I love the Terp’s sleeve stripes! I wish they could design the pants with the same exact striping.
Maryland seems to be one of the fore-runners of the current “script-as-helmet-logo” trend, but I hope the new helmet isn’t just another one of those. It always seems like they’re holding something back with their designs.
The football helmet is such a uniquely great surface for a cool graphic logo, it just feels like a wasted opportunity when teams resort to a script wordmark.
Perhaps they’ll have the “angry terrapin” as the helmet logo?
That was my thought as well — since the post-it note is “covering” what’s on the helmet, maybe they’re simply going to reveal a new decal.
Will be the Terp mascot as a helmet decal is my guess as well. Consistent striping is a thing of the past, unfortunately.
I love their current Terps helmet. It reminds me of the days of Boomer Esiason and Neil O’Donnell.
I would do anything for Maryland to bring back the flag unis
Maryland should worry a lot more about the product on the field right now.
Check the Twitter page. The terps just rolled out a white uniform with metallic rose gold accents.
